Catania sits at the foot of Mount Etna, and it is the easiest base for a day on Europe’s most active volcano. Two tours stand out on Viator, and they are built for different days. One is a five-to-six-hour morning on the mountain with certified naturalist guides, rated 5.0. The other is a full day for eight people that adds a lava cave, a tasting and an hour and a half in Taormina. Both cost about $100 to $115. Below, we compare two ways to book a Mount Etna tour from Catania, side by side.

The verdict
The morning tour is all volcano. It visits the Silvestri craters, spends about two hours on the mountain, stops at the Valle del Bove and the 1992 lava flow, goes into a lava cave with helmets and flashlights, and finishes with a stop for local products. Certified naturalist guides lead it in English, Italian, French or Spanish. It is rated 5.0 across 374 reviews, and not one is below three stars.
The Etna and Taormina day splits the time: a trek on a nature path in the Etna park, the Grotta dei Tre Livelli lava cave, an oil and honey tasting and a street-food sampling, then an hour and a half of free time in Taormina. It carries eight people at most, which is half the morning tour’s cap, and offers a cable car and off-road jeep to higher altitude as optional extras run by third parties.
Our pick is the morning tour if Etna is the reason you are going: it is cheaper, rated higher, gives more time on the volcano and leaves the afternoon free. Take the Etna and Taormina day if you have only one day for this corner of Sicily and want to see Taormina too, or if you want the option of the cable car to the upper slopes.
On the Etna and Taormina day, the listing states that the cable car, quad and bike options are optional extras managed by third parties, outside the provider’s control, and paid separately. Reviewers who took the cable car say it was worth it. The morning tour does not include the cable car either; its route stays on the lower craters and the Valle del Bove.
Which one is for you?
Take the morning tour if
- Etna is the point, and you want the most time on the volcano.
- You want certified naturalist guides.
- You want a half day on the mountain, not a full day in a van.

Take Etna and Taormina if
- You want Etna and Taormina in the same day.
- You want a group of eight at most.
- You want the option to take the cable car higher up, paid on the day.
- You like tastings: oil, honey and a street-food stop are included.
- You need a guide in German; departures run in five languages.

What travelers say
On the morning tour
Leaving early means you can experience the volcano and cave etc before it gets too busy or hot!
Joan_J, June 2025, via Viator
The hike up to one of the calderas was a little challenging but worth it.
Peter_K, October 2023, via Viator
On Etna and Taormina
It’s a long day but very much worth it. We paid extra to take the cable cars
Alison_C, May 2026, via Viator
The hike was medium but places seemed strenuous to me.
Anonymous, May 2026, via Viator
Both tours involve real walking on loose volcanic ground, and reviewers on both describe parts of the hike as challenging. Wear closed shoes with grip; on the Etna and Taormina day you can ask for trekking shoes. Bring a layer too: it is cooler on the upper slopes than in Catania.
How either fits a Sicily trip
From Catania, Etna is an easy half day. For wine on the volcano instead, compare the Etna wine tour from Taormina. If you are touring the island, the ten-day private Sicily tour covers the east and west, and in Palermo the street food tour is the one to book. Everything else is in the Sicily travel guide.
Planning the whole island? Our guide to things to do in Sicily covers Etna, the Valley of the Temples, Taormina, Syracuse and Palermo, with official ticket prices.
After the volcano, the Catania street food tour page compares two three-hour food walks that start in Piazza del Duomo.
