Italy in spring means March, April and May, and each month suits a different kind of trip. March is cool and quiet, April is green but shaped by Easter, and May is warm and busier. So this page helps you choose the month, the region and the right week for spring 2027.

The short answer: Choose May for reliable warmth, with highs of about 22 to 24 °C (72 to 76 °F). April works well for cities and the countryside, while March is the calmest and cheapest choice. In 2027, however, Easter falls early, on March 28. As a result, the Easter crowds land in late March, and April becomes a quieter post-Easter month. Go south early in the season, and save the lakes and coast for May.

Italy in spring at a glance

First, here is how the three spring months compare. The temperatures are rounded 1991–2020 averages for Rome, and the dates refer to 2027.

In fact, spring crowds are measurable, and they build fast. According to ISTAT’s second-quarter 2025 tourism report, Italy counted about 29.8 million nights in April 2025 (checked September 2026). May then reached 38.8 million, and June jumped to 59 million. Foreign visitors, above all, made up 62.1% of nights in May. So spring is busy, but still far from summer. March, April or May: which month of Italy in spring fits you?

In short, start from your priorities. Then open the month page for events and dates.

Choose March if

  • Above all, you want the lowest crowds and do not mind cool evenings.
  • Also, you plan to focus on museums, churches and food, not beaches.
  • You can travel before Holy Week, which in 2027 starts on Palm Sunday, March 21.

Choose April if

  • You want mild days for cities, plus green hills in Tuscany and Umbria.
  • In addition, you prefer a post-Easter month, which April is in 2027.
  • However, you can avoid Verona and Milan during their big April trade fairs.

Choose May if

  • Warmth matters most, since highs average 22 to 24 °C (72 to 76 °F).
  • You want lakes, the coast and boat trips, because most seasonal services are running.
  • Finally, you can book early, since late May already feels like the start of summer.

If your dates can slide later, our guide to Italy in summer compares June with the hotter months.

Easter and Italy in spring: the timing rule

Easter moves every year, and it shapes Italy in spring more than any other date. As a rule, Western Easter falls on the first Sunday after the first full moon of spring. So it can land anywhere from March 22 to April 25. In 2027, Easter is on March 28, according to timeanddate’s Italian holiday calendar (checked September 2026). In 2028, by contrast, it moves to April 16.

What an early Easter does in 2027

  • Crowds move to late March. Holy Week, from March 21 to 28, brings pilgrims to Rome and school groups across Europe.
  • Easter Monday is a holiday. The Italian government’s holiday list includes Easter Monday, April 25 and May 1 (checked September 2026). As a result, offices and many shops close.
  • Clocks change on Easter Sunday. Summer time starts on the last Sunday of March, which is March 28, 2027.
  • Some free days disappear. The Vatican Museums open free on the last Sunday of the month (checked September 2026). However, Easter Sunday is an exception, so March 28, 2027 is not a free day there.

Meanwhile, longer days help. The Colosseum moves to its 8:30 a.m. to 7:15 p.m. schedule from the last Sunday in March (checked September 2026). For processions and papal events, read our guide to Easter in Italy. In Rome during Holy Week, a Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel tour with timed entry saves queuing.

Spring weather in Italy by region

The table uses 1991–2020 climate normals from NOAA’s WMO normals and Italian weather-service data (checked September 2026). Each cell shows the average high first, then the low. However, spring weather swings from week to week, so pack layers and a light rain jacket.

StationMarchAprilMay
Milan (Linate)16 / 4 °C (60 / 40 °F)19 / 8 °C (67 / 47 °F)24 / 13 °C (75 / 55 °F)
Florence (Peretola)16 / 5 °C (61 / 41 °F)20 / 8 °C (68 / 47 °F)24 / 12 °C (76 / 53 °F)
Rome (Ciampino)16 / 6 °C (60 / 43 °F)19 / 9 °C (66 / 48 °F)22 / 13 °C (72 / 55 °F)
Palermo (Boccadifalco)17 / 10 °C (62 / 50 °F)20 / 12 °C (68 / 54 °F)24 / 16 °C (75 / 60 °F)

First, daytime highs are similar across the country in March and April. The south, however, has much milder nights. Second, rain moves north as the season goes on. For example, Palermo drops from about 8 rainy days in March to about 4 in May, while Milan rises from about 5 to 8.

