Italy in May sits between spring and summer: warm afternoons, long evenings and gardens in full bloom. Also, the sea starts to tempt swimmers in the south, while the Alps still hold snow up high. So this guide covers May 2027 week by week: weather, holidays, events and crowds.

The short answer: May is one of the easiest months to visit Italy, because it is warm but rarely hot. Average highs reach about 22 to 24 °C (72 to 76 °F), and rain is lighter than in April. In 2027, May 1 falls on a Saturday, so there is no long weekend. However, Rome hosts the Italian Open until May 16, and the Venice Architecture Biennale opens on May 8. Late May gets busier and pricier, so book early for the coast.

In short, early May is calm, mid-May has the big events, and late May slides toward summer. If you are still choosing a month, our guide to the best time to visit Italy compares the whole year. Also, for the month before, see Italy in April.

Italy in May: weather by region

May is clearly warmer and drier than April. In fact, it often feels like early summer by the last week. The figures below are 1991–2020 normals for four airport stations. They come from NOAA’s WMO climate normals and Italian weather-service data (checked September 2026). However, they are rounded averages, not a forecast.

CityAverage highAverage lowDays with rain
Milan (Linate)24 °C (75 °F)13 °C (55 °F)About 8
Florence (Peretola)24 °C (76 °F)12 °C (53 °F)About 8
Rome (Ciampino)22 °C (72 °F)13 °C (55 °F)About 6
Palermo (Boccadifalco)24 °C (75 °F)16 °C (60 °F)About 4

North versus south

Afternoons are surprisingly similar from Milan to Palermo. Instead, the difference shows at night and in the rain. Milan and Florence still see about eight rainy days, often short thunderstorms. Palermo, by contrast, averages about four, and its nights stay near 60 °F.

Mountains and the sea

Meanwhile, the high Alps and Dolomites are between seasons. Snow often lingers on upper trails, so many mountain huts open only in summer. At sea level, however, the water warms slowly. So the south suits a swim by late May, while the north is better for walking.

Holidays: May 1 and the June 2 lead-in

Italy has two national holidays around the month. The State Ceremonial Department lists both among the holidays set by law (checked September 2026). The first is May 1, Festa del Lavoro (Labor Day). The second, just after the month ends, is June 2, Festa della Repubblica (Republic Day).

May 1, 2027 is a Saturday

On May 1, offices and many shops close, although cafés and restaurants in tourist areas usually open. Trains run, but they can be busy. In 2027, however, the holiday falls on a Saturday. As a result, Italians do not get a long weekend, and domestic travel peaks less than usual.

Still, watch one closure. The official Vatican Museums page lists May 1 among its closing days (checked September 2026). By contrast, the Colosseum archaeological park lists only January 1 and December 25 as closures. Also, its summer hours run from 8:30 in the morning to 7:15 in the evening, with last entry at 6:15 (checked September 2026).

June 2: Republic Day in Rome

June 2 marks the 1946 referendum that made Italy a republic. For the 2026 edition, Turismo Roma described a parade along Via dei Fori Imperiali (checked September 2026). Then the Frecce Tricolori aerobatic team flew over the city. In 2027, June 2 falls on a Wednesday. So if your trip in late May runs into June, expect road closures near the Colosseum that morning.

Religious dates in May 2027

Because Easter 2027 falls on March 28, the movable feasts come early this year. For example, Ascension Day is Thursday, May 6, and Pentecost is Sunday, May 16. Neither is a public holiday in Italy, so shops and museums keep normal hours. Then Corpus Domini follows on Thursday, May 27, although Italy celebrates it on Sunday, May 30.

That last weekend matters in Umbria, because towns such as Spello traditionally lay flower-petal carpets for Corpus Domini. However, the 2027 program was not published when checked, so confirm it before you plan around it. For the region itself, see our Umbria travel guide.

Events in Italy in May 2027

Only a few May events had official 2027 dates when checked. So here they are first, followed by recurring ones still waiting for 2027 dates. Also, our events in Italy hub adds more as organizers publish them.

Italian Open tennis in Rome

The Internazionali BNL d’Italia is one of the biggest clay-court tournaments of the season. According to Turismo Roma, the 2027 edition runs from April 27 to May 16 (checked September 2026). The venue, as always, is the Foro Italico. In addition, our guide to the Italian Open in Rome covers tickets and getting there.

