A Colosseum underground private tour takes you where the crowds on the upper tiers never go: down into the corridors where gladiators and animals waited, then out onto the arena floor, with a guide who answers your questions and nobody else’s. We compared the two private tours of the underground with the best records. Rome: Private Colosseum, Arena and Underground Tour with Pick-Up is rated 4.9 across 111 reviews, from about $549 per person. Colosseum Underground Private Tour with Palatine Hill and Forum is rated 5.0 across 51 reviews, from about $555 per person.

The verdict
The prices are almost identical, so the choice comes down to flexibility. The Private Colosseum, Arena and Underground Tour is our pick: it collects you at your hotel, it has more than twice as many reviews, and you can cancel free of charge up to 24 hours before. Also, a Luxury version adds the Palatine Hill and a drop-off back at your hotel.
The Colosseum Underground Private Tour with Palatine Hill and Forum has the better record, with 51 five-star reviews out of 51, and it includes the Palatine in the standard price. However, it is non-refundable, you meet the guide near the Colosseum rather than at your hotel, and the underground time slot is only confirmed about a month before the tour.
Both are private, with only your group, and both require a passport or photo ID matching the names on the booking.
Good to know before you book
Tickets to the Colosseum underground are nominative. Therefore, give the full names of everyone in your party when you book, and bring the matching passport or ID on the day: both listings warn that a mismatch can mean refused entry. There is also a security check with a metal detector, and large bags and backpacks are not allowed. Finally, wear closed, non-slip shoes, which the first listing requires for the underground.
Which one is for you?
Take the tour with pickup if
- Your plans could still change and you want free cancellation.
- You are staying inside the Aurelian Walls and want to be collected at your hotel.
- The underground and the arena floor are the priority, with the Forum as a bonus.
- You like the option to upgrade to the Palatine and a drop-off.
Take the Palatine tour if
- Your date is fixed and will not move.
- A perfect review record matters more to you than a hotel pickup.
- The Palatine Hill should be part of the standard tour, not an upgrade.
- Everyone in your party is six or older, so headsets are provided for all.
Who should skip both
Wheelchair users and travelers with limited mobility: neither tour is accessible, and the surfaces are uneven. Also, if a guide to yourselves is not essential, a small-group underground tour costs a fraction; our Colosseum tour with the arena floor compares the group options, and our guide to Colosseum tickets explains what each ticket opens.

On the private tour with the Palatine
She was mindful of the heat, making sure we stayed in the shade and took water breaks often.
Mary_S, June 2025, via Viator
I unknowingly booked a total private tour, my wife and I thinking it was a small group.
Christopher_S, July 2023, via Viator
Reviewers of both tours single out the guides, the underground and the shade and water breaks in summer. Meanwhile, the few reservations on the pickup tour are about length: one reviewer in her eighties found three hours a lot, and another wished the car service had been smoother.

What do I need to bring?
A passport or photo ID matching the name on the booking, closed non-slip shoes and a small bag only. In summer, bring water and something for the sun.
Can I cancel?
The tour with pickup offers a full refund up to 24 hours before the start. However, the Palatine tour is non-refundable and cannot be changed. Terms as shown on Viator on October 1, 2026.
How far ahead should I book?
Well ahead: Viator shows these tours are booked 111 and 121 days in advance on average, the longest lead times of any experience in our luxury guide. So book as soon as your Rome dates are fixed.
Is a private tour worth it at the Colosseum?
If you have questions, children or a limited time in Rome, yes: reviewers describe guides who pace the visit, find shade and answer everything. If not, a small-group underground tour covers the same places for less.
