Fiumicino to Rome: Train, Bus, Taxi or Transfer, With Official Fares (2026)
Every way from Fiumicino to Rome: the Leonardo Express, the FL1 train, airport buses, the fixed taxi fare, private transfers, and a short Ciampino guide.

Getting from Fiumicino to Rome is easy once you know which station, stop or taxi rank fits your hotel. The airport lies west of the city. It also has its own train station, a short walk from arrivals. This guide compares every realistic option, with official fares and fall 2026 timetables.
The short answer: for most travelers, the Leonardo Express train is the simplest way from Fiumicino to Rome. Also, it runs non-stop to Termini in 32 minutes for €14 (checked September 2026). If your hotel is in Trastevere or near Ostiense, the FL1 regional train is often closer. With kids or heavy bags, however, take a white licensed taxi. It costs a fixed €55 to anywhere inside the Aurelian Walls. Buses, by contrast, are cheapest but slower in traffic.

| Licensed taxi | Door to door inside the Aurelian Walls | Fixed €55 per car, supplements included | Trunk space for most families | Families, groups of 3 to 4, heavy bags |
| Private transfer | Door to door, anywhere | Set by the company, so agree it in writing | Agreed at booking | Meet-and-greet, large groups, late arrivals |
In short, the train wins for speed, the taxi wins for comfort, and the bus wins on price. However, the right answer depends mostly on where you sleep. So pick a base first. Our 3 days in Rome itinerary groups the city by neighborhood.
Which way from Fiumicino to Rome suits you
Choose the Leonardo Express if your hotel is near Termini or a metro stop. It also suits light packers who land before late evening.
Choose the FL1 train if you are staying in Trastevere, Testaccio or near Ostiense. It also reaches Tiburtina for high-speed trains north.
Choose a taxi if you are two or more people with luggage, or you land after a long overnight flight. In fact, four Leonardo Express tickets cost €56 at full price, about the same as the €55 taxi fare from Fiumicino to Rome.
Choose a bus if, above all, cost matters most and you do not mind traffic. Also consider the Cotral night bus when your flight lands after the last train.
Choose a private transfer if you want a driver waiting in arrivals. It also suits families who need a child seat.
Leonardo Express: the non-stop train from Fiumicino to Rome Termini
First, follow the train signs from arrivals to the airport station. According to Trenitalia (checked September 2026), the single fare is €14. Then the ride to Termini takes 32 minutes with no stops. In addition, a mini-group offer sells four tickets in one purchase for €40 instead of €56.
The Leonardo Express timetable, valid from June 14 to December 12, 2026, lists up to 138 trains a day (checked September 2026). Trains run every day of the year. Trains run every 15 minutes at the busiest times and every 30 minutes otherwise. The first train from Termini leaves at 4:50, and the last train from the airport leaves at 23:53.
Tickets, kids and contactless
- Where to buy. The Trenitalia ticket office at the airport opens daily from 6:45 to 22:12, according to Trenitalia (checked September 2026). Otherwise, use the self-service machines. You can also buy in the Trenitalia app.
- Kids. Children under 4 travel free. Also, one child aged 4 to 12 rides free with each paying adult.
- Tap and go. Trenitalia’s Tap&Tap lets you pay with a contactless card. On the Leonardo Express, you tap in but do not need to tap out, according to the Tap&Tap rules (checked September 2026).
Finally, at Termini you arrive at the main station, where metro lines A and B cross. So from there, most central hotels are one metro ride, a short taxi ride or a walk away.
FL1 regional train: better for Trastevere and Ostiense
The FL1 is a regional commuter line that runs from the airport across the city. However, it does not stop at Termini. Instead, it calls at stations such as Roma Trastevere, Roma Ostiense and Roma Tiburtina. According to Trenitalia (checked September 2026), trains depart every 15 minutes on working days. On Sundays and public holidays, they run every 30 minutes, and the ride to Tiburtina takes 48 minutes.
As a result, the FL1 is often the smarter pick from Fiumicino to Rome for hotels south or west of the center. For example, Trastevere station is a short tram ride from the neighborhood. Similarly, Ostiense connects to metro line B at Piramide. The FL1 uses a regional ticket, so check the fare in the Trenitalia app before you board. Children under 12 traveling with a paying adult ride free, according to the same Trenitalia page.
Meanwhile, keep in mind that the FL1 is a commuter train. It can be crowded at rush hour, and it has no dedicated luggage racks for big cases.
High-speed trains straight from the airport
You do not always need to go into Rome at all. In fact, Trenitalia says Frecciarossa trains link the airport directly with Florence, Bologna, Padua and Venice (checked September 2026). Naples joined the list in summer 2026. So if Rome is not your first stop, see our guides to the Rome to Florence train and trains in Italy before you book.
Airport buses from Fiumicino to Rome
Several private companies run coaches from Fiumicino to Rome. According to Aeroporti di Roma, the airport operator (checked September 2026), the main ones are:
- Terravision: to Termini. Its official page lists fares from about €4 online and departures about every 20 minutes (checked September 2026). The ride takes about 45 minutes. It also says there is no limit on luggage.
- SIT Bus Shuttle: to the Vatican area, Aurelia and Termini.
- T.A.M. Bus: to Ostiense and Termini.
- Rome Airport Bus (Schiaffini): to Termini.
- Cotral: to metro stations, plus a night service to Termini and Tiburtina.
Bus fares change often, so check the operator’s site before you travel. Also, road traffic into Rome can add a lot of time at rush hour. Therefore, if you have a timed entry that afternoon, such as the Colosseum, the train is the safer choice.
Arriving late at night
After the last train, Cotral runs a night service between the airport and the Termini and Tiburtina stations. According to Cotral (checked September 2026), the dedicated Air Terminal ticket costs €5 in the app or €7 on board. Note that a standard Rome BIT transit ticket does not cover this route. Alternatively, a taxi at the fixed fare is the easier choice after a long flight.

