Rome or Milan? Start where Italy makes sense.

Two international gateways, two very different opening chapters. Choose your arrival airport around the places you actually want to explore.

In a hurry? Fly into Rome when your first stops are the Eternal City, the Vatican, Lazio or much of central and southern Italy. Choose Milan for Milan, Lake Como and many northern itineraries. If you’re visiting both and finishing far from where you started, compare a multi-city ticket. And remember: the lowest airfare is not necessarily the lowest total travel cost.

Deciding Rome vs Milan: where should you fly? is not simply a question of which city has the cheapest flight. Rome Fiumicino (FCO) and Milan Malpensa (MXP) are major international gateways, but they lead to different travel experiences. The ideal arrival airport depends on your first hotel, onward train journeys, trip length and departure plans.

Which itinerary?

When is Rome the better airport?

Rome is often the stronger choice when your itinerary starts with the Colosseum, Vatican Museums, Roman Forum or Lazio countryside. The capital makes a logical first base if you plan to continue south to Naples or build a route through central Italy. It can also work well for Florence-first itineraries when your chosen international flight is significantly more convenient, although you’d need to add train travel.

Choose Rome first if: you are spending several nights in Rome; the Vatican and archaeological sights are a priority; you are combining Rome and Naples; or you want to begin with a classic central Italy itinerary.

Our three-day Rome itinerary and Fiumicino Airport to Rome guide help with the next steps.

Arriving at Fiumicino

Trenitalia’s Leonardo Express links Fiumicino Aeroporto and Roma Termini in 32 minutes without intermediate stops. The published standard fare is €14 at the time of review; confirm prices and schedules before traveling. Official Trenitalia information ↗.

The northern gateway

When is Milan the better airport?

Milan is a natural choice for an itinerary focused on the Duomo, Brera, the Navigli area, Lake Como, and wider northern Italy. It can reduce initial backtracking when your trip is concentrated in Lombardy and northern regions. For a multi-stop rail vacation, Milan can be an excellent first or last city.

Choose Milan first if: you’re spending time in Milan, traveling toward Lake Como, visiting northern destinations or finishing a trip in the north.

Arriving at Malpensa

Trenord reports that the Malpensa Express connects the airport with Milano Centrale in about 51 minutes and Milano Cadorna in around 37 minutes. The published standard one-way Milan–Malpensa fare is €15 at the time of review. Confirm terminal stops, operating hours and price on the official Trenord Malpensa Express page ↗.

Watch the Milan airport code. Malpensa (MXP), Linate (LIN) and Bergamo (BGY) are different airports. A lower airfare to BGY does not automatically mean a cheaper or easier journey to your Milan hotel.
A smarter booking strategy

What if your trip includes both Rome and Milan?

Don’t assume you need to return to your arrival city. With a multi-city or open-jaw ticket, you might fly into Rome and out of Milan (or do the reverse), visit intermediate cities by train, and avoid paying for an unnecessary return leg. Whether this saves money depends on the airfare difference, rail costs and travel dates.

1. Map your stops

Put destinations in travel order before looking at fares.

2. Compare full costs

Check open-jaw and round-trip fares alongside transfer costs.

3. Protect your time

Build in enough time for the journey to your final departure airport.
