Luxury Experiences in Italy: Private Moments Worth It

The best luxury experiences in Italy are not about gold taps. They are about having a place to yourselves for a few hours: a boat under the cliffs of Positano with only your people on board, St Mark’s Basilica after the crowds have gone home, a Brunello cellar opened for your group, the Tuscan hills at sunrise from a balloon. So this guide gathers the ones worth the money, compares them honestly, and tells you which occasion each one suits.

Last updated: October 1, 2026. Prices and ratings read on Viator on that date.

The short answer: for a honeymoon or a proposal, book a private boat on the Amalfi Coast or around Capri. For art lovers, St Mark’s after hours in Venice or a private Vatican guide. For wine, a private day in Brunello country from Florence. Expect to pay from about $337 to $546 per person, or from about $520 to $1,502 per boat or car for your whole group.

How we picked

Every experience here is either private (only your group takes part) or gives access most visitors do not get, like entry after closing time. Also, each one holds a rating of 4.7 or higher on Viator, with at least 45 reviews, and states its inclusions, meeting point and cancellation terms clearly. In addition, where two good versions exist, we compared them side by side on a page of its own. We read prices on each Viator product page on October 1, 2026; no supplier paid for a place, and the order follows the occasion, not the commission. Our author, Tony, lives in Rome, works as a guide across Italy and has done every experience in this guide.

Choose by occasion

For a proposal

Two settings stand out. The first is the water off Positano at dusk: the private sunset cruise lasts 90 minutes, carries only your group and serves Prosecco on board. However, know one thing before you plan the words: in Positano the sun sets behind the mountains, so you get the town turning gold and pink, not the sun on the horizon.

Second, there is a vineyard. Two reviewers of the private Chianti wine tour describe the owner-driver arranging privacy at a winery, flowers and a photographer for their proposal. That is not a listed inclusion, so ask for it when you book and agree the cost. For proposal photographers in Venice, Florence and Positano, see our guide on how to propose in Italy.

For a honeymoon

Give one whole day to the sea. The private full day on the Amalfi Coast has 251 five-star reviews out of 254, including from couples on their honeymoon: swimming in caves, a glass of champagne on deck, lunch at a restaurant you can only reach by boat. Also, if you are staying on the island, the private boat around Capri gives you the Faraglioni and the grottoes in three or four hours. Then spend an evening in Venice inside St Mark’s after hours, when the basilica is almost silent.

For where to base the trip itself, see our guide to romantic destinations in Italy, and for more ideas, our guide to a honeymoon in Italy.

For an anniversary

Rise above Tuscany. The hot-air balloon flight from Siena lasts about an hour in the air, lands to a breakfast with sparkling wine, and two reviewers chose it for their 30th and 40th wedding anniversaries. However, it is a shared basket for up to 15 people, not a private flight; from about $358 per person with transfer from the launch spot, or about $474 with round-trip hotel transport from Siena. The launch site depends on the wind, and the supplier confirms it the day before. Our hot air balloon in Tuscany comparison sets it against a sunrise flight over Chianti.

On the northern lakes, a four-hour private boat on Lake Como leaves from central Como past Villa del Balbianello and Villa Carlotta to Bellagio, with a stop at each of the first and last. Moreover, it holds a 5.0 rating across 116 reviews, from about $1,328 per boat for up to six, and our Lake Como private boat tour comparison sets it against a shorter cruise with drinks on board. Otherwise, for shorter or shared options, see our Lake Como boat tour comparison.

For a milestone birthday

A 50th, a 60th, a birthday you want the whole family to remember: book the experience where everyone fits. The Brunello and Vino Nobile day from Florence takes up to eight people with lunch and tastings included, and the Positano full day at sea takes up to twelve. Finally, for car lovers, the Ferrari tour in Maranello compares the ways to get behind the wheel.

For a family, across generations

Private is at its best when grandparents and children travel together. The private early-morning Vatican tour collects you at your hotel and lists wheelchair access; the Murano and Burano private boat picks you up in Venice, offers child rates and ends with a glassblowing show children talk about for years. In Rome, a private driver tour covers the center with little walking, and a Colosseum underground private tour collects you at your hotel.

What “private” really buys you

Your own pace. A skipper who stops where you want to swim; a guide who stays in front of Raphael’s rooms because you asked. Indeed, reviewers of every experience in this guide mention it first.

A price that can fall as you grow. Viator lists private experiences in two ways. Some charge per person. Others charge per boat or per car, so a larger group pays less each: the Positano full day at sea is about $1,502 for up to 12, which is about $250 each for six and about $751 each for two. So check which model applies before you compare.

Limited places, booked early. Viator shows how far ahead each experience is usually booked. For this selection, for example, it runs from 42 days for the Lake Como boat to 121 days for a private tour of the Colosseum underground. Therefore, for June to September, book as soon as your dates are fixed; most of these can be cancelled free up to 24 hours before.

What the prices leave out

  • Lunch on the Positano full day, and the Emerald Grotto entry.
  • The Blue Grotto on Capri, listed at €18 per person, plus the tip the rowers expect.
  • Lunch and tastings on the Chianti day, listed at €70 and €35 per person and paid on the spot. By contrast, the Brunello day includes them.
  • Villa del Balbianello on the Lake Como boat, where you pay the admission separately.
  • Gratuities almost everywhere. The one exception here is the Skip-the-line Private Vatican tour, which includes them, and which is also the only non-refundable experience in this guide.

Questions travelers ask

What are the best luxury experiences in Italy?

By the reviews, a private full day at sea from Positano (5.0 across 254 reviews), St Mark’s Basilica after hours in Venice (5.0 across 87), a private boat around Capri (4.9 across 234), a private Brunello wine day from Florence (4.9 across 102) and a private Vatican tour (4.8 across 205), as read on Viator on October 1, 2026.

How much does a luxury experience in Italy cost?

In this selection, from about $267 per person for a private sunset cruise in Positano to about $1,502 per boat for a private full day on the Amalfi Coast, as listed on Viator on October 1, 2026. Also, priced per boat or car, private experiences get cheaper per person as your group grows.

What is the most romantic experience in Italy?

The ones couples describe choosing for their biggest moments: the private sunset cruise from Positano and the private full day at sea for honeymoons, a vineyard in Chianti for proposals, and a balloon over Tuscany for anniversaries, according to the reviews on each Viator page.

How far ahead should I book?

Viator shows these experiences are booked 42 to 121 days in advance on average. So, for summer, book as soon as your dates are set. Also, most offer free cancellation up to 24 hours before; the Skip-the-line Private Vatican tour is non-refundable.

Are these experiences wheelchair accessible?

Some are. The listings mark the private early-morning Vatican tour, St Mark’s after hours, both Tuscan wine days and the Rome private driver day as accessible. However, they mark the Capri boats, the Positano sunset cruise, the Murano and Burano boat, the Lake Como boats, the Colosseum underground tours and the balloon flights as not accessible. So confirm your needs with the supplier before booking.

Where do I book?

On Viator. Italy2Love compares the options and links to each experience; however, Viator and the supplier handle the booking, the payment and the cancellation terms.
