The verdict

First of all, these are two different days. Discover Rome in a Day is a car and a driver for eight hours around the landmarks of the center, priced for the whole group. As a result, it is our pick for families, older travelers and anyone who wants to see a lot of Rome with little walking: 269 of its 270 reviews give it five stars, it lists wheelchair access, and you can cancel free of charge up to 24 hours before.

The Colosseum and Vatican in a Day tour packs in the two big ticketed sites, with entry and a Colosseum guide included, and it collects cruise passengers at Civitavecchia. However, it charges per person and it is non-refundable, so it makes sense only when your date is certain.

Also, both are private, with only your group in the car.

Good to know before you book

ASK WHAT “INCLUDED” MEANS ON THE DRIVER TOUR

The inclusions on Discover Rome in a Day mention entry tickets, licensed guides and lunch, yet its itinerary marks the Pantheon and St. Peter’s as admission not included, and reviewers describe a driver who explains the city rather than a guide who takes you inside. So write to the supplier before you book and confirm whether a guide, tickets or lunch are part of your price. On the other tour, by contrast, the Colosseum and Vatican Museums tickets are clearly included.

Which one is for you?

Take the driver tour if

  • Someone in your party walks with difficulty, or it is high summer.
  • You are a group: at about $670 for up to eight, the cost per person falls fast.
  • You want the squares and fountains more than the museums.
  • Flexibility matters: cancellation is free up to 24 hours before.

Take the Colosseum and Vatican tour if

  • You have one day in Rome, perhaps from a cruise ship, and want both great sites.
  • You want the tickets sorted in advance, with a guide at the Colosseum.
  • Your date is fixed: the tour is non-refundable.
  • Everyone can manage a full day on their feet inside the two sites.

Who should skip both

First, couples on a budget who like to walk: Rome’s center is compact, and a day on foot with one or two guided visits costs far less. Also, wheelchair users should skip the Colosseum and Vatican tour, which does not list wheelchair access. Finally, for a lighter version of the same idea, the Rome golf cart tour covers the center in a few hours.

On Discover Rome in a Day

It was a super hot day and he had cold waters for us all day.

Tracy_C, July 2024, via Viator

Paolo knew the city inside out and upside down! Knew how to avoid traffic.

Terry_G, April 2026, via Viator

On Colosseum and Vatican in a Day

I looked up every option to tour Rome and this is the only one I could find that takes you to see everything in a spacious vehicle with great a/c.

Tami_L, July 2026, via Viator

We were very rushed through the whole experience.

Cheryl_H, May 2026, via Viator

Above all, reviewers of the driver tour mention parents and grandparents who could see Rome without long walks. On the Colosseum and Vatican day, most reviewers praise the logistics, but the few complaints are about pace: fitting both sites into one day leaves little time anywhere.

More of Rome, privately

Similarly, for a guide to yourselves inside the great sites, compare the private Vatican tour and the Colosseum underground private tour. Also, for two days with one guide, see the Rome 2-day private tour. Arriving by sea? Then our guide to getting from Civitavecchia to Rome covers the other options.
