Naples tours split into two families: short guided visits inside the city, and full-day trips out to Pompeii, Vesuvius, Capri or the Amalfi Coast. Several city sites limit entry or run only with a guide. This guide sorts every format by time and traveler type, with the booking rules that catch people out.

The short answer: with one free morning, take an underground tour or a historic center walk that ends at the Veiled Christ. Book the Sansevero Chapel in advance, since reservation is mandatory. With a full day, a Pompeii and Vesuvius trip is the classic pick. If you want the sea as well, choose Pompeii plus Capri or Pompeii plus the Amalfi Coast. Food lovers should add a street food tour or a pizza class in the evening.

How we sort these options: by format, time and the kind of traveler each one fits, not by ranking operators. As a result, the table works with any company you find.

How to choose among Naples tours

Start with the calendar, not the reviews. First, count your free half days in the city and your full days for trips out. Then match each slot to one format. Also, avoid filling every day with coach trips, since the city visits are short and easy to stack.

  • One day in Naples: a morning in the historic center, then a food tour in the evening.
  • Two days: add Pompeii, with or without Vesuvius, as a full day out.
  • Three days or more: add the underground or the catacombs, then one island or coast day.

Also check closing days. For example, the Sansevero Chapel closes on Tuesdays and the Catacombs of San Gennaro close on Wednesdays, so plan those visits for other days.

Underground Naples: two different routes

Beneath the old town lies a web of Greek quarries, Roman aqueduct channels and cisterns. Later, parts of it served as air-raid shelters in World War II. Many lists treat “Naples Underground” as one site. In fact, at least two separate organizations run guided routes, and they differ.

  • Napoli Sotterranea in the historic center: the route reaches about 40 meters below the streets and takes around two hours, with multilingual guides. It also includes remains of the Greek-Roman theater. According to its official visiting hours page (checked September 2026), English tours start at set hours through the day, and groups of fewer than 10 people need no reservation.
  • LAES route from Piazza Trieste e Trento: the tour starts by the Royal Palace, near Galleria Umberto I. According to the LAES site, it also goes about 40 meters down and lasts roughly an hour.

Some aqueduct tunnels are very narrow, so claustrophobic travelers should ask first. For a guided option, see the Naples underground tour.

Historic center walks and the Veiled Christ

The historic center of Naples has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1995, according to UNESCO. Its street plan still follows the Greek city of Neapolis. A typical walk covers Spaccanapoli, the long straight street that cuts the old town in two, plus Via dei Tribunali, San Gregorio Armeno and the Duomo.

The Veiled Christ at the Sansevero Chapel

The best-known work is the Veiled Christ, the marble statue by Giuseppe Sanmartino inside the Sansevero Chapel museum. However, you cannot simply walk in. According to the Museo Cappella Sansevero (checked September 2026), reservation is mandatory, and online tickets open 60 days ahead, with more released two days before. The museum opens daily from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., except Tuesdays.

  • Photos: photography and video are not allowed inside.
  • Guided groups: a guide may bring up to 9 people on standard tickets, and larger groups need tickets from the museum group platform.
  • Tip: if a walking tour lists the chapel, ask whether entry is included or only a stop outside.

Catacombs of San Gennaro and the Sanità

The Catacombs of San Gennaro sit in the hill of Capodimonte, above the Sanità neighborhood. They hold early Christian tombs and frescoes. Meanwhile, the Sanità is a lively working-class district worth pairing with the visit.

Visits run only with a guide. According to the official catacombs site (checked September 2026), guided visits leave every hour from 10 a.m., with the last entry at 5 p.m., and reservation is always mandatory. The entrance is at Via Capodimonte 13, next to the Basilica del Buon Consiglio. The site closes on Wednesdays. The same ticket office also runs visits to the smaller Catacombs of San Gaudioso.

Food tours and pizza classes

Naples is the home of pizza, so food works as a tour format of its own. A street food walk usually covers fried pizza, cuoppo, a paper cone of fried seafood or vegetables, and pastries such as sfogliatella. By contrast, a pizza class puts you at the counter to stretch and top your own dough.

We compare those options in detail in our guide to the best food tours in Naples. For a quick pick, see the Naples street food tour or the Naples pizza-making class.

Day trips: Pompeii, Herculaneum and Vesuvius

Pompeii is the most booked day out among Naples tours, and the city is its natural base. Herculaneum is smaller and closer to Naples. It also keeps upper floors and wooden details. Therefore, it suits travelers who dislike crowds or have only a few hours. For timings and transport, read Pompeii from Rome or Naples.

Vesuvius: book the crater path first

The crater walk is path number 5, “Il Gran Cono.” According to the Vesuvius National Park (checked September 2026), tickets are sold only online, in timed slots that open 30 days ahead. The walk is about 4 km round trip, takes around two and a half hours and climbs to 1,175 meters. Also, the path closes on days of orange or higher weather alerts, with refunds in that case.

So if you book a combo tour, ask whether the crater ticket is included, or whether you must buy it yourself. One option is the Pompeii and Vesuvius day trip from Naples.
