Italy in February: Weather, Carnival 2027, Ski Season and Where to Go (2027)
Italy in February: weather by region, official Carnival 2027 dates for Venice and Viareggio, Valentine’s Day in Terni, ski season, closures and where to go.

Italy in February is a month of two halves. Carnival fills the first part with masks, parades and fried sweets, and then Lent brings one of the quietest spells of the year. This guide covers weather, Carnival 2027, Valentine’s Day, skiing, closures and where to go.
The short answer: February is still winter, cold in the north and mild in Sicily. In 2027 Carnival ends early: Venice runs from January 23 to February 9, and Shrove Tuesday falls on February 9. After that, the art cities are calm, although Viareggio parades until February 20 and Sanremo’s song festival runs February 16 to 20. Meanwhile, the Alps are at their snowiest and busiest. Choose the first half for festivals and the second half for quiet museums.

Is February right for your trip?
Match your goal to a place, then read the trade-off.
| If you want… | Go to | Best dates in 2027 | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Masks and costumes | Venice | February 1 to 9 | Peak crowds on the final days |
| Giant parade floats | Viareggio, Tuscany | Parade days, February 4 to 20 | Ticketed, weather-dependent |
| A historic orange battle | Ivrea, Piedmont | The last days of Carnival | Messy, crowded, check the program |
| Museums with short lines | Rome, Florence, Milan | February 10 to 28, weekdays | Cool, often gray days |
| Skiing | The Dolomites and the Alps | Any week, snow permitting | School-holiday weeks are busy |
| Almond blossom and mild air | Agrigento, Sicily | Mid to late February | The festival itself is in March |
On the other hand, Italy in February is a poor fit for beaches, island hopping or boat trips. Many coastal hotels stay closed, and ferry timetables are reduced.
Italy in February: weather by region
February is only slightly milder than January. The table uses 1991–2020 climate normals from NOAA’s WMO climate normals and Italian weather-service data for four airport stations (checked September 2026). These are rounded averages, not forecasts.
| City | Average high | Average low | Days with rain |
|---|---|---|---|
| Milan (Linate) | 10 °C (50 °F) | 1 °C (33 °F) | About 5 |
| Florence (Peretola) | 13 °C (55 °F) | 3 °C (37 °F) | About 7 |
| Rome (Ciampino) | 13 °C (55 °F) | 3 °C (38 °F) | About 7 |
| Palermo (Boccadifalco) | 15 °C (59 °F) | 9 °C (48 °F) | About 9 |
In other words, Milan still sits just above freezing at night, while Florence and Rome feel crisp by day and cold after dark. Palermo, by contrast, is mild enough for lunch outdoors on a sunny day.
Venice needs one extra thought. High tides, called acqua alta, can still occur in late winter. The MOSE flood barriers now hold back the highest peaks, yet the lowest spots, such as St. Mark’s Square, may still flood. Pack shoes you do not mind getting wet.
Carnival season in 2027
Carnevale, the season of feasting before Lent, is the big event of Italy in February. Its dates move with Easter each year. In 2027 Easter falls on March 28, so Shrove Tuesday is February 9 and Ash Wednesday is February 10. As a result, most celebrations end in the first half of February.
Venice
The Venice Carnival runs from January 23 to February 9, 2027, according to the official Carnival site (checked September 2026). The final weekend and the last few days are usually the busiest. For this reason, arrive midweek if you can, and book a room early. Our Venice Carnival guide covers events, masks and practical tips. Also check our guide to the Venice access fee before you pick a day trip date.
Viareggio
Viareggio, on the Tuscan coast, is famous for enormous papier-mâché floats that satirize politics and celebrities. The official Viareggio Carnival site lists six parades for 2027 (checked September 2026). They start on Saturday, January 30, and continue on February 4, 7, 9 and 14. Then, the closing parade with fireworks takes place on Saturday, February 20. The parades are ticketed, so check the details on the official site.
Ivrea
Ivrea, near Turin, hosts the Battle of the Oranges. Teams on foot pelt horse-drawn carts with oranges in the final days of Carnival, according to the Storico Carnevale di Ivrea (checked September 2026). The detailed 2027 program had not been published when we checked. Expect a messy, crowded day, and check the official site for the schedule.
