Milan to Lake Como: Trains, Boats, Buses and a 1 to 3 Day Plan (2026)
How to get from Milan to Lake Como: trains to Varenna and Como with 2026 times and fares, boats and buses to Bellagio, car or day tour, and a day-by-day plan.

Getting from Milan to Lake Como is easy. However, the right route depends on where on the lake you are going. Como town sits at the southern tip, while Bellagio, Varenna and Menaggio sit in the middle of the lake. This guide compares every realistic option, from trains to day tours. Then it gives a one-, two- and three-day plan.
The short answer: for Bellagio, Varenna or Menaggio, take the direct regional train from Milano Centrale to Varenna-Esino, about 64 minutes, then cross by boat. For Como town, take a train to Como San Giovanni, about 40 minutes. A car only helps if you plan to explore beyond the ferry towns. By contrast, a guided day tour suits first-timers with a single day. Either way, check the ferry timetable, because it changes on October 5 and again in November.

Milan to Lake Como at a glance
| Option | Route | Time and fare (checked September 2026) | Best for |

| Train to Varenna | Milano Centrale to Varenna-Esino, direct | About 64 minutes, 2nd class about €7.40 | Mid-lake stays, Bellagio and Menaggio by ferry |
| Train to Como town | Milano Centrale to Como San Giovanni, direct | About 40 minutes, from about €5.40 | Como town, the funicular to Brunate, the slow boat |
| Train to Como Lago | Milano Cadorna to Como, Trenord | About 60 minutes, about €5.40 | Arriving right on the Como waterfront |
| Train plus bus | Como, then bus C130 to Bellagio | Bus about 1 hour | Budget travelers when boats are few |

