Choosing where to stay in Milan depends on two things: your first booking and your trains. The main sights sit in compact areas, while day trips leave from Centrale, Garibaldi and Cadorna. So the right area saves you a lot of metro rides.

This guide compares the four areas most visitors choose, with the bookings and stations that shape each one. It also lists Milan’s city tax, which is higher than in Rome or Florence.

Where to stay in Milan by what you will book

  • Booking a Duomo rooftop tour? Stay around the Duomo and Brera and start early.
  • Booking a Last Supper tour? The Duomo area or Brera keeps Santa Maria delle Grazie a short metro ride away.
  • Planning a Lake Como day trip or Bergamo by train? Choose Centrale or Porta Garibaldi.
  • Flying out of Malpensa early? Centrale has direct trains to the airport.
  • Here for food and evenings? Book a Milan food tour and sleep near the Navigli.

Duomo and Brera

This is the classic first-timer base. The cathedral, the Galleria and La Scala are on foot, and Brera adds small streets and galleries. However, rooms here cost more than elsewhere in the city.

Porta Garibaldi and Isola

Around Piazza Gae Aulenti and the Bosco Verticale towers, Porta Nuova feels modern. Meanwhile, Isola next door has some of the city’s best bars. Also, Garibaldi station serves regional trains, which helps for day trips.

Centrale

The area around the main station is practical rather than pretty. Still, it is the easiest base for day trips and airport trains. According to Trenord, the airport train takes about 51 minutes from Milano Centrale to Terminal 1, at €15 one way (checked September 2026).

Navigli

The canal district around the Darsena comes alive in the late afternoon. As a result, it suits couples and anyone who wants an evening out on the doorstep. On the other hand, the bars stay busy late, so ask for a quiet room.

Getting around from your base

In practice, walk inside each area and take the metro between them. The ATM contactless page says you can tap a bank card at the turnstiles, with a single urban ride at €2.20 and a daily cap of €7.60 (checked September 2026). So any central base works, as long as it is near a metro stop.

Milan’s city tax

Milan charges a tourist tax per person, per night, collected at the property. For example, a 4-star hotel adds €10.00 per person per night, and children under 18 are exempt (checked September 2026 on the city’s official pages). Rates for every class are in our Italy tourist tax guide.

Where should I stay in Milan for day trips?

Near Centrale or Porta Garibaldi, where regional trains leave for Lake Como, Bergamo and other day trips.

How much is the city tax in Milan?

In September 2026, a 4-star hotel added €10.00 per person per night, with children under 18 exempt. Other classes are listed in our tourist tax guide.
