An Alberobello and Matera day trip from Bari covers the trulli and the cave city in one day. For the wider trulli country, see our Valle d’Itria travel guide. Two very different bookings cover it — about $76 and about $232 — and the most useful thing to understand before choosing is what neither of them includes.

The verdict
Start here, because it reframes both listings: neither of these is a guided tour. The $76 option is explicitly self-guided, with support delivered digitally to your phone. The $232 option lists “Guided Tours” among its exclusions and offers “Basic Information” among its inclusions. What you are buying in both cases is transport between places that are genuinely awkward to reach without a car.
That is not a criticism. Alberobello is 55 kilometers from Bari and Matera is in a different region altogether, across the border in Basilicata. Getting to both in a day without driving is the problem these products solve, and they solve it.
The $76 minibus gives you a seat, Wi-Fi on board and a digital guide, with transfers from Bari or Polignano. It is rated 4.2 across 25 reviews — the weakest score anywhere in our Italian coverage, with three one-star ratings in a sample that small. The nine hours include all the driving, which the provider states openly rather than burying.
The $232 option rates 4.8 across 37 reviews with a Badge of Excellence, adds Polignano a Mare to the route, includes pickup and drop-off at your accommodation, and accepts bookings from a single traveler — which tells you it is a car rather than a coach. Reviewers describe the driver as a local who shares real knowledge of the area, even though formal guided tours are not part of the package.
Which Alberobello and Matera day trip to book
So about $156 more per person buys a better-rated operator, a third town, collection from your door, and someone in the front seat who can tell you what you are looking at. For two people that is a $312 difference, which is real money in Puglia. Our view: if you have no car and this is your one day, pay it. If you are counting every euro and are comfortable reading about Matera on a screen, the cheap one still gets you there.
Neither price includes lunch. On the $232 option, guided tours are excluded and so is the Castel del Monte entrance ticket — priced by the provider at €10.00 full, or €2.00 reduced for EU citizens aged 18 to 25. On the $76 option there is no guide at any point; the support is an app. Budget for lunch in Matera and for any site you actually intend to enter.
Which one is for you?
Take the $76 minibus if
- Budget is the deciding factor and you mainly need the transport.
- You are happy reading about what you are seeing on your own phone.
- You are staying in Polignano a Mare, which it collects from as well as Bari.
- You want Alberobello and Matera and do not need a third stop.
- You are traveling with children: the operator discounts kids’ rates.
Take the $232 car if
- You want the better-rated operator. 4.8 against 4.2 is a meaningful gap.
- You want Polignano a Mare as well, which is the prettiest of the three.
- You want collecting from your accommodation rather than finding a meeting point.
- You are traveling alone. The minimum is one participant.
- You want a driver who will actually talk to you about the region.
What each one covers
The minibus, about $76
Included: an air-conditioned vehicle, transfers from Bari or Polignano to Alberobello and Matera, digital support for the visit, and free Wi-Fi on board. Not included: lunch. The provider notes explicitly that the transportation time is counted inside the nine-hour total, which is honest and worth reading as a warning about how much of the day is spent moving.
The car, about $232
Included: an air-conditioned vehicle, pick up and drop off, and what the provider calls basic information. Not included: lunch, guided tours, and the Castel del Monte entrance ticket at €10.00 full or €2.00 reduced for EU citizens aged 18 to 25. Supplied by Edson Barents, with a minimum of one participant.
Before you go
- Neither is wheelchair accessible. Both are listed as stroller accessible, and the $232 option requires infants to sit on laps.
- Matera is steep and uneven. The Sassi (the cave districts) are stone staircases cut into a ravine — the reason the accessibility note matters more here than on a normal day trip.
- Eat in Matera, not Alberobello. Neither tour includes lunch, and Matera has the better of it.
- Expect four or more hours in a vehicle. Bari to Alberobello to Matera and back is the shape of the day, whichever you book.
- Cancellation. Both offer free cancellation up to 24 hours before the start, local time, with confirmation at booking.

Read the review counts with care: 25 and 37 are both small samples, so neither rating is settled. What is visible is the shape rather than the average — three one-star reviews out of twenty-five on one, none at all out of thirty-seven on the other.
What travelers say
Enzo was an excellent guide. As a local, he shared a wealth of knowledge about the area’s history and culture, which made the experience even more meaningful. He was very friendly, approachable, and made the tour enjoyable from start to finish.
Kanti_R, December 2025, via Viator, on the $232 car
That review is worth holding against the listing, because it describes something the booking page does not promise. This product formally excludes guided tours, and yet travelers consistently describe the driver as a guide in everything but contract. That gap works in your favour here — but it is goodwill rather than an entitlement, so do not book on the assumption that commentary is guaranteed.
How it fits a Puglia trip
This is the day that justifies basing yourself in Bari rather than passing through it. For the city itself, see our guide to things to do in Bari. Pair it with an evening in the old town: the Bari street food tour runs three hours, costs about $57 and holds a perfect 5.0 across nearly 1,500 reviews, which makes it the single strongest recommendation we have in the south. Everything else is in the experiences and tours hub.
Staying in Matera? Compare the Matera Sassi walking tours: a two-hour guided walk with a cave-house visit, from the city itself.
Questions travelers ask
Is there a guide on either tour?
Not formally. The $76 option is self-guided with digital support on your phone. The $232 option lists guided tours among its exclusions and offers basic information instead, though reviewers describe the local driver sharing a great deal about the region.
Is lunch included?
No, on either. Budget for a meal, and take it in Matera if you can — you will be there over the middle of the day and it is the better place to eat of the towns on the route.
How much of the nine hours is driving?
A substantial share. The provider of the $76 tour states plainly that transportation time is included in the nine-hour total. Bari to Alberobello to Matera and back is roughly 200 kilometers of road, so plan on several hours seated.
Which one visits Polignano a Mare?
Only the $232 car tour includes Polignano as a stop. The $76 minibus offers Polignano as a pickup point rather than a destination, which is an easy thing to misread on the booking page.
Do I have to pay to enter anything?
On the $232 tour, the Castel del Monte entrance ticket is excluded and priced by the provider at €10.00 full or €2.00 reduced for EU citizens aged 18 to 25. Walking the streets of Alberobello and the Sassi of Matera costs nothing; entering specific cave dwellings or churches usually does.
Can I book for one person?
Yes on the $232 car tour, which states a minimum of one participant. The $76 minibus does not state a minimum, so ask the operator if you are traveling alone.
Are they suitable for limited mobility?
Neither is wheelchair accessible, although both are stroller accessible. Matera in particular is built into a ravine and navigated by stone staircases, so it is demanding regardless of which transport you book.
Go, and go knowing you are buying a ride rather than a guide. Matera is one of the oldest continuously inhabited places on earth and Alberobello looks like nowhere else in Italy; both deserve a day, and neither is easy to reach from Bari without a car. Read about them the night before, and spend the difference between the two options on whether you want a third town and a door-to-door pickup.