| Car or private transfer | Door to door | Depends on traffic and parking | Families, luggage, villas off the ferry lines |
| Guided day tour | Round trip from Milan | Set by the operator | First-timers with one day |
In fact, all three train fares come from Trenord, the regional rail operator in Lombardy. Then, for the boats, the public operator is Navigazione Laghi. For a wider view of the region, start with our Lombardy guide and our guide to trains in Italy.
Which way from Milan to Lake Como suits you
| If you are… | Choose | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A first-timer with one day | Train to Varenna, or a guided day tour | The fastest way to the prettiest stretch of the lake |
| Staying 2 to 3 nights | Train to Varenna, then ferry to your base | No car, no parking, and boats link the three towns |
| Traveling with kids or heavy bags | Private transfer | Door to door, with no changes |
| A return visitor | Car, or train to Como plus bus | Villages and viewpoints the ferries skip |
| Short on time in Milan | Train to Como town | About 40 minutes, so a half day works |
In practice, most visitors going from Milan to Lake Como for the first time want the central lake. So Varenna is usually the better rail gateway than Como town. However, Como town is the smart pick for a half day or a lakefront walk.
By train to Varenna: the fastest route to mid-lake
Direct regional trains run from Milano Centrale to Varenna-Esino on the line toward Lecco and the Valtellina. According to Trenord (checked September 2026), the trip takes about 64 minutes with no changes. There is roughly one train every hour. In addition, a 2nd-class ticket costs about €7.40.
Seats on these regional trains are not reserved, so you do not need to book days ahead. Also, sit on the left side of the train, facing forward, for the first lake views after Lecco. From Varenna station, then, walk downhill to the village and the ferry landing.
Crossing from Varenna to Bellagio and Menaggio
Together, Varenna, Bellagio and Menaggio face each other across the widest part of the lake. As a result, public boats and car ferries shuttle between them all day. For example, the Navigazione Laghi timetable page lists a ferry route linking Bellagio, Cadenabbia, Varenna and Menaggio (checked September 2026). Vehicles, however, travel only on runs marked for car ferries.
By train from Milan to Como town
For Como town, trains from Milano Centrale reach Como San Giovanni in about 40 minutes. Fares start from about €5.40 in 2nd class. That is according to the Trenord route page (checked September 2026). Since Como San Giovanni sits on the hill above the old town, allow a short downhill walk to the lake.
Como San Giovanni or Como Lago?
Alternatively, Trenord trains from Milano Cadorna end at Como Lago, right on the waterfront. The Cadorna route page gives about 60 minutes and about €5.40 (checked September 2026). So choose Cadorna if you are staying near the Castello Sforzesco, and Centrale if you are near the main station.
From Como to Bellagio by bus or boat
From Como town, you can continue to Bellagio by bus or by boat. First, the bus is line C130 of ASF Autolinee, according to its line page. The Bellagio tourist office says the ride takes more or less one hour (checked September 2026). The road is narrow and winding, however, so it is not ideal for anyone prone to motion sickness.
Next, public boats run from Como up the lake, stopping at many villages. Also, some departures are marked as a fast service, which costs a supplement according to the timetable legend. Check the times in the official PDF before you go, because boats are fewer outside summer.
Milan to Lake Como by car or private transfer
A car makes sense only if you want the villages and viewpoints the ferries do not reach. Otherwise, it slows you down. The lakeshore roads are narrow, and parking in the ferry towns is limited. Above all, Villa del Balbianello cannot be reached by car at all. That is according to the FAI visitor page (checked September 2026).
If you do drive, read our guides to driving in Italy and car rental in Italy. Meanwhile, a private transfer suits families and travelers with heavy bags. Still, agree on the pickup point, the drop-off and the total price in writing before you book.
Guided day tours from Milan to Lake Como
Instead of planning it yourself, you can let a guided day trip handle the train or coach, the boats and the timing for you. For one day, therefore, that is the least stressful option, especially in summer when boat lines are long. First, see our page on a Lake Como day trip from Milan. Then, if you would rather see the villas from the water, compare a Lake Como boat tour. For more options, our guide to Lake Como tours sets out the choices.
A day-by-day plan: 1, 2 or 3 days
The plans below assume the train to Varenna and public boats. Also, each day is paced for a relaxed visit, not a race.
Day 1: Milan to Lake Como by train, then Bellagio
Take a morning train from Milano Centrale to Varenna. Then walk the lakeside path and cross to Bellagio for lunch and the lanes of the old town. On a day trip, catch a boat back to Varenna and a train to Milan in the early evening. If you are staying, sleep in Varenna, the calmest base, or Bellagio, the liveliest.
Day 2: Menaggio and the western shore
Next, cross to Menaggio or Cadenabbia and visit the gardens of Villa Carlotta in Tremezzina. The Villa Carlotta site lists 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. until October 18, 2026, then 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. until November 8 (checked September 2026). Alternatively, book Villa del Balbianello, where booking is mandatory, and walk the path from Lenno.
Day 3: Como town and back to Milan
Finally, take the boat or the C130 bus south to Como town. After that, see the cathedral and the lakefront, then take a train back to Milan from Como San Giovanni or Como Lago. As a result, you see the whole lake without doubling back.
| Base | Feel | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Varenna | Quiet village with a train station | Travelers without a car |
| Bellagio | Busy, central, many restaurants | Couples and first-timers |
| Menaggio | Small town with a lakefront | Western-shore villas and walks |
| Como town | A real city with a historic center | Short trips and easy returns to Milan |
Seasonal notes for the lake
- Fall. The official timetable page shows the summer timetable ending on October 4, 2026 (checked September 2026). An autumn timetable then runs from October 5 to November 1. So expect fewer boats, and plan your last crossing first.
- Winter. Many villas and gardens close, and boats thin out. However, Como town and the trains work year-round.
- Spring. In 2026, for example, Villa Carlotta reopened on March 20, and the gardens bloom from April.
- Summer. The most boats and the biggest crowds. Therefore, take an early train and have lunch late.
Also, the operator posted a notice in August 2026 limiting loads on car ferries because of low water. So if you plan to drive onto a ferry, check the notices first. For the season overall, see our guides to Italy in fall and Italy in October.
What to book ahead
- Villa del Balbianello. Booking is mandatory, according to the FAI page.
- The Last Supper in Milan. Slots sell out, so see our guide to Last Supper tickets or a Last Supper tour in Milan.
- Your bed on the lake in summer. Varenna and Bellagio are small, so rooms go early.
- A private transfer or day tour. Book a few days ahead in high season.
