How much is the Rome tourist tax per night?
Rome sets a separate rate for each type of lodging, so the type of property matters as much as the stars. Guesthouses and holiday apartments are split into categories, so check which one your property belongs to.
| Type of lodging | Per person, per night |
|---|---|
| Hotel 5★ or higher | €10.00 |
| Hotel 4★ | €7.50 |
| Hotel 3★ | €6.00 |
| Hotel 2★ | €5.00 |
| Hotel 1★ | €4.00 |
| B&Bs, short lets and tourist apartments | €6.00 |
| Guesthouses (affittacamere), categories 1 / 2 / 3 | €7.00 / €6.00 / €5.00 |
| Holiday homes and apartments, categories 1 / 2 | €6.00 / €5.00 |
| Agriturismi, country houses and tourist residences | €6.00 |
| Hostels and mountain huts | €3.50 |
| Campsites and holiday villages | €3.00 (max 5 nights) |
We took these figures from the Roma Capitale rate table, so you can check them yourself. Youth hostels (ostelli della gioventù) are exempt; other hostels pay €3.50. The rates apply to nights from October 1, 2023, whatever the booking date. As of October 2026, the city still lists this decision as the one in force, so the rates have not changed since.
How much will you pay in total?
So what does the tax add to a typical stay? We calculated these examples from the official rates:
- A couple, 3 nights in a 4-star hotel: 2 people × 3 nights × €7.50 = €45.00.
- A couple, 7 nights in a B&B: 2 people × 7 nights × €6.00 = €84.00.
- A family with two children under 10, 4 nights in a 3-star hotel: only the 2 adults pay, so 2 × 4 × €6.00 = €48.00.

Who is exempt from the Rome city tax?
The city regulation, last amended in 2024, exempts these guests, among others:
- children up to their 10th birthday;
- residents of Rome, since the tax applies only to non-residents;
- guests of youth hostels (ostelli della gioventù);
- patients receiving care, one companion for each hospitalized patient, and the parents of a sick child under 18;
- coach drivers, and one tour leader for every 25 group members;
- police and armed forces staying on public order duty;
- people housed by the Civil Protection or by public authorities in emergencies, and relief volunteers.
How do you pay the tourist tax in Rome?
You pay the tax to the hotel or host, and they pass it to the city. Under the city’s rules, short-let intermediaries and online booking portals are also responsible for collecting it, so some platforms add it to your booking.
Either way, ask at booking whether the tax is included, because most hotels charge it separately at check-out.
Does the Rome tax apply outside the city?
No, because the Rome rates apply only inside Roma Capitale. In contrast, towns nearby, such as Frascati, Tivoli or Fiumicino, set their own rules.
So if you sleep near the airport or in the Castelli Romani, check with your property.
Will the Rome tourist tax change in 2027?
So far, the city has not announced any change for 2027 (checked October 20, 2026). Indeed, its official page still points to the 2023 rate decision. So check back before you travel, because we update this page when that changes.

Because the rate depends on the type of lodging, not on the neighborhood, you can pick any area. Our guide to where to stay in Rome compares the areas, or you can compare hotels in Rome on Expedia.
If you are short on time, a full-day tour covers the essentials. For example, this full-day tour of the Colosseum, the Vatican Museums and St. Peter’s fits the big sights into one day.
