Rome to Naples Train: Frecciarossa vs Italo, Stations and Onward Connections (2026)
How to take the Rome to Naples train: Frecciarossa vs Italo, travel times, Napoli Centrale vs Afragola, fares, and onward trains and ferries to Pompeii, Sorrento and the Amalfi Coast, checked September 2026.

The Rome to Naples train is the fastest way to swap the capital for the south. The quickest trains take just over an hour. For most visitors, however, Naples is a gateway, so this guide also covers the onward leg to Pompeii, Sorrento and the Amalfi Coast.
The short answer: book a Frecciarossa or an Italo from Roma Termini to Napoli Centrale. FS Italiane gives 1 hour 10 minutes as the fastest time between the two stations, and Italo alone lists more than 30 trains each way every day (checked September 2026). Book ahead for cheaper fares. Check whether your ticket says Napoli Afragola, a separate station outside the city. For Pompeii and Sorrento, change to the Circumvesuviana at Napoli Garibaldi, under the same square.

Frecciarossa or Italo: choosing your Rome to Naples train
Two companies run high-speed trains on this line. Trenitalia is the national operator, and its route page lists the Frecciarossa together with the Frecciargento and Frecciabianca between the two cities, according to Trenitalia (checked September 2026). The Frecciarossa reaches 300 km/h, according to its Frecciarossa page. Italo, by contrast, is a private company that runs only high-speed trains.
According to the Italo route page, more than 30 Italo trains run each way every day, with fares from about €14.90 (checked September 2026). The same page quotes “55 minutes”. However, FS Italiane, which owns Trenitalia, gives 55 minutes from Napoli Afragola but 1 hour 10 minutes from Napoli Centrale on its Afragola station page (checked September 2026). So plan on about 70 minutes into the center, and check the time on your booking.
In practice, the two are close, so pick the departure that fits your day. Two differences are worth knowing:
- Through tickets: Trenitalia can sell a high-speed train plus a regional train on one ticket, for example to Salerno or beyond. Italo cannot, because it runs no regional trains.
- Classes: the Frecciarossa offers Standard, Premium, Business and Executive. Italo uses its own class names, starting with Smart.
Stations: Termini, Tiburtina, Napoli Centrale and Afragola
In Rome, most travelers board at Roma Termini, which both metro lines serve. Italo also lists Roma Tiburtina on its network page (checked September 2026), and some trains stop there too. As with the Rome to Florence train, always check which Rome station is on your ticket.
In Naples, the main station is Napoli Centrale, on Piazza Garibaldi at the eastern edge of the historic center. Below the same square sit two more stations you will use. Garibaldi is the stop for metro Line 1, which runs to Municipio near the ferry port. Napoli Garibaldi, meanwhile, is the stop for the Circumvesuviana trains to Pompeii and Sorrento.
Napoli Afragola, by contrast, is a high-speed station north of the city, designed by Zaha Hadid. According to FS Italiane, most trains that stop there also call at Napoli Centrale, but not all of them. So if your ticket shows only Afragola, you will need a further connection. For the center, the port and the Circumvesuviana, book to Napoli Centrale.
Booking your Rome to Naples train: early or on the day
High-speed fares rise as the cheapest quota sells out, so book early for weekends and holidays. On a quiet weekday, by contrast, buying on the day usually still works, at a higher price.
Trenitalia’s cheaper fares also come with deadlines. According to its fare conditions (checked September 2026), Super Economy fares sell until midnight six days before departure and allow no changes. Economy fares close at midnight two days before. Base fares, meanwhile, stay on sale and are the most flexible. Italo sells Flex, Economy and Low Cost fares, with flexibility falling as the price drops.
Regional and Intercity trains from Rome to Naples
Before the high-speed line, all trains used two older routes, and Trenitalia still runs regional trains on both. One follows the coast via Latina and Formia. The other goes inland via Cassino, the town below the Abbey of Monte Cassino. In addition, some Intercity trains on the Tyrrhenian line continue from Rome to Naples and Salerno, according to Trenitalia (checked September 2026).
These trains take much longer, and some journeys need a change, so check the connection in the Trenitalia app. Also note the ticket rule: a digital regional ticket activates at the scheduled departure of the train you chose, according to Trenitalia (checked September 2026).
From Naples to Pompeii, Sorrento and the Amalfi Coast
Pompeii
The Circumvesuviana is the local railway run by EAV. Take its Napoli to Sorrento line from Napoli Garibaldi to Pompei Scavi – Villa dei Misteri, the stop for the Porta Marina entrance, according to the Pompeii park (checked September 2026). Alternatively, Trenitalia regional trains on the Naples to Salerno line stop at Pompei, where the Pompei Link shuttle connects to the site.
One change matters for fall 2026. The Campania Express, EAV’s faster tourist train to Herculaneum, Pompeii and Sorrento, is suspended from October 1, 2026 until further notice, according to EAV (checked September 2026). Ordinary Circumvesuviana trains keep running. For entry rules, time bands and which ticket covers the Villa of the Mysteries, read our guide to Pompeii tickets. Deciding where to base yourself? Our comparison of Pompeii from Rome or Naples sets out both options.
Sorrento
Sorrento is the last stop on the same line. Alternatively, take a ferry from Molo Beverello, reached by metro Line 1 to Municipio. Once there, our list of things to do in Sorrento helps you plan the stay.
The Amalfi Coast
For Amalfi and Positano, many travelers stay on the Frecciarossa to Salerno, since Trenitalia runs through trains from Rome via Naples. From Salerno, Travelmar ferries sail to Amalfi and Positano all year, according to Travelmar (checked September 2026). From Naples itself, NLG runs a seasonal Naples to Amalfi ferry from April 1 to November 3, 2026, according to NLG. Our guide to Amalfi Coast ferries compares every operator, pier and fare.
Luggage and safety around Napoli Centrale
Luggage on board and in the station
There is no check-in on Italian trains. According to the Trenitalia FAQ, luggage travels free if it fits in the spaces provided. Italo, meanwhile, sets a limit of 75 x 53 x 30 cm per piece in Smart class, according to its luggage page (both checked September 2026).
On a day trip, you can leave bags at the station. According to Napoli Centrale, the Ki Point left-luggage office is in the main hall near platform 5 and opens from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. (checked September 2026). This matters for Pompeii too. The park admits bags only up to 30 x 30 x 15 cm and sends larger ones to its left-luggage area, according to its visitor rules.
Staying alert
Piazza Garibaldi is a big, busy transport hub, like station areas anywhere, and a few habits help. Buy tickets only from official machines, counters or apps. Politely decline offers of help with machines or bags. Keep your phone and wallet in a front pocket, and zip your bag on crowded Circumvesuviana trains. Finally, use licensed white taxis from the official rank.
