If you plan to propose in Italy, the ring is the easy part. The hard part is the moment itself: a quiet corner in a city full of people, someone ready with a camera, and a partner who suspects nothing. So this guide compares the proposal services you can book in Venice, Florence, Positano and on Lake Como, with what each one costs and what it leaves out.

Last updated: October 1, 2026. Prices, ratings and inclusions read on Viator on that date.

The short answer: for a surprise in a city, book a proposal photographer in Venice or Florence; they plan the spot with you and stay out of sight until the moment. For a proposal on the water, a private sunset cruise off Positano or a private boat on Lake Como. The proposal services cost from about $139 per person for a photo shoot in Florence to about $693 per boat on Lake Como.

How we picked

We searched Viator for services sold as proposals in Italy and kept the ones that are private, run in English, state what is included and offer free cancellation up to 24 hours before. Where a listing has no reviews yet, we say so. We also added the private boats and tours from our own comparisons that reviewers chose for a proposal. We read ratings and prices on October 1, 2026.

Venice: a photographer who plays your tour guide

The proposal photographer in Venice has the longest record among the services sold as proposals in this guide: 5.0 across 13 reviews, from about $303 per group of up to six (checked October 2026). First, you agree the spot and the plan by message after booking. Then the photographer meets you there for about an hour, and the photos arrive in an online gallery within five working days.

What makes it work is the cover story. One reviewer writes that the photographer “played his part as a tour guide”, so the surprise held until the last second. Another agreed on a code phrase for the right spot. Also, a third booked the night before and still got a plan. The meeting point on the listing is St Mark’s Square, but it is only a guide: the real one depends on where you want the photos.

Good to know: the gondola is not included, even if you choose the Grand Canal. One reviewer assumed it was, and two say the photographer arranged a ride for them separately. The photographer can also arrange flowers or champagne, at your cost. Free cancellation runs up to 24 hours before, which matters in Venice: two reviewers moved their date because of the weather.

If you want the gondola in the picture

The same supplier sells a proposal photographer in a gondola: a 30-minute private gondola ride, then 30 minutes of photos on land, from about $438 per group of up to four (checked October 2026). In other words, the price includes the gondola. However, the listing has no reviews yet, so you are trusting the supplier’s record on the version above.

Florence: the Duomo or Piazzale Michelangelo

The private photo shoot in Florence is not just for proposals; Viator lists it for couples, families and proposals. It lasts about an hour, rated 5.0 across 35 reviews, from about $139 per person (checked October 2026). You pick the backdrops: the Ponte Vecchio, the Duomo or the view from Piazzale Michelangelo. Afterwards, the edited photos arrive by email; the listing promises at least 30.

For a proposal, you can ask the supplier for a violinist or live music. A reviewer from September 2026 had the proposal photographed with the Duomo behind them. Note that the meeting point is near Piazzale Michelangelo, so send your preferred time when you book. Moreover, travelers book it about 84 days ahead on average, the earliest of the proposal services here, so plan early for spring and fall.

Positano: on the cliffs or on the water

On land, the proposal photographer in Positano works for 90 minutes and delivers about 70 photos. It is rated 5.0 across 8 reviews, from about $347 for two (checked October 2026). Then you choose the place, and the photographer confirms the meeting point by email. A short video for social media costs €50 extra, as listed. However, the listing says it is not wheelchair accessible, which is no surprise in a town built on stairs.

On the water, the private sunset cruise from Positano lasts 90 minutes, carries only your group and serves Prosecco on board. It is rated 4.9 across 162 reviews, from about $267 per person (checked October 2026). One thing to know before you plan the words: in Positano the sun sets behind the mountains, so you get the town turning gold and pink rather than the sun on the horizon. Our Amalfi Coast private boat tour comparison covers it next to a full private day at sea.

Lake Como: a private boat and a bottle of wine

The private proposal boat on Lake Como leaves from Argegno for two hours, past Villa del Balbianello and Isola Comacina, from about $693 per group of up to six (checked October 2026). Also, the price includes open wine and bottled water. In contrast, the photographer costs €300 extra and a bouquet €100, as listed. It has no reviews yet.

If you prefer a boat with a long record, the four-hour private tour in our Lake Como private boat tour comparison holds 5.0 across 116 reviews, from about $1,328 per boat for up to six (checked October 2026). However, the supplier does not sell it as a proposal, so share your plan when you book.

Tuscany: a vineyard or the sky

Two reviewers of a private Chianti wine tour describe the owner-driver arranging privacy at a winery, flowers and a photographer for their proposal. That is not a listed inclusion, so ask for it when you book and agree the cost first. For details, see our private wine tour in Tuscany comparison. For a sunrise moment instead, see our hot air balloon in Tuscany guide; just remember that you share the basket with other passengers.

How to keep a proposal in Italy a secret

  • Give the photographer a role. A “guide” or a “friend of the hotel” explains why a stranger with a camera follows you.
  • Agree a signal. A code phrase or a gesture tells the photographer you are about to kneel.
  • Book with free cancellation. Every proposal service in this guide offers it up to 24 hours before, so you can move the date if it rains.
  • Read what is included. Gondolas, flowers, champagne and video are often extras.
  • Book early. On Viator, travelers book the five proposal services here about 14 to 84 days ahead on average.
  • Pick the hour. Early morning means fewer people in the frame in Venice and Florence.

Cheaper ways to do it

You do not have to book anything. Piazzale Michelangelo in Florence is a public square, free to enter at any hour. Similarly, a phone on a small tripod with a timer can record the moment if you set it up during a “photo stop”. Still, the paid services solve the hardest part: someone else watching for the right second while you are busy saying the words.
