Lake Como Itinerary: 2, 3 or 4 Days by Boat, With Bases and Fall Schedules (2026)
A Lake Como itinerary for 2, 3 or 4 days without a car: where to stay, how the mid-lake ferries work, villas day by day, and 2026 fall schedules.

A good Lake Como itinerary is built around the boats, not the map. Bellagio, Varenna and Menaggio face each other across the middle of the lake. As a result, a short ferry ride links them all day. This guide gives a 2-, 3- and 4-day plan and the best base for each traveler. It also covers the fall schedules that change the plan after early October.
The short answer: three days is the sweet spot for a first Lake Como itinerary. Base yourself in Varenna if you arrive by train, or in Bellagio if you want restaurants on your doorstep. First, spend Day 1 on Bellagio and Villa Melzi. Then give Day 2 to the western shore, and Day 3 to Varenna and Villa Monastero. Finally, add a fourth day for Como town or Bergamo. In fall, check the boat timetable first, because it thins out on October 5.

Lake Como itinerary at a glance
| Trip length | Base | What you cover | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2 days | Varenna or Bellagio | Bellagio, Varenna, then one western-shore villa | A weekend, or also a stop between Milan and Venice |
| 3 days | Varenna, Bellagio or Menaggio | The mid-lake triangle, two villas, a lakeside walk | First-timers without a car |
| 4 days | Mid-lake, plus one night in Como town | All of the above, then Como, Brunate or Bergamo | Slow travelers and return visitors |
| Day trip | Milan | Varenna and Bellagio only | Travelers who are still short on time |
Getting to the lake is a separate question. So for trains and routes, start with our guide to getting from Milan to Lake Como, which compares every option. This page picks up once you arrive.
Where to base yourself on Lake Como
Above all, your base decides how much time you spend waiting for boats. In short, most first-timers should sleep on the central lake. That is because the ferries between Bellagio, Varenna and Menaggio run most often there.
| Base | Feel | Pros | Cons |
|---|---|---|---|
| Varenna | Small, quiet village on the east shore | Train station to Milan, calm evenings | Few hotels, so it fills up early in summer |
| Bellagio | Busy tip of the peninsula | Most restaurants and boat links | However, crowded by day in high season |
| Menaggio | Small town on the west shore | Also close to Villa Carlotta and the Greenway | No train station |
| Como town | A real city at the southern tip | Year-round life, fast trains to Milan | Far from the mid-lake villages |
For example, a couple without a car usually does best in Varenna or Bellagio. By contrast, walkers often prefer Menaggio for the western-shore paths. Como town, meanwhile, works well as the last night of a Lake Como itinerary. After all, it puts you close to the trains home.
How the boats work: the mid-lake triangle
The public boats on the lake are run by Navigazione Laghi, the state-owned operator. According to its official timetable page (checked September 2026), a ferry route links Bellagio, Cadenabbia, Varenna and Menaggio. Longer ship and fast services also run from Como up the lake to Colico. In addition, only runs marked as car ferries carry vehicles.
- Plan the last boat first. Especially in fall, it is the one that decides your day.
- Fast boats cost more. The timetable marks the fast service, which carries a supplement.
- Check the notices. In August 2026, for instance, the operator limited loads on car ferries because of low water.
Every Lake Como itinerary below uses these boats. So once you know the triangle, the plan almost writes itself. Alternatively, see our page on a Lake Como boat tour, which follows the shoreline.
2-day Lake Como itinerary
Day 1: Varenna, then Bellagio and Villa Melzi
First, arrive in Varenna by mid-morning and walk the lakeside path into the village. Then cross to Bellagio by ferry for lunch and the stepped lanes of the old town. Later, in the afternoon, walk south along the shore to the gardens of Villa Melzi. The Bellagio tourist office lists them as open from late March to the end of October, 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. (checked September 2026).
Day 2: Villa Carlotta and Menaggio
Next, take the ferry to Cadenabbia and walk a few minutes to Villa Carlotta. It is famous for its gardens and sculpture collection. After that, continue by boat to Menaggio for lunch on the waterfront. Finally, head back to your base. Otherwise, catch the train at Varenna if the lake is only one stop on a longer trip.
Arriving from Milan for one day instead? In that case, our page on a Lake Como day trip from Milan covers the guided version. Then transport and boats are handled for you.
3-day Lake Como itinerary for first-timers
This is the version most travelers should choose. It keeps Days 1 and 2 above. Then it adds a slower day with a garden, a viewpoint and time on the water.
Day 1: Bellagio and Villa Melzi
Follow the same plan as the 2-day version. Then have dinner in Bellagio. However, if you sleep in Varenna, check that a late boat still runs.
Day 2: The western shore and Villa del Balbianello
Start at Villa Carlotta in Tremezzina. According to the Villa Carlotta site, it opens 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. until October 18, 2026, then 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. until November 8 (checked September 2026). Then walk part of the Greenway south toward Lenno for Villa del Balbianello.
Booking for Villa del Balbianello is mandatory, according to the FAI visitor page (checked September 2026). Also, the villa cannot be reached by car. Instead, walk about 1 km uphill from Lenno, roughly 25 minutes. Alternatively, take a paid taxi boat from the Lido di Lenno.
Day 3: Varenna, Villa Monastero and a boat trip
Finally, stay on the east shore. First, visit Villa Monastero and its long lakeside garden in Varenna. The official site lists daily opening in October from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., closed on Tuesdays (checked September 2026). In the afternoon, climb to the viewpoints above the village, or book a boat tour for the villas you missed.
As a result, this three-day Lake Como itinerary covers the best-known villas without a car or a single long transfer.
4-day Lake Como itinerary with Como town or Bergamo
Day 4, option A: Como town and Brunate
First, take a boat south to Como town, then see the cathedral and the lakefront. Next, ride the funicular up to Brunate for the view over the lake. According to ATM, the operator, the ride takes 7 minutes, and it runs from 6:00 a.m. to midnight (checked September 2026). Sleep in Como, and you are about 40 minutes by train from Milan the next morning.
Day 4, option B: Bergamo or Lake Maggiore
Alternatively, trade the boats for a hill town. Bergamo sits east of the lake, and our Bergamo tour comparison sets two guided options side by side. Or, for a second lake, see our Lake Maggiore tour comparison and our guide to the Borromean Islands.

