Italy in November rewards travelers who come for art, food and wine rather than beaches. The summer crowds are gone, museums feel calmer and the white truffle season is in full swing. This guide covers the weather by region, what closes for the winter, where to go and what to book.

The short answer: November is a quiet, cool and often rainy month in Italy. It suits Rome, Florence, Venice and the other art cities. It is also prime time for Piedmont truffles and thermal spas. The south stays milder, and Sicily is the warmest option. By contrast, the Amalfi Coast and Capri wind down for the winter, so plan those carefully. November 1, All Saints’ Day, is a national holiday.

November weather, region by region

Italy is long, so November weather changes a lot from north to south. The table below uses 1991–2020 climate normals from NOAA’s WMO climate normals for four airport stations (checked September 2026). Figures are rounded averages, not forecasts.

CityAverage highAverage lowDays with rain
Milan (Linate)12 °C (54 °F)5 °C (41 °F)About 8
Florence (Peretola)16 °C (60 °F)6 °C (43 °F)About 10
Rome (Ciampino)17 °C (62 °F)9 °C (47 °F)About 9
Palermo (Boccadifalco)20 °C (68 °F)14 °C (57 °F)About 9

In other words, expect rain on roughly one day in three wherever you go. The north feels cold in the evenings, while Sicily often stays pleasant for walking. Also remember that the days are short. Clocks go back on the last Sunday of October, so sunset comes around 5 p.m. or earlier. As a result, plan outdoor sights for the morning and keep museums for the afternoon.

What closes or slows down in November

November is low season along the coasts. Many beach clubs, seaside hotels and restaurants in resort towns close for the winter, and some reopen only around Easter. However, cities and inland towns run as normal all year.

  • Amalfi Coast and Capri: ferries still run, but timetables change by season. For example, Travelmar, a main Amalfi Coast operator, describes its service as available all year round (checked September 2026). Still, check the exact routes for your dates before you book a hotel.
  • Hotels in resort towns: many close in fall. Confirm that your hotel is open for your dates, and ask whether its restaurant runs too.
  • Mountain areas: November sits between the hiking and ski seasons. Some lifts and huts close, then reopen for winter.
  • Lakes: boat services on the big lakes usually shift to a reduced winter timetable. Check before you plan a day of island hopping.

Where to go in Italy in November

The art cities

Rome, Florence, Venice and Milan are at their best without summer lines. You still need timed tickets for the big museums, but the rooms feel calmer. For example, a Uffizi Gallery guided tour is easier to enjoy when the corridors are quieter. For more ideas, see our hub on art cities and alternatives.

Piedmont for white truffles

Fall is white truffle season in the Langhe, the hills around Alba. The town hosts its famous fair, and restaurants shave truffles over fresh pasta and eggs. Then, add a winery day in the Barolo area, for instance with a Barolo wine tour in the Langhe. In Tuscany, meanwhile, a truffle hunt in Tuscany lets you follow a dog through the woods.

The north also has three big November events: the Merano Wine Festival (November 6–10), the Nitto ATP Finals in Turin (November 15–22) and two Muse concerts in Milan (November 20–21).

Thermal spas

A cold, gray day is the perfect excuse for a hot pool. Italy has natural hot springs from Tuscany to the islands, and many spa resorts stay open all year. Compare the options in our guide to hot springs in Italy and our thermal and wellness hub.

Sicily

Sicily is the warmest part of Italy in November, so it suits travelers who want light and color. Palermo’s markets, the baroque towns of the southeast and the slopes of Etna all work well now. However, the sea is too cool for most swimmers, and some small resorts close. See our list of things to do in Sicily to build a route.

Public holidays and events in November

November 1, All Saints’ Day (Ognissanti), is a national public holiday. Banks, offices and many shops close, and some museums change their hours. In 2026 it falls on a Sunday. That makes it the first Sunday of the month, a free-entry day at state museums under the Domenica al museo program (checked September 2026). Expect crowds at those sites, and book where reservations are required. November 2, All Souls’ Day, is a day of remembrance but not a public holiday.

Our guide to events in Italy in November covers the full calendar. Three highlights stand out:

  • Alba White Truffle Fair: the 2026 edition runs from October 10 to December 6, according to the official fair site (checked September 2026). Read our Alba White Truffle Fair guide.
  • Festa della Madonna della Salute, Venice: every November 21, Venetians cross a temporary bridge over the Grand Canal to the Salute church.
  • Christmas markets: the first markets open late in the month. For instance, the Bolzano market opens on November 26, 2026, according to its official site (checked September 2026). See our guide to Christmas markets in Italy.

What to book before you go

Low season does not mean you can skip planning. Some things still sell out, while others simply stop running.

  1. Timed museum tickets. The Uffizi and the Vatican Museums are best booked ahead, and the Last Supper requires a reservation.
  2. Hotels in Alba and the Langhe. Truffle weekends fill up, so book early if you plan a weekend visit.
  3. Truffle and wine experiences. Small groups and cellar visits have limited places.
  4. Coastal logistics. Check ferry timetables and hotel opening dates before paying any deposit.
  5. Rain plans. Keep a museum, a cooking class or a spa afternoon in reserve for wet days.

How November compares with other months

October is warmer and still feels like fall at its peak, as our guide to Italy in October explains. November, by contrast, is cooler and quieter, which often means lower hotel rates. Then December brings Christmas lights and markets. If you are still choosing your dates, our overview of the best time to visit Italy compares every season.
