The verdict

Both tours are excellent, so choose by budget and diet. Do Eat Better is our pick for value. It starts at the Elephant Fountain in Piazza del Duomo, and over three hours the stops add up to a full meal, with at least one alcoholic drink and water. The itinerary opens with caponata near the cathedral and continues with a cone of fried fish at the fish market. The supplier warns that the guide may speak both English and Italian.

Streaty costs more and lists every bite. You get three drinks (beer, wine and a Catanese juice), arancini, two street food pastries, fish at the market, seasonal fruit, baked cheese and a dessert, plus access to a lava tunnel. It is not suitable for vegans, celiacs or guests with a dairy allergy, and only the morning tour works for vegetarians and pescatarians. It ends on Via Etnea.

Both offer free cancellation up to 24 hours before.

CRUISE STOP?

Both tours start in Piazza del Duomo, a short walk from the port, and last about three hours. One Streaty reviewer booked it on a cruise stop. Leave time to get back to the ship. For the volcano, compare the Mount Etna tour from Catania options.
