Catania Tourist Tax 2026: Rates, Exemptions and How to Pay
The Catania tourist tax in 2026: official rates since February 1, the 4-night cap, exemptions, how you pay and worked examples.

The Catania tourist tax (imposta di soggiorno) is one of the lowest among Italy’s big cities: €3.50 per person per night in hotels up to three stars, €5.00 at most, and only for the first 4 nights. Young children and residents are exempt.
Last updated: October 20, 2026. We also checked the rates on the official City of Catania sources linked below. Since rates change, we update this page whenever the city does.
Catania tourist tax 2026 at a glance
- Hotels: €3.50 (1★ to 3★) to €5.00 (5★) per person per night.
- B&Bs and guesthouses: €3.50. Holiday apartments, agriturismi and residences: €3.00.
- Maximum: 4 consecutive nights.
- Exempt: minors “within their 16th year of age”, residents and a few other groups.
- In force since: February 1, 2026 (City decision no. 218 of November 26, 2025).

How much is the Catania tourist tax per night?
Catania charges a single rate for all hotels up to three stars, and the rates apply all year.
| Type of lodging | Per person, per night |
|---|---|
| Hotel 5★ | €5.00 |
| Hotel 4★ | €4.00 |
| Hotel 3★, 2★ and 1★ | €3.50 |
| Tourist residences (RTA) | €3.50 |
| B&Bs and guesthouses (affittacamere) | €3.50 |
| Holiday apartments, agriturismi, holiday villages, residences and other lodging | €3.00 |
We took these figures from the City of Catania rate table, so you can check them yourself. The city also publishes this table on its official tourist tax portal. It names no seasonal rates, no reductions and no separate rate for short lets, which most likely fall under “other lodging” at €3.00; ask your host.
How much will you pay in total?
So what does the tax add to a typical stay? We calculated these examples from the official rates:
- A couple, 3 nights in a 4-star hotel: 2 people × 3 nights × €4.00 = €24.00.
- A couple, 7 nights in a holiday apartment: 2 people × 4 nights × €3.00 = €24.00. That is because the city stops charging after night 4.
- A family with two young children, 5 nights in a 3-star hotel: if the children are exempt, only the 2 adults pay, for 4 nights, so 2 × 4 × €3.50 = €28.00.

Who is exempt from the Catania city tax?
The city regulation, approved on October 28, 2025, lists these exemptions:
- residents of Catania;
- minors “within their 16th year of age”, as the regulation puts it. The wording can be read as under 16 or up to 16, so ask your property if you travel with a 16-year-old;
- State Police and other forces on public order duty;
- one person assisting a patient admitted to a local health facility;
- both parents assisting a sick child.
How do you pay the tourist tax in Catania?
You pay the tax to the hotel or host by the end of your stay, and they give you a receipt.
Most exemptions, however, need a self-declaration on the city’s form, which your host should have. Also, booking platforms can collect the tax only under an agreement with the city, and we found no official confirmation of a current agreement, so plan to pay the host.
Does the Catania tax apply on Etna or in Taormina?
No. The Catania rates apply only inside the City of Catania, so other towns follow their own rules.
For example, Taormina and the Etna villages set their own tourist tax, if any. So check with your property when you book.
Will the Catania tourist tax change in 2027?
The city had not announced any change for 2027 as of October 20, 2026. Its official portal shows no new rates after the table in force since February 1, 2026. So check back before you travel, because we update this page when that changes.
