Things to Do in Syracuse: Ortigia, Neapolis and Tickets (2026)
Things to do in Syracuse, Sicily: Ortigia on foot, official 2026 tickets for the Neapolis park and the Paolo Orsi museum, Greek plays and how to arrive from Catania.

Syracuse was one of the great cities of ancient Greece, and it still splits in two for visitors: the island of Ortigia, a small baroque old town surrounded by the sea, and the Neapolis archaeological park on the mainland, with the Greek theater and the Ear of Dionysius. The best things to do in Syracuse mix both halves. UNESCO lists the city, together with the rock tombs of Pantalica, as a World Heritage Site since 2005. This guide covers the official 2026 tickets, how the two areas connect and how to arrive from Catania in fall 2026, when the train runs as a bus.
The short answer: give Syracuse two days. Spend one on Ortigia, where the Cathedral, the Fountain of Arethusa and the seafront are free to walk, and one on the mainland, where the Neapolis park costs €14 (reduced €7) and a combined ticket with the Paolo Orsi museum costs €18 (checked September 2026). Visitors under 18 enter state sites free, and everyone enters free on the first Sunday of the month. From Catania, Trenitalia runs buses on the rail route in fall 2026: the fastest take 53 minutes for €8.80.

Things to do in Syracuse at a glance
Prices for the state sites come from the Regione Siciliana archaeological parks; the castle price comes from the city’s official page. We read all of them in September 2026.
| Sight | Area | Ticket | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Neapolis archaeological park | Mainland | €14, reduced €7 | Greek theater, Ear of Dionysius, Roman amphitheater |
| Paolo Orsi archaeological museum | Mainland | €10, reduced €5 | Closed Mondays |

Reduced tickets at Sicilian state sites apply to EU citizens aged 18 to 25, according to the regional rules on free and reduced entry. Free entry covers visitors under 18 (under 12s with an adult), visitors with disabilities plus one companion, and everyone on the first Sunday of every month.
Things to do in Syracuse on Ortigia
Bridges connect Ortigia to the mainland, and the island is small enough to cross on foot in well under an hour. So walk it slowly: most of what makes it special is outdoors and free.
The Cathedral and Piazza Duomo
The Cathedral of Syracuse is a Greek temple in disguise. According to the Archdiocese, it rises inside the Temple of Athena, a Doric temple from the early 5th century BC that became a church in the 7th century. Even today, if you walk along the side of the building, you can see the ancient columns set into the wall. In front of it, baroque palaces line the long piazza, the town square, which looks its best in the late afternoon light.

The Fountain of Arethusa and the seafront
A few minutes from the Cathedral, the Fountain of Arethusa is a freshwater spring that rises a few steps from the sea, in a pool below the seafront promenade. The city lists it as a place open to the public. From there, the western seafront runs down toward the castle and is the island’s favorite spot for a passeggiata, the evening stroll.
Castello Maniace
At the southern tip of Ortigia, Castello Maniace guards the entrance to the harbor. Tickets cost €4 (reduced €2), and entry is free for visitors under 18 and on the first Sunday of the month, according to the city of Syracuse. However, the official page we checked does not list opening hours, so confirm them locally.
The market and the Temple of Apollo
Near the bridges, the ruins of the Temple of Apollo stand in the open, below street level. The street market that runs beside them is the place for Sicilian cheese, olives and fish; go in the morning, when the stalls are full.
Things to do in Syracuse at the Neapolis park
The Neapolis archaeological park, on the mainland, a long walk or a short taxi ride from Ortigia, holds the Greek theater, cut into the hillside, the Ear of Dionysius, a tall artificial cave with a famous echo, and a Roman amphitheater. The ticket costs €14, reduced €7, and you can buy it online through TicketOne, which is linked from the park page.
However, hours change every month. In the second half of September 2026 the park opened from 8:30 a.m. to 6:45 p.m., with the ticket office closing at 5:30 p.m. The park had not yet posted its fall and winter hours when we checked, so look at the park page before you go and arrive early: the ticket office closes more than an hour before the gates.
After that, pair the park with the Paolo Orsi museum, one of the most important archaeology collections in Sicily, a short walk from the park. It opens Tuesday to Saturday, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. (ticket office until 6), and Sundays and holidays 9 a.m. to 1:45 p.m.; it is closed on Mondays (source: regional parks). The combined ticket, €18, saves €6 on the two single tickets.
Greek plays in the Greek theater
Every spring, the INDA foundation stages ancient Greek plays in the theater itself. The season runs from May into early summer: the 2026 season opened on May 8, and for 2027 INDA has announced four productions, with Trojan Women scheduled from May 8, 2027 (INDA). If your dates fit, it is one of the most memorable things to do in Syracuse.
How to get to Syracuse from Catania
Catania airport is the gateway to Syracuse. You have two ways to make the trip without a car.
| From | How | Time | Fare (checked Sept 2026) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Catania airport | Interbus direct coach | Check the planner | Check the planner |
| Catania Centrale | Trenitalia bus service (replaces the train) | 53 min to 2 h 03 min | €7.70–€8.80 |
Interbus says on its site that the direct airport coach leaves every 30 minutes; fares and times are in its journey planner. On the rail route, Trenitalia was selling Catania to Syracuse as a bus service for October and November 2026 dates when we checked in September: the fastest runs took 53 minutes for €8.80, the slowest just over two hours. In practice, you buy the ticket on Trenitalia as you would for a train; just check where the bus stops.

Where Syracuse fits in a Sicily trip
Syracuse also pairs naturally with the east coast. For example, sleep on Ortigia for two nights, then continue to Taormina or book a day on the volcano with our guide to Mount Etna tours. If ancient Greece is the reason you came, add the Valley of the Temples in Agrigento on the south coast. Guided options across the island are compared in our Sicily tours guide.
Fall suits Syracuse well: the sea usually stays warm into October and the Neapolis park is far less crowded than in summer. However, keep in mind that the park closes earlier each month from October, so plan it for the morning and leave the afternoon for the island. That split covers the best things to do in Syracuse in two unhurried days.
