Most Naples shore excursions go one of two ways: south to the ruins of Pompeii, or along the Amalfi Coast. We compared the best-reviewed option of each kind. From Naples: Pompeii Shore Excursion for Cruisers with Guide is rated 4.5 across 159 reviews, from about $76. Naples Shore Excursion: Private Tour to Sorrento, Positano, and Amalfi is rated 4.6 across 353 reviews, from about $313 per person.

The verdict
For most cruise passengers, From Naples: Pompeii Shore Excursion for Cruisers with Guide is our pick. It is the shorter day, about five hours, so it is easier to fit into a port call. It includes the coach from the port, skip-the-line entry to Pompeii and a licensed archaeologist guide, from about $76 per person when we checked.
Naples Shore Excursion: Private Tour to Sorrento, Positano, and Amalfi is for groups and families who want the coast rather than the ruins, at their own pace. It is the one of the two that lists a return guarantee on Viator: the operator commits to getting you back to the port on time, or to the next port of call if your ship has left.
Both offer free cancellation up to 24 hours before the start.
First, the return to the ship. The Pompeii tour does not list a return guarantee on its Viator page; it asks for the name of your ship when you book, so give it. Second, the driver on the private tour. The listing says the driver speaks minimal English, so add the guide option if you want commentary along the coast. If you would rather see Pompeii on your own, our guide to Pompeii tickets covers entry and timing.
Which one is for you?
Take the Pompeii tour if
- Pompeii is the one thing you want to see from Naples.
- You want a guide who explains the ruins, not just a ride there.
- You want a shorter day with time to spare before the ship leaves.
- You are traveling alone or as a couple and want the lower price.
Take the private tour if
- You want the Amalfi Coast towns rather than the ruins.
- You are a family or a group sharing one car.
- You want a listed guarantee on the return to your ship.
- You need wheelchair-accessible transportation: it is listed as accessible.
What each price covers
The Pompeii tour
Included: pickup and drop-off at the port of Naples, an air-conditioned coach, skip-the-line entrance tickets to Pompeii, a licensed archaeologist guide in English or Spanish, and headsets. The guided walk lasts about 2.5 hours and passes the Forum, the Temple of Apollo, the House of the Faun, the Lupanar and the plaster casts of the victims.
Not included: food and drinks. Groups can have up to 35 travelers.
The private tour
Included: port pickup and drop-off, a private air-conditioned car or minivan with driver, the Worry-Free Shore Excursion Guarantee and, depending on the option you book, a guide. The route covers Sorrento, Positano and Amalfi, with Ravello if time allows, and you choose how long to stay in each town.
Not included: gratuities, food and drinks unless specified, and the town access fees for vehicles with nine or more seats: €60 for Positano, €60 for Amalfi and €30 for Ravello, as listed. If your group needs a large minivan, ask whether these fees apply to your booking.
Where each one starts
- Pompeii tour: the Snack Bar Meeting Point at Molo Beverello, where a coordinator holds a sign reading “Pompeii Guided Tour – Veditalia”. The tour ends back at the same point.
- Private tour: if your ship docks at the Stazione Marittima, outside the cruise terminal building, at the exit of the security area under the blue “Stazione Marittima” sign. Start time 9:15 a.m.

What travelers say
On the Pompeii tour
Greeted warmly and very efficient transfer to Pompeii.
Helen_F, July 2026, via Viator
We had a little difficulty finding the meeting spot and thankfully the tour operator waited for us.
Shelley_B, September 2026, via Viator
On the private tour
Salvatore was an excellent guide. Arrived early, kept us moving, arranged reservations for lunch, managed the driving on narrow Italian roads!
Anne_N, November 2025, via Viator
Each stop you will be around an hour and the towns are extremely crowded.
Stacie_I, July 2026, via Viator
The Pompeii tour gets praise for its guides and its organization; find the meeting point early, because it is the one detail reviewers stumble on. On the private tour, the main complaint is summer traffic on the coast road. In its reply to that review, the operator says the full route usually takes eight hours but is much harder on a summer Sunday.

Can I cancel?
Both offer a full refund if you cancel at least 24 hours before the start, as shown on Viator in September 2026. Check the terms again when you book.
