Panerai: the Florentine navy watch

Panerai is the Italian watch brand with the strongest story. According to the official Panerai history (checked September 2026), Giovanni Panerai opened a workshop on the Ponte alle Grazie in 1860. From the 1910s, the company supplied precision instruments to the Italian Navy. It then registered the Radiomir patent in 1916, and the Luminor name followed in 1949.

Panerai sold its first civilian watches in 1993. Then Richemont bought the company in 1997, and in 2002 it opened a manufacture in Neuchâtel, Switzerland. So a modern Panerai carries Florentine roots but a Swiss movement.

For travelers, then, the must-see stop is the boutique on Piazza San Giovanni, facing the Baptistery. According to Panerai (checked September 2026), it has operated since 1926. Bulgari: Roman jeweler, Swiss watchmaker

Bulgari started as a silversmith in Rome in 1884 and moved to Via dei Condotti in 1905. Later, the family sold a majority stake to LVMH in 2011. Its watches, meanwhile, are Swiss. The Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry describes three Bulgari sites in Switzerland (checked September 2026). Designers work in Neuchâtel, complicated movements come from Le Sentier, and cases and dials come from Saignelégier.

Italian watch brands made in Italy

If you want a watch actually assembled in Italy, look beyond the luxury houses.

• Locman started in 1986 in Marina di Campo, on the island of Elba. According to the Locman company page (checked September 2026), a historic Milanese watch factory became its production partner in 1987.

• Anonimo started in Florence in 1997. However, it moved to Switzerland in 2013 after a change of owner, so newer pieces are Swiss made.

Which Italian watch brand fits your trip

• For heritage: choose Panerai, and buy it in the Florence boutique where the family business grew.
• For jewelry-style design: choose Bulgari, especially if Rome is already on your route.
• For a watch assembled in Italy: look at Locman or U-Boat. In fact, both brands present their watches as made in Italy.
• For a vintage piece: visit a specialist dealer instead, and ask for the service history before you buy.

How to recognize a real Italian watch

The name on the dial tells you the brand, not the origin. For this reason, check these points before you buy:

• Read the dial and caseback. Most Italian watch brands with Swiss movements print “Swiss Made”. In other words, that is honest labeling, not a fake.
• Know the Italian rule. Under Article 16 of Decree-Law 135/2009, an “entirely Italian” product needs design, planning, processing and packaging done only in Italy.
• Buy from a boutique or authorized dealer. Ask for the international warranty card, stamped and dated, and check the serial number against it.
• Above all, avoid street deals. Watches sold on blankets near monuments are almost certainly fakes.
