Things to Do in Taormina: Ancient Theater, Isola Bella, Castelmola and Etna (2026)
Things to do in Taormina, Sicily: the Ancient Theater, Corso Umberto, Isola Bella, the cable car to Mazzarò, Castelmola and Etna day trips, with tickets checked September 2026.

The top things to do in Taormina sit within a short walk of each other. You get an ancient theater facing Mount Etna, a pedestrian main street, a tiny island reserve and a village perched higher on the hill. In addition, the town makes an easy base for Etna and eastern Sicily. This guide puts the ideas in order, with tickets, hours and transport checked in September 2026.
The short answer: see the Ancient Theater early or late in the day, then walk Corso Umberto from Porta Messina to Porta Catania. Next, take the cable car down to Mazzarò and visit the Isola Bella reserve, which closes in the afternoon. Also ride the bus up to Castelmola for the view. Finally, give one full day to Etna, either the craters or a winery. Two to three days cover the highlights.

If you arrive for a single day, however, a guided walk covers the theater and the old town fastest. Our page on a Taormina tour compares two guided options side by side. As a result, you can choose one before your trip.
The Ancient Theater: the first of the things to do in Taormina
First, the Teatro Antico is the reason most visitors come. The Greeks founded it, and the Romans later rebuilt and enlarged it. Today, the brick stage building frames a view of the coast and, on clear days, the snowy cone of Etna. In fact, few ancient sites anywhere have a backdrop like it.
According to the Parco Archeologico Naxos Taormina (checked September 2026), the theater opens daily from 9:00 a.m. to 7:45 p.m., with last entry at 7:00 p.m. A full ticket costs about €14 and a reduced one about €7 (checked September 2026). The park can change hours for evening events, so check the page before you go. For more ticket advice across the country, see our tickets in Italy hub.
How to beat the crowds at the theater
- Go at opening time. Cruise and coach groups usually arrive mid-morning.
- Or go late. The last hour brings softer light over the bay.
- Book online. The park sells tickets on its official site, which saves time at the gate.
- Check the events calendar. The theater also hosts concerts and festivals in summer, so seating may cover part of the cavea, the curved rows of seats.
Corso Umberto and the old town
Corso Umberto is Taormina’s main street, a pedestrian lane that runs between two old gates, Porta Messina and Porta Catania. Along the way, you pass shops, churches and small side alleys with stairs. Halfway along, Piazza IX Aprile opens into a terrace with a wide view of the sea. It is the town’s living room, so come back after dark for the passeggiata, the evening stroll.
Also look for Palazzo Corvaja near Porta Messina, a medieval palace with a mix of Arab, Norman and Gothic details. After that, continue to the cathedral square near Porta Catania, with its baroque fountain. Meanwhile, stop for a granita, a Sicilian crushed-ice dessert, often eaten with a soft brioche. Walking the Corso slowly is one of the simplest things to do in Taormina, and it costs nothing.
The Public Gardens
Just below the Corso, the Villa Comunale is a garden created by the Englishwoman Florence Trevelyan in the late 1800s. It also has shady paths, odd follies and benches facing the sea. In short, it is an easy free break from the crowds in town.
Isola Bella and the beaches below town
Isola Bella is a small island in the bay of Mazzarò, joined to the shore by a thin strip of pebbles. It is also a nature reserve, run by the same archaeological park as the theater. The park’s Isola Bella page (checked September 2026) lists it as open daily from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. A full ticket costs about €6 (checked September 2026). As a result, plan your beach morning around that early closing time.
The beaches here are pebbly, and the water is clear. Also bring water shoes, since the stones get hot. In fact, a swim at Mazzarò is one of the easiest things to do in Taormina on a hot day. By contrast, sandy stretches lie farther south at Giardini Naxos. For more coastal ideas, see our guide to Italian beaches.
Getting around: the cable car and buses
The cable car links the upper town with Mazzarò bay in a few minutes. It is run by ASM Taormina, the town’s transport company. According to ASM Taormina (checked September 2026), cabins run about every 15 minutes. In summer, from April 16, service runs from 8:00 a.m. to 1:30 a.m. In winter, it runs from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. A single ride costs about €8 for visitors (checked September 2026).
ASM also runs the town buses. For example, its Green Line links Castelmola, the town and the Taormina-Giardini station, according to ASM’s urban transport page (checked September 2026). A single ticket costs about €2 for visitors (checked September 2026). Meanwhile, the Blue Line serves the beaches from Mazzarò to Letojanni.
Trains on the Messina–Catania line stop at Taormina-Giardini station, down by the sea. Then take a bus or taxi up the hill. Also note that the old town is mostly pedestrian, so a car is more trouble than help. For rail basics, read our guide to trains in Italy.
Things to do in Taormina above town: Castelmola
Castelmola sits on a rocky peak above Taormina, and its views stretch along the coast and up to Etna. However, the village is small, with a square, a ruined castle and a few bars. Above all, try the local almond wine, served cold in tiny glasses.
The Green Line bus is the easy way up. Alternatively, fit walkers can climb the old stepped path from Taormina, which is steep and has little shade. Then take the bus back down. In fact, the trip up is among the most rewarding things to do in Taormina on a clear afternoon.
Day trips from Taormina: Etna, wine and Syracuse
Mount Etna, Europe’s most active volcano, dominates the view from town. Therefore, most visitors give it a full day. You can join a guided trip to the upper slopes and the old craters. Alternatively, focus on the vineyards on its northern side. Our guides to Mount Etna tours and Etna wine tours explain the choices.
Farther south, Syracuse and its island old town, Ortigia, make a long but rewarding day. Similarly, many visitors combine Taormina with Catania and Palermo on a wider route. For that, see our guide to things to do in Sicily and our southern Italy itinerary. Syracuse makes a natural next stop: see our guide to things to do in Syracuse.
Closer to town, film fans can take the Godfather tour to Savoca and Forza d’Agrò. Coppola filmed Michael Corleone’s Sicilian scenes in these hill villages, and the best-rated option picks you up in Taormina.

When to visit Taormina
Spring and fall are the most pleasant seasons, with warm days and a swimmable sea into October. As a result, most outdoor things to do in Taormina feel easier then. By contrast, July and August bring heat, higher prices and cruise crowds on the Corso. Meanwhile, winter is quiet, and some hotels close. However, the theater and the views stay open, and Etna may wear snow. For seasonal planning, see our guide to Italy in fall.
Fans of the second season of The White Lotus will also recognize the town and its coast. Our guide to White Lotus Sicily locations maps the filming spots. For the whole region, see our Sicily travel guide.
To fit Taormina into a week on the island, see our Sicily itinerary.
Each Sicilian town sets its own city tax; see how the rules work in our Italy tourist tax guide.
To cook with a local chef, the Taormina cooking class page compares a sea-view class with Chef Mimmo, rated 4.9 by 759 travelers on Viator, with lunch at Chef Massimo’s house.