Where to go in Italy in spring

Instead of asking where is best, match the region to the month. This table sorts the main types of destination.

The south: early spring warmth

In March, Sicily is the mildest part of the country, so its archaeological sites are pleasant before the heat. Early spring is also almond blossom season there. For a guided visit, see a Valley of the Temples tour in Agrigento. In short, Italy in spring starts in the south.

Art cities in spring

Rome, Florence and Venice are at their most walkable in April and May. Still, spring is school-trip season, so book the big museums ahead. In Venice, the access fee applied on 60 selected days in 2026. According to the City of Venice, they ran from April 3 to July 26 (checked September 2026). However, no 2027 calendar has been published yet. Our Venice access fee guide explains how it works.

Tuscany in spring

April and May are prime months for the Tuscan countryside, with green vineyards and wildflowers along the roads. For example, a Chianti wine tour from Florence fits easily into a city stay. Then use our Tuscany itinerary to plan more days. For gardens, read our picks of gardens in Florence and historic Italian gardens.

The coast: wait for late spring

Coastal boats are seasonal, so spring is when they restart. For instance, the Cinque Terre boat timetable for March 28 to April 19, 2026 served four of the five villages (checked September 2026). It also warns that the service is seasonal. As a result, May is the easiest spring month on the coast. Meanwhile, a Cinque Terre boat tour or a Cinque Terre day trip from Florence keeps it simple. Further south, our guide to Amalfi Coast ferries explains the routes. Similarly, an Amalfi Coast boat tour avoids the narrow coast road.

Lakes and mountains

The lakes wake up in April. For example, the 2026 Lake Garda spring timetable ran from April 1 to May 15, according to Navigazione Laghi (checked September 2026). Then the fuller summer schedule began. So compare the lakes in our guide to lakes in Italy. Then, on Lake Como, a Lake Como boat tour shows the villas from the water. Similarly, on Lake Garda, a Lake Garda day trip to Sirmione suits a base in Verona. In the Dolomites, by contrast, spring is a gap between seasons. For example, Dolomiti Superski started its 2026 summer lift season on May 14 (checked September 2026).

Spring holidays and free museum days in 2027

Three national holidays fall in spring. In 2027, however, two land on a weekend, and Italian holidays are not moved. As a result, there are no long bridge weekends.

  • Easter Monday, March 29. Also called Pasquetta, it is a day for countryside picnics.
  • April 25, Liberation Day. It is also the feast of St. Mark, Venice’s patron saint. In 2026, state museums opened free that day, according to the Ministry of Culture (checked September 2026). The ministry decides this year by year, so check before you go.
  • May 1, Labor Day. In 2026, state museums opened with usual prices and hours. The Vatican Museums, however, list May 1 among their closing days.

In addition, state museums are free on the first Sunday of each month. In 2027, that means March 7, April 4 and May 2. Our guide to free museum days in Italy explains the booking rules.

Shoulder-season prices in spring: how they work

Spring is shoulder season, but prices jump around specific dates instead of following one curve. So use this structure to find cheaper weeks:

  • March outside Holy Week is usually the lowest-priced part of the season.
  • Easter week pushes up hotel rates, above all in Rome and Florence.
  • Trade fairs fill whole cities. In 2027, Vinitaly runs in Verona from April 11 to 14 (checked September 2026). Also, the Salone del Mobile runs in Milan from April 13 to 18.
  • Midweek nights are usually cheaper than weekends, while lake hotels fill up on Saturdays.
  • Late May, finally, starts to price like early summer on the coast.

In short, the cheapest version of Italy in spring is a March or midweek April trip that avoids Easter and the fairs.