Venice Architecture Biennale

In Venice, the official Biennale site lists the 20th International Architecture Exhibition from May 8 to November 21, 2027 (checked September 2026). Before that, May 6 and 7 are pre-opening days for press and professionals. As a result, Venice hotels book up early that week.

What about the Venice access fee? According to the official access-fee site, the 2026 trial period ended in late July (checked September 2026). Rules for later years are up to the city, and no 2027 calendar was published. Meanwhile, our guide to the Venice access fee will follow any decision.

Festa dei Ceri in Gubbio

In Umbria, the official Italia.it page says Gubbio holds the Festa dei Ceri every May 15 (checked September 2026). Then teams race three tall wooden “candles” up to the basilica on Monte Ingino. In 2027, May 15 is a Saturday, so expect big crowds.

Recurring events without 2027 dates yet

  • Cantine Aperte. The Movimento Turismo del Vino holds its open-cellar weekend at the end of May (checked September 2026). In 2026, for example, it ran May 30 and 31.
  • Vogalonga. The official Vogalonga site listed its 50th edition for May 24, 2026 (checked September 2026). It is a non-competitive rowing event of about 30 kilometers. However, the 2027 date was not announced.
  • Giro d’Italia. Italy’s great cycling race traditionally runs through May. However, the 2027 route was not published when checked.

Museums and free days in May 2027

Two free-entry rules fall inside the month. First, the Domenica al museo program opens state museums for free on the first Sunday of each month (checked September 2026). Booking applies where required. So in May 2027, the free day should be Sunday, May 2.

Second, the Vatican Museums open free on the last Sunday of the month, in the morning only. Also, the official page excludes that Sunday only on Easter and a few other feasts. So May 30, 2027 should qualify. Free days bring long lines, however, so a timed weekday ticket is often the better choice. Our guides to Vatican Museums tickets and free museum days in Italy explain the options site by site.

Where to go in Italy in May

May suits almost every region. Still, some places are at their best now, before summer heat and crowds arrive.

The Amalfi Coast and Capri

Boats run far more often than in April, while the lemon terraces are green. As a result, May balances open services and pre-summer prices. First, our guide to Amalfi Coast ferries explains the routes. Then, on the water, compare an Amalfi Coast boat tour or a Capri boat tour with the Blue Grotto.

The Cinque Terre

Hiking weather is ideal in May, since it is warm but rarely hot. However, trail status changes with rain and repairs. Check our guide to Cinque Terre hiking first. Also, on a calm day, a Cinque Terre boat tour shows the villages from the sea.

The lakes

On Lake Garda, the season shifts gear mid-month. For 2026, Navigazione Laghi switched to its summer timetable on May 16 (checked September 2026). The 2027 timetables were not yet out, so treat this as the usual pattern. For a day on the lake, see a Lake Garda day trip to Sirmione. Also, our guide to Lake Garda tours compares more options.

Rome, Florence and Tuscany

The art cities are busy in May but still comfortable. In Rome, book the Colosseum early, above all during tennis weeks; our Colosseum tickets guide explains the options. Also, a Colosseum tour with the arena floor adds context. In Tuscany, meanwhile, the vineyards are in fresh leaf. So a Chianti wine tour from Florence fits a warm afternoon.

Sicily and Puglia

Finally, the far south is at its most pleasant, with warm days and few rainy ones. For example, Palermo’s markets suit a Palermo street food tour. In Puglia, similarly, consider an Alberobello and Matera day trip from Bari.

Crowds and prices in Italy in May

In short, May is shoulder season turning into high season. Early May 2027 should be relatively calm, since May 1 falls on a Saturday. Then mid-May brings the tennis in Rome and the Biennale opening in Venice. Finally, the last two weeks fill with European travelers ahead of summer.

Rates change daily, so compare prices for your exact dates rather than trusting averages. In practice, book coastal hotels and ferries-dependent stays first, then the major museums. Also, most Italian cities add a nightly tourist tax at check-in.

What to pack for Italy in May

Pack, then, for warm days, cooler evenings and the odd storm:

  • Light layers and a sweater for evenings, above all in the north.
  • Also, a compact umbrella or thin rain jacket for short showers.
  • Comfortable walking shoes for cobblestones and trails.
  • Sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat, since the sun is strong by late May.
  • A scarf or top that covers shoulders for churches and the Vatican.
  • Finally, a swimsuit if you head south in the second half of the month.
