Mount Etna tours range from a relaxed jeep ride past old lava flows to a full-day hike toward the summit craters with a volcano guide. In short, the right one depends on where you are staying, how fit you are and how high the rules and the volcano allow you to go that week. This guide, therefore, puts those choices in order.

The short answer: if you stay in Catania, the south side and Rifugio Sapienza are the natural base. By contrast, from Taormina, many tours use the north side or combine the volcano with a winery. Pick a jeep tour for an easy half day, the cable car plus off-road vehicles to gain height fast, or a guided hike for the summit area. Above a set altitude, local ordinances require an authorized guide, and eruptions can close the top at short notice.

Etna from Catania or from Taormina

Etna rises right behind Catania, on the east coast of Sicily. As a result, most trips from the city head up the south side to Rifugio Sapienza, the base area above Nicolosi where the cable car starts. In other words, you spend less time in the van and more time on the mountain.

Taormina, however, sits farther north along the coast. For that reason, tours from there often use the north side, around Piano Provenzana above Linguaglossa, or they turn the day into a volcano-and-wine trip through the vineyards on the northern slopes. However, some Taormina tours still drive around to the south side, so check the route before you book.

  • Choose Catania if you want the cable car, the summit area or the widest choice of hikes.
  • Choose Taormina if you want a shorter volcano visit paired with a winery lunch.
  • Driving yourself? Then you can reach both base areas by car, but many tours include gear and a guide you would otherwise arrange yourself.

Types of Mount Etna tours

Jeep and 4×4 tours

First, a jeep tour is the easiest way to see the volcano. Typically, a driver-guide takes a small group along lava fields, lets you walk into extinct side craters and often stops at a lava tube cave. This is the safest pick for mixed groups, since nobody has to climb far.

Guided hikes to the summit area

For the craters themselves, you need a proper hike and, above a certain altitude, a guide. Also, expect loose volcanic sand, steep ground and thin air. In addition, the route and the highest point change with the volcano, so a good guide will tell you in advance that the plan can shift on the day.

Cable car plus off-road vehicles

On the south side, the Funivia dell’Etna cable car climbs from 1,923 meters at Rifugio Sapienza to an upper station at 2,500 meters; it runs daily, subject to weather and technical conditions (checked September 2026). From there, off-road vehicles and guides can take you higher, within the limits of the ordinance in force. Also, the upper station rents windbreakers, boots and poles if you arrive underdressed.

Wine tasting on the slopes

Meanwhile, Etna is also one of Sicily’s best-known wine areas. In fact, its vineyards grow on volcanic soil, mostly with the red Nerello Mascalese and the white Carricante grapes. Therefore, a wine tour suits travelers who care more about lunch and landscape than about the craters. For wine regions elsewhere, see our wine tours in Italy.

Sunset tours

Sunset tours usually start in the afternoon and return after dark. On a clear evening, above all, the light over the lava fields and the coast is the main draw. Still, temperatures drop fast once the sun goes down, so bring more layers than you think you need.

Altitude rules: when you need an authorized guide

Many online guides skip this part, yet it matters. First, the mayors of the towns on the slopes set access to the summit area through local ordinances. These include Nicolosi on the south side and Linguaglossa and Castiglione di Sicilia on the north. Then the limits change when volcanic activity changes.

The general pattern is this. For instance, below roughly 2,500 meters, you can walk freely on marked trails. Above that, only authorized alpine or volcanological guides can lead you through a higher band. Finally, the authorities can close the zone right around the active craters to all visitors. For example, the Etna North volcanological guides summarize separate upper limits for the south and north sides under different mayoral ordinances (checked September 2026). Similarly, their summary of a 2025 ordinance for the north side sets a guided-only zone and a limit of 2,800 meters for off-road vehicles (checked September 2026).

Because these numbers move, we do not give one fixed altitude here. Instead, ask your operator which ordinance applies on your date and how high the tour actually goes. If a tour promises “the summit craters” without that detail, treat the claim with caution.

Eruptions and closures

Above all, Etna is one of the most active volcanoes in the world. In fact, UNESCO inscribed Mount Etna as a World Heritage Site in 2013, noting a record of eruptions documented for at least 2,700 years (checked September 2026). Activity is frequent, and it does not follow a tour schedule.

So, for the current situation, read the weekly bulletin of the INGV Etna Observatory. Its bulletin of September 22, 2026 reported ash emissions from the summit craters and strombolian activity at Bocca Nuova (checked September 2026). In practice, that kind of activity can mean closed upper zones, rerouted hikes or a switch to lower trails. Ash can also briefly affect flights at Catania airport, so leave slack in your plans.

  • Book with free cancellation when possible, since weather and activity can cancel the upper part of a tour.
  • Keep a flexible day. Put Etna early in your Sicily stay, so you can move it if the upper mountain closes.
  • Accept the change. A guide who turns back is doing their job.

What to wear on Mount Etna tours

First of all, the temperature at the top has little to do with the beach below. Also, wind is common, and the ground is rough and sharp. Pack for mountain weather, even in summer:

  • Closed hiking shoes or boots with good grip. Volcanic sand gets into sneakers and sandals.
  • Layers: for example, a base layer, a fleece and a windproof jacket. In fall, add a hat and gloves for high tours.
  • Long pants, since the lava rock scrapes skin.
  • Sun protection: sunglasses and sunscreen, because the sun is strong at altitude.
  • Water and a snack, even on short tours.

If you forget something, the cable car station rents basic gear. However, fit and quality vary, so bring your own shoes if you can.

How to choose among Mount Etna tours

  1. Start from your base. Catania for the south side and the cable car; Taormina for the north side and wineries.
  2. Be honest about fitness. A summit-area hike is a real mountain day; a jeep tour is not.
  3. Check the altitude. Ask how high the tour goes and whether an authorized guide leads the upper part.
  4. Read the cancellation policy. Then keep a spare day in your plan.
  5. Decide on wine. If lunch at a winery matters more than the craters, book a wine tour instead.

Mount Etna tours: frequently asked questions

Do I need a guide to visit Mount Etna?

Not for the lower slopes and marked trails. Above a set altitude, usually from around 2,500 meters, local ordinances require an authorized alpine or volcanological guide, and the exact limits change with volcanic activity.

Is it better to visit Etna from Catania or Taormina?

In general, Catania is closer to the south side, Rifugio Sapienza and the cable car. Taormina, by contrast, suits tours on the north side and volcano-and-wine days.

How high does the Etna cable car go?

The Funivia dell’Etna runs from about 1,923 meters at Rifugio Sapienza to an upper station at 2,500 meters. From there, off-road vehicles and guides can continue higher within the limits in force.

Can eruptions cancel Mount Etna tours?

Yes. Volcanic activity and weather can close the upper zones or the cable car at short notice, so book with free cancellation and keep a spare day.

What should I wear for an Etna tour?

Closed hiking shoes, long pants and warm, windproof layers, even in summer. Also add sunglasses, sunscreen and water.
