Most visitors treat Bari as an airport and a train station on the way to Alberobello or Matera. That undersells it. The things to do in Bari fit into one or two unhurried days: an old town where pasta is still made by hand in the street, a basilica that draws pilgrims from across the world, a Norman-Swabian castle and a long seafront. Bari is also the easiest base in Puglia, with fast trains to the coast. This guide uses official opening hours and Trenitalia timetables checked in September 2026.
The short answer: spend a morning in Bari Vecchia, the old town, for the Basilica of Saint Nicholas and the pasta makers of Arco Basso; add the castle and a walk on the seafront in the afternoon; then use Bari as a base. Polignano a Mare is about 30 minutes away by train for €3.10, and Lecce under two hours (Trenitalia, checked September 2026).

Bari Vecchia and the Basilica of Saint Nicholas
Bari Vecchia is the old town on a small peninsula by the port, a tight grid of lanes, courtyards and small churches. Its landmark is the Basilica of Saint Nicholas, which holds the relics of the saint and draws Catholic and Orthodox pilgrims alike. According to the basilica’s official website, it is open Monday to Saturday from 6:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. and on Sunday from 6:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. It is a working church, so dress modestly and avoid visiting during Mass.
A few minutes away, the lanes around Arco Basso are known for the women who make orecchiette, the ear-shaped pasta of Puglia, on tables outside their homes. Go in the morning, when the work is in progress. For what to eat and where, read our guide to Bari street food, or compare the options in our Bari street food tour guide.
The Castello Normanno-Svevo
At the edge of the old town, the Norman-Swabian castle is one of the city’s main monuments. According to Italia.it, the official Italian tourism website, it is open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. every day except Tuesday. Inside, the main floor hosts exhibitions and collections of ceramics and jewelry, and the ground floor holds the Gipsoteca, a collection of plaster casts of the region’s monuments made in 1911. Check the ticket price on the official site before you go.
The seafront and the modern city
South of the old town, the seafront promenade runs along the water and makes an easy late-afternoon walk. Behind it lies the Murat district, the 19th-century grid of shopping streets that leads to the Teatro Petruzzelli, the city’s opera house. It is the part of Bari where locals go for the evening passeggiata, the traditional stroll before dinner.
