Frantoi Aperti (Open Olive Mills) is Umbria’s fall olive oil festival: for five weekends, mills open their doors while they press the new harvest, and hill towns host tastings, walks and dinners. The 2026 edition, the 29th, runs from October 17 to November 15. Here are the festival weekends, the towns taking part and how to plan a visit.

Last updated: October 21, 2026. We checked the information below on the official Frantoi Aperti website and on Umbria Tourism on that date.

What is Frantoi Aperti?

In fall, Umbrian mills (frantoi) press the new harvest, and the fresh oil is called olio nuovo. Frantoi Aperti invites visitors into working mills during the pressing to watch the process and taste the new oil. The Strada dell’Olio Extravergine di Oliva DOP Umbria, the olive oil route of the region’s protected-origin oil, runs the festival.

According to the official site, the 2026 program includes guided tastings, lunches at the mills and oil-themed dinners in restaurants. There are also walks, bike rides and trekking among the olive groves, plus music in the towns and shuttles to the mills. New for 2026 are tours of the DOP Umbria subzones linked to the 800th anniversary of St. Francis, a trail run and a cycling ride along the olive belt.

Towns taking part in 2026

Fourteen towns take part this year, according to the official site: Amelia, Arrone, Assisi, Bevagna, Campello sul Clitunno, Castel Ritaldi, Giano dell’Umbria, Magione, Montefalco, Spello, Todi, Trevi, Tuoro sul Trasimeno and Valfabbrica.

The organizers hadn’t posted the day-by-day calendar when we checked, and the site said the full program was coming soon. So check the event list for your weekend before you go, and book lunches and tastings where the program asks you to.

How to plan your visit

  • Pick a base: Assisi, Spello or Montefalco put you in the middle of the olive belt.
  • Go on a weekend: the mills and events open on the festival weekends, so plan around them.
  • Drive or book a tour: many mills are in the countryside, so a car or the festival shuttles help.
  • Bring oil home: if you buy some, pack sealed cans or bottles in your checked bag.

Truffle season overlaps, too: Città di Castello holds its white truffle show on October 31 – November 1, November 7–8 and 14–15, 2026. Read our guide to the truffle festivals in Italy.

If your dates don’t match a festival weekend, you can still visit a mill. For example, this olive oil tasting tour at an Umbrian mill with lunch runs near Perugia, and this olive grove tour with oil and wine tasting in Assisi suits a stay in Assisi. To choose a base, compare places to stay in Assisi on Expedia or places to stay in Perugia on Expedia.
