Italy in April is spring at full speed: long days, green hills, wisteria on old walls and outdoor tables back in the piazza, the town square. In 2027 the month also has an unusual shape, because Easter falls in March. As a result, April 2027 starts after the Easter rush and fills up again mid-month with trade fairs and national holidays.

The short answer: April is one of the most pleasant months to visit Italy. Afternoons are mild from Milan to Palermo, although showers are common and evenings stay cool. In 2027, Easter is on March 28, so early April is calmer than in most years. However, mid-April brings Vinitaly in Verona and Milan Design Week, while April 21 and April 25 add events in Rome and a national holiday. Book popular museums and northern hotels early.

Easter 2027 falls in March, not April

Easter Sunday is March 28, 2027, and Easter Monday, called Pasquetta, is March 29. In other words, Holy Week and its crowds are over before April begins. In many years, by contrast, Easter lands in April; in 2026, for example, it fell on April 5.

So the first ten days of April 2027 are a sweet spot. The weather keeps improving, and rates in Rome and Florence tend to ease after the holiday. If you want processions and Holy Week rites instead, read our guide to Easter in Italy and plan for late March. Our guide to Italy in March covers the weeks before.

Italy in April: weather by region

April is clearly warmer than March, yet it is not settled. Sunny mornings can turn into showers, and a light jacket is still useful at night. The figures below are 1991–2020 climate normals for four airport stations, based on NOAA’s WMO climate normals and Italian weather-service data (checked September 2026). They are rounded averages, not a forecast.

CityAverage highAverage lowDays with rain
Milan (Linate)19 °C (67 °F)8 °C (47 °F)About 7
Florence (Peretola)20 °C (68 °F)8 °C (47 °F)About 9
Rome (Ciampino)19 °C (66 °F)9 °C (48 °F)About 7
Palermo (Boccadifalco)20 °C (68 °F)12 °C (54 °F)About 6

In fact, afternoon highs are almost the same from north to south. The real difference is at night: Milan, Florence and Rome cool down to the 40s °F, while Palermo stays noticeably milder. Meanwhile, snow still lingers at altitude in the Alps.

Liberation Day on April 25

April 25, the Festa della Liberazione, marks the liberation of Italy in 1945 and is a national holiday. Towns hold ceremonies and parades. Offices and many shops close, although restaurants and cafés in tourist areas usually stay open. Trains run, but they can be busy.

In recent years, state museums have also opened for free on this day. For 2026, the Ministry of Culture museum portal announced that state museums and archaeological parks were free on April 25, with booking where required (checked September 2026). The ministry decides this year by year, so check before you plan around it. In 2027, April 25 falls on a Sunday. As a result, there is no long weekend, and May 1 lands on a Saturday too.

April 25 is also the feast of St. Mark, Venice’s patron saint. By tradition, Venetian men give a single red rosebud, the bòcolo, to the women in their lives.

Natale di Roma on April 21

According to legend, Romulus founded Rome on April 21, 753 BC, so the city celebrates its birthday, the Natale di Roma, every year on that date. In 2027 it will be Rome’s 2,780th birthday, and April 21 falls on a Wednesday.

The highlight is a historical re-enactment by the Gruppo Storico Romano. For the 2026 edition, Turismo Roma listed events from April 18 to 21 at the Circus Maximus and other sites, including a costumed parade, with all events free (checked September 2026). The 2027 program was not yet published when we checked. Expect the re-enactments to cluster around the nearest weekend, and confirm the dates closer to your trip.

Museums and free days in April 2027

Several free-entry rules overlap in April 2027:

  • April 4: the Domenica al museo program makes state museums and archaeological parks free on the first Sunday of each month, with booking where required (checked September 2026). In April 2027 that should be April 4.
  • April 25: possible free entry at state museums for Liberation Day, if the ministry repeats the 2026 decision.
  • April 25 at the Vatican: the museums close on Sundays except the last Sunday of the month, when entry is free from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The official Vatican Museums page excludes that free Sunday only when it coincides with Easter or a few other feast days (checked September 2026). April 25, 2027 is not on that list, so it should be a free Vatican Sunday.

The Vatican also closes on Easter Monday, which in 2027 falls in March. Free days bring long lines, so a timed ticket on a weekday is often the better choice. Our guide to Vatican Museums tickets compares the options, and our guide to free museum days in Italy lists the rules site by site.

Opening hours are longer now, too. The Colosseum archaeological park opens from 8:30 a.m. to 7:15 p.m. from the last Sunday of March to August 31, with last entry at 6:15 p.m. (checked September 2026).

Vinitaly and Milan Design Week in April 2027

Two major fairs fall in the same week in the north. First, the official Vinitaly site lists April 11 to 14, 2027, for its 59th edition in Verona (checked September 2026). Vinitaly is an international wine and spirits exhibition aimed mainly at the trade. Consequently, Verona and nearby towns get very busy that week. If you are not attending, visit Verona before or after the fair. Our guide to Verona tours helps you plan, and a Verona walking tour works well on a quieter day.

Second, the Salone del Mobile.Milano lists April 13 to 18, 2027, at the Fiera Milano fairgrounds in Rho (checked September 2026). It drives Milan Design Week, when events spread across the city and hotels get scarce. In short, avoid April 11 to 18 for a budget trip to Milan or Verona, or book very early if you want to be there.

Boats and lakes restart for spring

April is when coastal and lake boats move to spring schedules. On the Cinque Terre, for example, the Cinque Terre tourist consortium published a Line 02 timetable for March 28 to April 19, 2026, linking La Spezia, Porto Venere and four of the five villages (checked September 2026). The service is seasonal and depends on the sea. A Cinque Terre boat tour is another option once the season opens.

On Lake Garda, similarly, Navigazione Laghi ran a spring timetable from April 1 to May 15, 2026 (checked September 2026). The 2027 timetables were not yet out when we checked, so treat these as a guide to the pattern. On the Amalfi Coast, meanwhile, ferries run more often as the season builds. Our guide to Amalfi Coast ferries explains the routes.

Where to go in Italy in April

Rome and Florence

Early April 2027 is ideal for the art cities, since the Easter crowds have gone. Spring also brings Roman artichokes and fresh fava beans to menus.

The lakes and the Veneto

The lakes wake up in April, and gardens start to bloom. Verona and the Valpolicella hills are lovely outside Vinitaly week. For getting around by rail, our guide to trains in Italy explains tickets and regional lines.

The south and Sicily

Sicily and the Amalfi Coast offer the mildest nights. However, the sea is still cool for swimming, and some beach businesses only open later in spring.

Crowds, prices and what to pack

April is shoulder season, but it is not quiet everywhere. Early April 2027 should be calmer, while April 11 to 18 is tight in Milan and Verona and Rome gets busy around April 21 and 25. Rates change daily, so compare prices for your exact dates.

For packing, plan for sun, showers and cool evenings:

  • A light waterproof jacket or a compact umbrella.
  • A sweater or light fleece for evenings, above all in the north.
  • Comfortable walking shoes that handle wet cobblestones.
  • Sunglasses and sunscreen, since the spring sun is strong in the south.
  • A scarf or layer that covers shoulders for churches and the Vatican.
