Christmas in Rome runs from December 8 to January 6, and its three big draws are free: the Pope’s Christmas Masses, the tree and nativity scene in St. Peter’s Square, and the Piazza Navona Christmas fair. Tickets for the Vatican Masses cost nothing but must be requested in advance. The Vatican Museums and the Colosseum close on December 25.

Key facts

  • Christmas Day 2026 falls on a Friday. December 8, 25 and 26, January 1 and January 6 are public holidays in Italy.
  • In 2025, Pope Leo XIV celebrated Christmas Eve Mass at 10 PM and gave the Urbi et Orbi blessing at noon on December 25. The Vatican had not yet published the 2026 times on September 24, 2026.
  • Tickets for papal Masses are always free, according to the Vatican.
  • The 2026 Christmas tree in St. Peter’s Square comes from Terranova di Pollino in Basilicata, and the nativity scene from the Archdiocese of Chieti-Vasto in Abruzzo.
  • The Vatican Museums close on December 8, 25 and 26, 2026. The Colosseum closes on December 25, 2026 and January 1, 2027.

When is the Christmas season in Rome?

The season starts on December 8, the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, and ends on January 6, Epiphany. Epiphany is also the day of La Befana, the kindly witch of Italian folklore who brings gifts to children on the night of January 5.

For planning, the weeks split in three:

  • December 8–23: decorations and the Piazza Navona fair are up, and sights keep regular hours, although the Vatican Museums close on December 8.
  • December 24–26: the Vatican Masses and the Urbi et Orbi blessing. This is also when most closures fall.
  • December 27–January 6: New Year’s Eve, then Epiphany. In 2025, the Befana arrived in Piazza Navona at 2 PM on January 6 to close the fair.

If you want the atmosphere without the closures, aim for December 18–23 or December 27–30.

How do you attend Christmas Mass at the Vatican?

Request a free ticket from the Vatican well before December, or join the crowd in St. Peter’s Square for the Urbi et Orbi blessing, which needs no ticket. The Vatican states that tickets for the Pope’s audiences and ceremonies are always free. Lay visitors book them through the Prefecture of the Papal Household’s online reservation page, linked from the Vatican’s official website.

For Pope Leo XIV’s first Christmas, in 2025, the Office of Liturgical Celebrations published this schedule:

Date (2025–2026 season)CelebrationTime and place
December 24Christmas Eve Mass (“Midnight Mass”)10 PM, St. Peter’s Basilica

January 1Mass for the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God10 AM, St. Peter’s Basilica

The 2026 times had not been published when this guide was updated. The 2025 calendar came out in late September 2025, so check the Vatican’s liturgical calendar before you plan your evening around a start time.

A note on paid packages: some operators sell Christmas Eve packages built around a Mass ticket, with a private car and an escort. One such listing on Viator starts from about $2,087 (checked September 24, 2026). Since the ticket itself is free from the Vatican, check what the price actually covers before you book.

Skip the basilica if: you can’t stand for long periods or dislike crowds. The Urbi et Orbi blessing at noon on Christmas Day is open to anyone in the square, and it is shorter.

What will St. Peter’s Square look like for Christmas 2026?

The 2026 tree is a white fir of about 25 meters (82 feet) from the Cugno dell’Acero forest in Terranova di Pollino, in the southern region of Basilicata. Its ornaments are being made by children undergoing cancer treatment, in ceramics workshops run by the Lene Thun Foundation, according to Vatican News.

The nativity scene in the square comes from the Archdiocese of Chieti-Vasto in Abruzzo. It sets the Nativity in the rural Abruzzo of the past, with straw-roofed huts, terracotta flocks and shepherds in traditional dress. Indoors, the nativity in the Paul VI Audience Hall comes from the Viareggio Carnival Foundation and has a seafaring theme, with fishermen in the role of the Magi.

The unveiling date had not been announced on September 24, 2026. St. Peter’s Square is free to enter.

The 100 Nativity Scenes exhibition

Under Bernini’s left-hand colonnade, the “100 Presepi in Vaticano” exhibition shows more than 100 nativity scenes from around the world. The 2025–2026 edition ran from December 8 to January 6, from 10 AM to 7:30 PM, closing at 5 PM on December 24 and 31. Entry was free, with no booking.

When is the Piazza Navona Christmas market?

In 2025, the Piazza Navona Christmas fair opened on December 6 and ran until January 6. Roma Capitale kept the square open every day from 9 AM to 1 AM, and until 2 AM before and on holidays. The 2026 dates had not been announced on September 24, 2026.

The stalls around the Fountain of the Four Rivers sell handmade nativity figures, ornaments, wooden toys and seasonal sweets. In 2025, the city also added evening concerts and activities for children.

Skip it if: you are hoping for a German-style market with mulled wine and food huts. Piazza Navona is a traditional Roman fair, busiest in the evenings and around January 6.

What is open in Rome on Christmas Day?

On December 25 the Vatican Museums and the Colosseum close, but churches, the squares and the Piazza Navona fair stay open. Plan museum visits for the days before and after Christmas.

Which Christmas tours in Rome are worth booking?

Christmas-themed tours in Rome are few and have short track records, so pick one for the evening lights and book everything else as a regular tour. When Italy2Love checked Viator on September 24, 2026, most Christmas tours in Rome had fewer than 10 reviews. Only one had more than 30.

The Christmas lights walking tour

The “Lights and Legends” Christmas walking tour is rated 4.7/5 across 32 reviews and starts from about $63 (checked September 24, 2026). It runs about 2 hours from 5:30 PM, with groups capped at 15, per the listing.

The route starts at the bottom of the Spanish Steps and runs down Via del Corso to the Pantheon and Piazza Navona. It then follows Via dei Coronari to Castel Sant’Angelo and ends in St. Peter’s Square, in front of the nativity. The listing marks it wheelchair accessible. Minimum numbers apply, so a departure can be canceled, with a refund or an alternative.

What do Romans eat at Christmas?

Christmas Eve dinner, la Vigilia, is traditionally meatless and built around fish, while Christmas Day lunch is the big family meal. Across Italy, panettone (a tall, dome-shaped sweet bread with candied fruit and raisins), pandoro (a star-shaped sweet bread without fruit) and torrone (nougat) are the season’s sweets.

Some restaurants close on December 25, so book your Christmas Eve and Christmas Day meals ahead, or check whether your hotel serves them. For the rest of the trip, see what to order in Italy2Love’s Rome food tour guide.

Where should you stay in Rome at Christmas?

Stay in Prati if the Vatican Masses are your priority, and in the centro storico, the historic center, if you want to walk to Piazza Navona and the lights. Prati is a residential neighborhood next to Vatican City, so you can walk home after the Christmas Eve Mass. Trastevere suits food lovers, but it is livelier and noisier at night.