Taxi from Fiumicino to Rome: the fixed fare
Rome sets a fixed taxi fare from the airport to the center. According to Roma Servizi per la Mobilità, the city’s transport agency (checked September 2026), the fixed fare from Fiumicino to Rome is €55 per car to anywhere inside the Aurelian Walls. Supplements are included. The fixed price applies only to direct trips without detours or extra stops.
In practice, the Aurelian Walls ring the historic center, including the Colosseum, Pantheon, Trevi Fountain and Termini areas. However, some popular areas sit outside them, such as Prati near the Vatican. So check your hotel address on a map, and then confirm the fare with the driver.
How to find an official taxi
- Use the rank. Taxis wait at the arrivals level of Terminals 1 and 3, according to Aeroporti di Roma (checked September 2026).
- Look for white cars. Licensed Rome taxis are white, with a TAXI sign on the roof. The license number is on the doors.
- Ignore touts. The airport warns that other drivers offering rides in the arrivals hall may not be licensed and may charge more.
- Going back to the airport? The same fixed €55 applies from inside the walls. From elsewhere inside the ring road (GRA), the fare to Fiumicino cannot exceed €80, according to the city agency.
Tipping is optional on a fixed fare. For more, see our guide to tipping in Italy.
Private transfer or car rental
A private transfer is the most comfortable way from Fiumicino to Rome, especially for families and groups. The driver meets you in arrivals and takes you to the door, as far as traffic rules allow. There is no official fare for this service. So agree the price, pickup time and luggage allowance in writing. Arriving by cruise ship instead? See our guide to getting from Civitavecchia to Rome.
Renting a car at the airport makes sense only if you are heading straight out to the countryside. In fact, much of central Rome is a limited traffic zone, and parking is hard to find. So if you do rent, read our guides to driving in Italy and car rental in Italy first.
From Ciampino instead: getting into Rome
Meanwhile, Ciampino is Rome’s smaller airport, southeast of the city, and it is mostly used by low-cost airlines. Unlike Fiumicino, it has no rail station at the terminal. Instead, you choose between a bus, a bus plus metro, and a taxi.
- Taxi: the fixed fare to inside the Aurelian Walls is €40 per car, according to the city transport agency (checked September 2026).
- Direct bus to Termini: SIT, Terravision and Rome Airport Bus (Schiaffini) run to Termini, according to Aeroporti di Roma. Terravision lists fares from about €6.50 on its Ciampino page (checked September 2026).
- Bus plus metro: ATAC city bus 720 runs to Laurentina on metro line B. Also, bus 520 serves Cinecittà and Subaugusta on line A, while ATRAL buses run to Ciampino railway station.
All the Ciampino bus stops are opposite International Departures, according to the airport operator. In short, the taxi suits two or more people. By contrast, the direct bus to Termini is the budget pick.
Your first afternoon in Rome
Once you have checked in, keep the first day light. For example, an evening walk on a Rome night tour shows the lit-up fountains and piazzas without much effort. Alternatively, a Trastevere food tour is a gentle start. It works well if you came in on the FL1. To compare the options first, see our guide to the best food tours in Rome.
If you land early, you could even stop on the way. Ostia Antica, the ancient port of Rome, lies between the airport and the city. Our page on an Ostia Antica tour from Rome covers guided visits. Before you pay for your hotel, also check the city tax in our guide to the Italy tourist tax.
