Pompeii is a long way from Rome, and that is the whole story of this trip. The coach, the guide, the skip-the-line ticket and the return are all handled competently — 4.6 across six and a half thousand reviews says so. What no one tells you clearly enough is the arithmetic: a twelve-hour day buys you a two-hour guided walk through the site.
That is not a criticism of the operator, it is geography. But it changes the answer depending on who you are. If Pompeii is a box to tick on a Rome holiday, this is the efficient way to tick it. If Pompeii is the reason you came to Italy, sleep in Naples and give it a full day of your own.

The guided tour inside the site is stated as two hours. Rome to Pompeii is roughly two and a half hours each way on a good day, and the rest goes to the meeting point, the stops, the optional Vesuvius climb and lunch. Nothing here is padding — it is simply how far away Pompeii is.
Two hours is enough for the Forum, a bathhouse, a villa and the plaster casts, with a guide making sense of them. It is not enough to wander. One reviewer puts it exactly right: I wish there was more time to see the exhibit. If that sentence would bother you, this is the wrong format for your Pompeii.
The provider warns that anyone under 18 may be asked for an identity document at the site entrance. Reduced and free admissions in Italy are age-based and checked, so a passport or ID card in the bag avoids an argument at the gate after a two-and-a-half-hour drive.
