Things to Do in Pisa: Beyond the Leaning Tower (2026)
Things to do in Pisa beyond the photo: Leaning Tower ticket rules, Piazza dei Miracoli combined tickets, plans for 2 hours to a night, the Lungarni, Piazza dei Cavalieri, food and day trips.

Most things to do in Pisa sit in two places: the Piazza dei Miracoli, with the Leaning Tower, and the old town along the Arno River. So this guide covers the tower rules first, then the sights most day-trippers miss. It also sorts your plan by the time you have, from a two-hour airport stop to an overnight stay.
The short answer: book a timed Leaning Tower slot online, arrive 15 minutes early and leave your bag in the free cloakroom, which takes no suitcases. Then see the Cathedral, which is free, and add the Baptistery and the Camposanto with a combined ticket. After that, walk south through Borgo Stretto to Piazza dei Cavalieri and the river. So with two or three hours, the tower square and one riverside stroll are enough. Then, with a full day or a night, add the museums, the Keith Haring mural and a trip to Lucca.

How to plan things to do in Pisa by time available
Pisa is small, and the airport is close to the center, so even a short stop works. However, the tower slot decides the order of everything else.
Things to do in Pisa in 2 to 3 hours
This is the classic airport or train stopover. First, ride into Pisa Centrale and head to the Piazza dei Miracoli. Next, see the Cathedral and climb the tower only if you hold a slot. Then walk back through Borgo Stretto and cross the Arno on the Ponte di Mezzo.
Things to do in Pisa in one day
With a full day, climb the tower in the morning and add the Baptistery and the Camposanto. After that, walk to Piazza dei Cavalieri, the river and the Keith Haring mural near the station.
Things to do in Pisa overnight
Day-trippers leave by late afternoon. Then the Lungarni fill with students and locals at aperitivo time, the early-evening drink with snacks. Also, Pisa is a practical base for Lucca and the coast, as our Tuscany itinerary shows.
| Your situation | What to do in Pisa | Key tip |
|---|---|---|
| 2 to 3 hours from the airport | Tower square, Cathedral, one river walk | Leave suitcases in left luggage first |
| On the way to Cinque Terre | Tower square, then a train north | Book the tower slot around your train |
| Day trip from Florence | Tower, combined ticket, Cavalieri, Lungarni | Regional train, no reservation needed |
| One night or more | All of the above, plus Lucca | See the Lungarni in the evening |
Leaning Tower tickets and rules
The Leaning Tower is the bell tower of the Cathedral. It began to lean soon after building started in the 12th century, because the ground beneath it is soft. Today, the climb is the one part of a visit that needs real planning.
According to the Opera della Primaziale Pisana, which runs the square (checked September 2026), tickets go on sale online 90 days ahead. Also, each ticket is valid only on its day and at its time. So if you are late, you are not let in or refunded. In addition, the climb has 251 steps and takes about 30 minutes, on an uneven, slippery floor.
Age limit, bags and timing
- Age: children who will not have turned 8 by the end of the year cannot climb. Also, under-18s must be with an adult.
- Bags: bags go to the free cloakroom before the climb. However, it only takes small bags up to 20 x 30 x 38 cm, and large suitcases are not allowed.
- Timing: the official ticket page asks you to arrive 15 minutes before your time (checked September 2026).
- Changes: an order with the tower can be changed or cancelled up to 2 hours before the slot.
- Price: there are no reduced tower tickets. The official prices page lists €20 for the Cathedral plus Tower and €27 for the Complete visit plus Tower (checked September 2026).

Piazza dei Miracoli: combined tickets and the Cathedral
UNESCO lists the Piazza del Duomo, Pisa as a World Heritage site. Together, it covers the cathedral, the baptistery, the bell tower and the monumental cemetery, built between the 11th and 14th centuries. In fact, the interiors are among the best things to do in Pisa beyond the photo on the lawn.
Which ticket to choose
The Opera sells three formats. The Complete visit covers every open monument and museum in the square except the tower. Also, it stays valid for one year from the chosen date (checked September 2026). By contrast, the Complete visit plus Tower adds a timed climb, while a third option lets you pick single monuments. On the official prices page the Complete visit is €11, the Complete visit plus Tower €27, and the Cathedral plus one other monument €8 (checked September 2026).
- Choose the Complete visit plus Tower if you want the climb and the art in one purchase.
- Choose the Complete visit if the tower is sold out or your kids are under 8.
- Choose single monuments if you have under two hours and want one interior.
The Cathedral and fall hours
According to the official free tickets page (checked September 2026), the Cathedral is free. Still, you need a free pass from the ticket office on site, or any paid ticket, which includes one. Also, children under 11 enter the other monuments free with an adult.
Meanwhile, the official timetable lists most monuments from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. until October 18, 2026, and to 7 p.m. from October 19. However, the Cathedral opens to visitors at 10 a.m. Finally, last entry is 30 minutes before closing.
Getting there: the airport, Florence and Cinque Terre
From Pisa airport by PisaMover
The PisaMover shuttle links the airport with Pisa Centrale, with one stop at San Giusto/Aurelia. According to the operator (checked September 2026), the ride takes about 5 minutes. Also, it runs daily from 6 a.m. to midnight, later in summer, and a single ticket costs about €6.50.
By train from Florence, Lucca and the coast
Regional trains link Florence, Pisa and Lucca without reservations. According to Trenitalia (checked September 2026), a single costs about €8.90 from Florence and about €3.70 on to Lucca. From Rome, our Rome to Florence train guide covers the first leg.
Pisa also sits on the coastal line to La Spezia, the gateway to Cinque Terre. For example, Frecciabianca trains run on the Rome, Pisa, La Spezia and Genoa route (checked September 2026). So a stop here fits our Cinque Terre itinerary. Finally, our guide to trains in Italy explains tickets.
Once off the train, the city tourism office maps a walk of about 2.9 km to the Piazza dei Miracoli. It runs up Corso Italia, across the Arno and through Borgo Stretto, so the walk itself covers several things to do in Pisa.

Beyond the tower: free things to do in Pisa
Most visitors see the tower square and leave. However, the rest of the city is compact, lively and free to explore, because Pisa is a busy university town.
- Piazza dei Cavalieri: the political heart of medieval Pisa. Today, the sgraffito-covered Palazzo della Carovana houses the Scuola Normale Superiore, a leading university.
- Borgo Stretto and Piazza delle Vettovaglie: an arcaded street of cafés, then a square with a morning food market under its loggias.
- The Lungarni: the riverside streets along the Arno. Meanwhile, on the south bank, the tiny Gothic church of Santa Maria della Spina sits right on the water.
- Tuttomondo: a Keith Haring mural on the Sant’Antonio convent near the station. According to the city tourism office, he painted it in 1989, months before his death in 1990.
Then, at dusk, the view from the Ponte di Mezzo is one of the simplest things to do in Pisa. For a rainy day, the Visit Tuscany regional site points to the Museum of the Ancient Ships and the National Museum of San Matteo. Finally, if you can choose your dates, the Comune di Pisa holds the Luminara, small lights along the Lungarni, every year at dusk on June 16.
Where to eat in Pisa
As a rule, the streets right by the tower cater to day-trippers. By contrast, the lanes near Borgo Stretto and the university feel more local. For example, look for cecina, a thin chickpea flatbread sold by the slice.