Which Lake Como itinerary fits you
| If you are… | Choose | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A first-timer without a car | 3 days, based in Varenna or Bellagio | Because ferries link every stop |
| On a tight schedule | 2 days, or a day trip from Milan | Since the central lake is compact |
| A keen walker | 3 or 4 days, based in Menaggio | The Greenway starts nearby |
| Traveling with a car | 4 days, park once and use the boats | Parking in the villages is limited |
| A return visitor | 4 days with Como town or Bergamo | Also new ground beyond the triangle |
Overall, a car rarely helps on this trip. In fact, the lakeshore roads are narrow, and the best villas sit right on the ferry lines. If you drive anyway, read our guide to driving in Italy before you go.
Walking the Greenway on the western shore
The Greenway del Lago di Como is an easy walking route from Colonno to Griante. According to Lombardy’s official tourism site, it is about 10 km long (checked September 2026). In addition, it takes about 3 hours and 30 minutes. Along the way, it passes Sala Comacina, Ossuccio, Lenno, Tremezzo and Cadenabbia.
Still, you do not need to walk all of it. For example, the stretch between Lenno and Cadenabbia fits neatly into Day 2 between the two villas. Then the ferry brings you back to your base.
A Lake Como itinerary in fall and winter
- Boats. The Navigazione Laghi page shows the summer timetable ending on October 4, 2026. An autumn timetable then runs from October 5 to November 1 (checked September 2026). Expect fewer departures, and check the winter timetable before any trip after that.
- Villas. Villa Melzi closes at the end of October. Then Villa Carlotta keeps weekend hours in November. Meanwhile, Villa Monastero closes on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from November, according to its official page.
- Light. Days are shorter, so start early and keep lunches long.
- Crowds. On the upside, fall brings quieter lanes in Bellagio and Varenna.
So a fall Lake Como itinerary still works well, as long as you plan around the last boat. For the wider season, see our guides to Italy in fall, Italy in October and Italy in November.
What to book ahead
- Villa del Balbianello. Booking is mandatory, according to FAI.
- Your room in Varenna or Bellagio. Both villages are small, so rooms go early.
- The Last Supper in Milan, if you pass through. Slots sell out, so see our guide to Last Supper tickets or a Last Supper tour in Milan.
- A private boat or guided tour in summer, a few days ahead.