Across Italy, look out for chiacchiere, thin strips of fried dough dusted with sugar, and castagnole, small fried dough balls. See our guide to Italian pastries.
Valentine’s Day and other February feasts
Valentine’s Day has an Italian home. Saint Valentine was a bishop of Terni, in Umbria, and his remains rest in the basilica that bears his name there. Consequently, February 14 is the city’s patron saint day, and Terni usually holds events around it during the month. In 2027, Valentine’s Day falls on a Sunday. Our Umbria travel guide helps you plan a visit, and our list of romantic destinations in Italy offers more ideas.
In Sicily, Catania honors its patron, Saint Agatha, with a huge religious festival, traditionally from February 3 to 5. Similarly, almond trees bloom across the Valley of the Temples in Agrigento from late winter. However, the Almond Blossom Festival, the Mandorlo in Fiore, now takes place in March. The City of Agrigento listed March 7 to 15 for the 2026 edition (checked September 2026). Local press reports early March again for 2027, but confirm with the city before you plan around it. A Valley of the Temples tour works well in February either way.
Music fans can follow the Sanremo Festival, Italy’s most-watched song contest, on the Riviera. Rai’s official rules set the 2027 edition for February 16 to 20 at the Ariston Theater, as reported by the AGI news agency (checked September 2026).
Ski season and school holidays
For skiers, Italy in February means peak season in the Dolomites and the rest of the Alps. The snow base is usually at its deepest, and the days are longer than in December. However, school winter breaks in Italy and neighboring countries often fall in February, especially around Carnival. As a result, some weeks are much busier on the slopes and pricier in resort hotels. Check your resort’s calendar and book early for those weeks. Our guide to skiing in Italy compares the main areas.
Not a skier? You can still see the peaks in snow. Our guide to Dolomites tours compares the options, and a Dolomites day trip from Venice pairs well with a Carnival stay.
Museum hours and closures in February
Hours shift mid-month. The Colosseum archaeological park opens from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. until February 15, with last entry at 3:30 p.m. (checked September 2026). From February 16 it stays open until 5 p.m., with last entry at 4 p.m. Our guide to Colosseum tickets explains the ticket types.
The Vatican Museums’ official calendar lists February 11 as a closing day, the anniversary of the Lateran Treaty (checked September 2026). The museums also close on Sundays, except the last Sunday of the month, when entry is free. In 2027 that should be February 28. Read our guide to Vatican Museums tickets before you choose a date.
In addition, the Domenica al museo program makes state museums free on the first Sunday of each month (checked September 2026). In 2027 that should be February 7, which is also Carnival Sunday, so expect crowds and book where reservations apply.
Where to go in Italy in February
Rome
Rome is a strong choice after Carnival. Lines are short and sunny days are common. Book a Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel tour or a Colosseum tour with the arena floor for a weekday. Our best tours in Rome list helps first-time visitors choose.
Venice and the Veneto
Venice is the obvious pick for the first nine days of February. Afterward, the city turns quiet and misty. A Vivaldi and opera concert in Venice suits a cold evening, and a hidden Venice walking tour shows the lanes without crowds.
Florence and Tuscany
Florence is cool and uncrowded, so museum days are easy. Then add a Viareggio parade as a day trip. On a rainy afternoon, a cooking class in Florence is a warm plan.
Sicily
Sicily is the mildest region, with almond blossom and green hills. See our guide to things to do in Sicily for ideas. A Mount Etna tour from Catania may show the volcano capped with snow.
Low season: pros, cons and what to pack
After Carnival, Italy in February is low season in the cities. Hotel rates in the art cities are often lower than in spring, and sights feel calm. By contrast, Venice during Carnival, ski resorts and Valentine’s weekend can cost more. Rates change daily, so compare prices for your own dates.
For packing, bring layers rather than one bulky coat:
- A warm, waterproof jacket and a compact umbrella.
- Waterproof shoes with good grip for wet stone streets.
- A hat, scarf and gloves, above all for the north and the mountains.
- A modest layer for churches, where shoulders and knees should be covered.
