From the Livorno cruise port, Florence is about 1 hour 15 minutes away by regional train and Pisa about 15 to 20 minutes. Pisa is an easy trip on your own, and Florence works too if you plan the return first. Here is how to get from the ship to Livorno Centrale station, what the trains cost and how much time to leave for the trip back.

Last updated: October 21, 2026. We checked the port, train and strike information below on the official pages of Porto di Livorno 2000, Trenitalia and the Italian Ministry of Transport on that date.

These are the regional fares and times Trenitalia showed for a sample weekday, October 28, 2026 (checked October 2026). Intercity and Frecciarossa trains cost more: to Pisa, they were €8.50 and €15 on that day.

From the ship to Livorno Centrale station

Porto di Livorno 2000 runs the cruise terminal at Piazzale dei Marmi 12. It says its shuttle bus runs to the city center for the whole time your ship is in port, and an info point with multilingual staff is set up alongside the ship when it arrives. However, it doesn’t publish the drop-off point or the fare, so ask at the info point when you get off.

For the trains, the port’s directions say a city bus links Livorno Centrale with Piazza Grande, about a 10-minute walk from the Stazione Marittima. However, the port lists three passenger buildings: the Cruise Terminal, the Stazione Marittima and the Alto Fondale terminal. So that walk only helps if your ship is at the Stazione Marittima. The port also puts the station about a 10-minute drive away. We couldn’t confirm the bus line or its fare, so ask at the info point.

Livorno to Florence by train

Regional trains run from Livorno Centrale to Firenze Santa Maria Novella, the main station in central Florence. On our sample day, there was roughly one direct train an hour, taking 1 hour 12 minutes to 1 hour 23 minutes, at about €11.40 each way (checked October 2026). You can buy tickets at the station’s ticket office and machines, or on the Trenitalia website and app. We couldn’t confirm the current rules for validating paper regional tickets, so ask when you buy.

Plan the return first. Door to door, allow about 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours each way. As a rule of thumb, take a train that reaches Livorno at least 90 minutes before your all-aboard time. On our sample day, for example, the 3:00 pm train from Florence arrived at Livorno at 4:11 pm, which suits a 6:00 pm all-aboard. Even so, aim for an earlier train, so that this one is your backup rather than your plan.

Livorno to Pisa by train

Pisa is the easy half-day option. Regional trains to Pisa Centrale take 13 to 23 minutes and cost €3, with two to four trains an hour on our sample day. From Pisa Centrale, allow extra time to reach the Leaning Tower on foot or by local bus.

Can you see Florence and Pisa on the same day? It’s possible: regional trains between Pisa and Florence took 52 minutes to 1 hour 22 minutes on our sample day and cost about €9.80. However, it leaves very little time in Florence, so it suits travelers who accept a fast pace.

Check for strikes before your port day

Italian rail strikes are announced in advance on the Ministry of Transport’s strike calendar. As of October 21, 2026, it lists national rail strikes from 9 pm on October 29 to 8:59 pm on October 30, from 9 pm on November 20 to 8 pm on November 21, and from 9 pm on December 3 to 9 pm on December 4, 2026. The October 30 action also includes a 24-hour port strike. It also lists a nationwide general strike across all sectors for the whole day of November 20. We couldn’t confirm how the October 30 port strike affects cruise calls, so ask your cruise line. Then check the calendar again the week before your port day.

DIY or a shore excursion?

Going on your own costs less, but the ship won’t wait if a train is late, and any cost of catching up with it at the next port is yours. If that worries you, a guided tour plans the timing for you. Before you book any tour, check its terms on getting you back to the ship.
