The Cinque Terre is about two hours from Florence by road, and a day trip there is one of the most reviewed excursions from Florence on Viator. Two versions stand out. One is a guided coach day with almost 9,000 reviews and the option to hike between villages; the other is an eight-seat van with hotel pickup and a driver, rated even higher, for about twice the price. The expensive one is not the more complete one, and the difference is in what each listing leaves out. Below, we compare two ways to see the Cinque Terre from Florence in a day.

The verdict
Both days leave Florence early, spend the middle of the day in three or more of the five villages, and come back in the evening, with a stop in Pisa either optional or included. Also, travelers rate both near the top of the category. However, the two are built very differently.
The guided coach day includes an English-speaking guide and entry to the Cinque Terre National Park, and lets you choose between a version with hiking on the coastal paths and one without. Its group can reach 25. The regular price for either guided version is about $128 per person; a transport-only version, with no guide and no park entry, is about $64.
The eight-seat van includes hotel pickup in central Florence, the train and boat tickets between villages, and a Wi-Fi hotspot per couple. It does not include a guide: the listing states that the driver introduces the places on the road but is not licensed to guide at the sights, and that National Park tickets are excluded. However, reviewers describe the day as largely self-guided once you arrive.
Which Cinque Terre day trip from Florence we pick
Our pick for most people is the guided coach day. For about half the price you get a guide, park entry and the choice to hike, backed by a 4.8 across nearly 9,000 reviews. The van is the better choice if you want door-to-door pickup, a group of eight and the boat and trains handled for you, and you are happy to explore on your own.
On the guided coach day, the boat between villages is an optional extra: it runs from April to October, depends on the weather, and is confirmed and paid on the day. The provider states that if the boat stops for bad weather or strong wind, no refunds or discounts are issued. On the van day, the price includes train and boat tickets, with public boats running from April until about the third week of October.
Which one is for you?
Take the guided coach day if
- You want a guide, not just a ride: both guided versions include an English-speaking guide.
- You want to hike one of the coastal paths between villages; choose the hiking version.
- You want Cinque Terre National Park entry included.
- Price matters: about $128 against about $249.
- You are fine meeting at Santa Maria Novella station at 7:00 am.
Take the eight-seat van if
- You want pickup from your hotel in central Florence.
- You want a group of eight at most, in a Mercedes minivan.
- You want train and boat tickets between villages sorted for you.
- You are happy exploring the villages on your own once you arrive.
- You want Pisa included as a standard stop.
What each price covers
The guided coach day, from about $128
Included: an English-speaking guide; transport between Florence and the Cinque Terre by coach; entry to the Cinque Terre National Park; and time to explore the villages on foot, with free time in Vernazza, Monterosso and Riomaggiore. The itinerary lists La Spezia, Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza, Monterosso and Riomaggiore, with Pisa on the way back if you choose that option.
Not included: the boat, which is optional and paid on the day. On the September date we checked, a discount brought the guided versions to about $115 and transport only to about $58; treat about $128 and about $64 as the standing prices. Minimum age is 8. Hiking requires closed shoes with non-slip soles, and the provider does not accept anyone with walking difficulties or young children.
The eight-seat van, from about $249
Included: stops in Riomaggiore, Manarola and Vernazza, and in Pisa; hotel pickup and drop-off in the central zone of Florence by air-conditioned Mercedes minivan; train and boat tickets; bottled water; and a pocket Wi-Fi hotspot for each couple. Also, the drive to the coast is about two hours.
Not included: a professional guide and lunch; Cinque Terre National Park tickets and entrance to museums, castles and villas; pickup outside the central zone, available for a fee; and gratuities. Infants and children need their own seat and pay the full price.
Where each one starts
- Guided coach day: check in at 7:00 am at Piazza della Stazione, by the taxi stand at Santa Maria Novella station, across from the outdoor McDonald’s. There, look for the Walkabout Tours sign. Departure at 7:20 am.
- Eight-seat van: pickup from hotels in the historic center; from anywhere else, meet in front of Hotel Boccaccio and Tino Caffè on Via della Scala.
- Neither is wheelchair accessible. Both call for a moderate level of fitness: the paths and village streets are steep, uneven and slippery in places.
- Bring swimwear and a towel if you want to swim during free time; both providers suggest it.
- Both offer free cancellation up to 24 hours before the start, local time.

What travelers say
On the guided coach day
Was enough time for me to explore the town, hike to a lookout of the town, get a swim in, and eat at a restaurant.
Payton_D, September 2026, via Viator
stopped at 3 of the 5 villages and took a boat trip. The boat trip took a while so didn’t have long at the final village we visited.
Naomi_P, September 2026, via Viator
On the eight-seat van
We took the train and the ferry between the towns and it totally saved us from the brutal heat!
Beenish_A, August 2026, via Viator
This trip is not for people who have difficulty walking or who tire easily.
Melanie_S, July 2026, via Viator
Naomi_P’s note is worth planning around: on the coach day, the boat is optional and it eats into your time in the last village. If you would rather have more time on land, skip the boat and use the paths or the train. And Melanie_S’s warning applies to both tours: the Cinque Terre is steep, and both listings ask for moderate fitness.
How either fits a Florence trip
Both tours take the whole day, so put them in the middle of a Florence stay, after the Uffizi and the Duomo and David. For a gentler day in the countryside, compare the Siena, San Gimignano and Pisa day trip or the Chianti wine tour. Our guide to the Italian Riviera covers the coast beyond the five villages, and the Florence travel guide covers the city.
Questions travelers ask
Can you do the Cinque Terre as a day trip from Florence?
Yes. Both tours here leave Florence in the morning and return in the evening, 12 to 13 hours in total, with about two hours of driving each way and three or more villages in between.
Is Cinque Terre National Park entry included?
On the guided coach day, yes, on both guided versions; not on the transport-only version. However, the eight-seat van does not include National Park tickets.
Is there a guide in the villages?
On the guided coach day, the price includes an English-speaking guide. On the eight-seat van, the driver introduces the area on the road but, per the listing, is not licensed to guide at the sights, so the villages are explored on your own.
Is the boat between the villages included?
Meanwhile, the eight-seat van includes train and boat tickets. On the guided coach day the boat is optional and paid on the day, runs from April to October and depends on the weather, with no refund if it stops.
How fit do you need to be?
Also, both tours ask for moderate fitness. The guided coach day does not accept anyone with walking difficulties or young children, requires proper shoes for the hike and has a minimum age of 8.
Does the Cinque Terre tour stop in Pisa?
Pisa is a standard stop on the eight-seat van and an option on the guided coach day. The van’s listing notes that you book tickets to climb the Leaning Tower separately.
Our Cinque Terre from Florence verdict
Book the guided coach day, in one of its guided versions, unless hotel pickup and a group of eight are worth about $120 more per person to you. Either way, wear real shoes, carry water and leave the flip-flops in Florence.
