Christmas at the Vatican comes down to four things for a visitor. Midnight Mass needs a free ticket. The Pope’s Urbi et Orbi blessing needs none. St. Peter’s Square has a Christmas tree and a nativity scene. And the museums close on the big holidays. This guide covers all four for December 2026. Until the Vatican publishes the 2026 times, it uses the official schedule from Pope Leo XIV’s first Christmas, in 2025.

Last updated: October 20, 2026. The Vatican had not announced its Christmas 2026 schedule by then. In 2025 it published the details in stages, from late September to December 6.

Christmas at the Vatican 2026 at a glance

  • Christmas Eve Mass: Thursday, December 24, inside St. Peter’s Basilica. Free ticket required.
  • Urbi et Orbi blessing: Friday, December 25, at noon in 2025, from the central balcony of the basilica. No ticket for the square.
  • Ticket deadline: the Vatican does not consider requests for the Christmas Eve Mass that arrive after December 8.
  • Vatican Museums: closed December 8, 25 and 26, 2026. January 1 and 6 have been closing days in past years; the 2027 calendar is not out yet.
  • Jubilee: none in 2026. The 2025 Jubilee ended on January 6, 2026, and the Holy Doors are closed again.

What is the Vatican Christmas schedule?

The Vatican’s Office of Liturgical Celebrations published this schedule for Christmas 2025. Until the 2026 notice appears, treat it as a guide.

DateCelebration2025 time and place
December 24Christmas Eve Mass (“Midnight Mass”)10 p.m., St. Peter’s Basilica
December 25Christmas Day Mass10 a.m., St. Peter’s Basilica
December 25Christmas message and Urbi et Orbi blessingNoon, central balcony of St. Peter’s
December 31First Vespers and Te Deum5 p.m., St. Peter’s Basilica
January 1Mass of Mary, Mother of God10 a.m., St. Peter’s Basilica

Sources: the liturgical notice for Christmas 2025 and the Press Office bulletin of December 6, 2025. In 2026, December 24 is a Thursday and Christmas Day is a Friday. The Epiphany Mass on January 6, 2026, started at 9:30 a.m. only because it included the closing of the Holy Door, so that time is not a reliable guide for 2027.

How do you get tickets for Midnight Mass at the Vatican?

Write to the Prefecture of the Papal Household before December 8. Tickets for papal celebrations are free. The Prefecture calls them “entirely free”, so anyone selling them is not the Vatican. According to the Prefecture’s ticket page:

  • send your request by mail to the Prefecture of the Papal Household, 00120 Vatican City State;
  • or send it by fax to +39 06 6988 5863. The Prefecture lists no email or online form for lay visitors, so allow time for international mail;
  • give the date, the number of tickets, your name, a postal address and a phone number;
  • the Prefecture does not consider Christmas requests that arrive after December 8, because the basilica has limited space;
  • you collect the tickets the day before or as arranged. The Prefecture’s page points to an office inside the Paul VI Audience Hall, while Rome’s tourist board has mentioned the Bronze Door, so confirm the place when you get your reply.

If you miss the deadline, you can follow the celebrations on giant screens in St. Peter’s Square. Because the square fills early, come in good time. In addition, the Italian State Police run security checks in the right-hand colonnade (basilica visitor page).

Is the Urbi et Orbi blessing free to attend?

Yes. The Pope gives the Christmas message and the Urbi et Orbi blessing (“to the city and to the world”) from the central balcony of St. Peter’s. In fact, outdoor papal events in the square need no ticket. In 2025 the blessing took place at noon on December 25. So arrive well before noon if you want a spot inside the colonnade. Also, leave large bags at your hotel, because everyone goes through security.

When is the Vatican Christmas tree lit?

In 2025 the Vatican unveiled the tree and the nativity scene on Monday, December 15, at 5 p.m. Both then stayed up until January 11, 2026. The tree was a 25-meter (82-foot) spruce from the Val d’Ultimo in South Tyrol. It was also a gift from two towns, Lagundo and Ultimo. The nativity scene came from the Diocese of Nocera Inferiore-Sarno, near Salerno (Vatican press release).

So far, the Vatican has not named the 2026 donors or the lighting date (checked October 20, 2026). If 2026 follows 2025, late December to early January is the safest window.

The 100 Nativity Scenes exhibition

Under Bernini’s colonnade, the “100 Presepi in Vaticano” exhibition shows nativity scenes from Italy and abroad. The eighth edition ran from December 8, 2025, to January 6, 2026 (Turismo Roma). However, the 2026 dates are not out yet.

Are the Vatican Museums open at Christmas?

Not on the main holidays. According to the official calendar, the museums and the Sistine Chapel close on December 8, 25 and 26. January 1 and 6 were also closing days this year, but the 2027 calendar is not published yet. On the other days the museums open Monday to Saturday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., with last entry at 6 p.m.

Entry is free on the last Sunday of each month, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. (last entry 12:30 p.m.), unless that Sunday falls on December 25, 26 or 31. In 2026 the last Sunday of December is December 27, so under this rule it should be a free day. As a result, expect very long lines. Buy regular tickets only on the official ticket site; the museums warn that look-alike sites charge more.

Dress code: the museums do not admit sleeveless or low-cut tops, shorts above the knee, miniskirts or hats (museum rules). Use the same standard for Mass in the basilica. For more on timed entry, see our Vatican Museums tickets guide.

Can you visit St. Peter’s Basilica over Christmas?

Usually yes, outside the papal celebrations. Since June 1, 2026, the basilica has opened daily from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. (official hours); the dome followed shorter winter hours last season, 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. However, the basilica can limit access around papal Masses. For that reason, avoid a sightseeing visit on December 24, 25 or 31.

What else happens around Christmas at the Vatican?

  • December 8, Immaculate Conception: in 2025 Pope Leo XIV prayed at the Column of the Immaculate Conception near the Spanish Steps at about 4 p.m. (Press Office). The 2026 program is not out yet.
  • December 31: the Te Deum in the basilica, then the city’s party; see New Year’s Eve in Rome.
  • January 6, Epiphany: the papal Mass and the Viva la Befana parade on Via della Conciliazione; see Epiphany in Italy.

Where to stay for Christmas at the Vatican

The Prati district and the streets around Borgo Pio put you within walking distance of St. Peter’s Square, which matters on December 24 and 25, when traffic is heavy and you will want to arrive early. The nearest Metro A station is Ottaviano. Our guide to where to stay in Rome compares the neighborhoods, or you can compare hotels in Rome on Expedia. For the rest of the city’s holiday program, see Christmas in Rome and events in Italy in December 2026.

We also used the press release on the 2025 tree, the Vatican Museums calendar and the basilica’s opening hours. For the end of the Jubilee, see L’Osservatore Romano. We will update this page when the Vatican publishes the 2026 schedule.
