Florence rewards a guide more than most Italian cities, because the things worth seeing are close together and the queues are the whole problem. Three hours on foot from Piazza San Marco covers the David, the Duomo and the centre without you ever standing in a ticket line, and at 4.7 from two thousand travelers the execution is reliable.
The catch is not the tour, it is the booking form. This product sells in several versions, and the two things most people assume are included — the Accademia ticket that puts you in front of the David, and the Duomo terrace — are options you have to select. Which option to pick
This is the part that costs people their morning. The provider states plainly that the tour offers multiple options and asks you to choose the one that suits you. In practice that means the David is not automatically part of what you are buying: the Accademia timed ticket is an option, and so is the Duomo North Terrace. If you book the cheapest version expecting to stand in front of Michelangelo, you will not.
Before you pay, check that the option you selected names the Accademia. Everything else on the route — the Duomo from the outside, the centre, the guide — is in every version.
The provider states that during Christmas, Easter and liturgical celebrations, the Duomo skip-the-line is not guaranteed because of visitor numbers, and you may wait to get in. The tour still runs and the guide still guides — but if beating the Duomo queue is the reason you are paying, those are the weeks to avoid, or to book knowing the risk.

The complaints that do exist tend to be about expectations rather than execution, which is consistent with a product sold in several versions — one more reason to check what your option actually includes.

How it fits into a Florence day
Take it first thing on your first full day. It leaves you in the centre around lunchtime with the geography already in your head, which is exactly when Florence becomes easy: the Uffizi, Santa Croce and the Oltrarno are all within a short walk, and you will know which direction they are in.

Without it you are paying a guide to walk you past the Duomo, which is pleasant and not what most people think they are buying. With it, this is the cleanest way to get Florence’s two landmarks and the shape of the city into a single morning.
