From the Naples cruise port, Pompeii is 38 minutes from Napoli Porta Nolana station on the fastest Circumvesuviana trains, and Sorrento about 1 hour 15 minutes. Capri is a 50-minute fast ferry ride. Here is how each trip works on your own, what it costs this fall and what we couldn’t confirm.

Last updated: October 21, 2026. We checked the information below on the official pages of EAV (Circumvesuviana), UnicoCampania, the Pompeii Archaeological Park, SNAV, Trenitalia and the Italian Ministry of Transport on that date.

Where cruise ships dock in Naples

The Naples cruise terminal is the Stazione Marittima, in the city center. However, we couldn’t confirm the pier names, walking distances or a port shuttle on an official source, so check your ship’s port guide on the day. Then plan the walk or taxi to Napoli Porta Nolana, the Circumvesuviana station we used for the times below.

Naples cruise port to Pompeii by Circumvesuviana

The Circumvesuviana is the EAV railway around the bay. For the ruins, get off at Pompei Scavi Villa dei Misteri, which serves the Porta Marina and Piazza Esedra entrances, according to the archaeological park. On our sample day, October 28, 2026, Direttissimo trains left Porta Nolana at 8:30, 9:00 and 9:30 am and took 38 minutes. The EAV planner showed only these trains, so we couldn’t confirm how often the other trains on the line run. EAV also introduced a new timetable on October 17, 2026.

As for the fare, a single ticket costs about €3.30 on EAV trains (UnicoCampania’s fare finder, checked October 2026). It’s good for one ride only, so you’ll need another for the way back, and you validate it when you start your trip. You can buy it in the GoEav app, at the ticket office or by tapping a contactless card at the enabled gates.

Alternatively, Trenitalia regional trains run from Napoli Centrale to the separate Pompei station on the Naples–Salerno line. They took 42 minutes and cost €3.50 on our sample day. However, we couldn’t confirm the walking distance from that station to the entrances.

Pompeii hours and tickets this fall

In fall and winter, from October 15 to March 15, the site opens from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, and the last entry is at 3:30 pm. So aim to leave the ship early and be on a train by about 9:30 am. Tickets carry your name. Pompeii Express costs €20 for the ancient city, and Pompeii+ costs €25 and adds the Villa of the Mysteries and other suburban villas. Buy online only on Vivaticket, the official reseller, or at the site. Also, bags larger than 30 x 30 x 15 cm (about 12 x 12 x 6 inches) aren’t allowed, so leave bigger daypacks on the ship.

For more detail, read our guide to Pompeii tickets.

Sorrento by train

The same Circumvesuviana line continues to Sorrento. Direttissimo trains took about 1 hour 15 minutes on our sample day, and a ticket costs €4.60 on EAV. For the return, Direttissimo trains left Sorrento at 3:30, 4:00 and 4:30 pm and reached Porta Nolana at 4:45, 5:15 and 5:45 pm. Add the trip from Porta Nolana to the port, and the 4:30 pm train is too late for a 6:00 pm all-aboard. So Sorrento only suits a long port day. Pompeii and Sorrento on the same day is possible only with a long call.

Capri by ferry

SNAV runs fast ferries from Molo Beverello to Capri all year, taking about 50 minutes. Its winter timetable starts on November 4, 2026, and every departure applies only on certain dates, so check yours. SNAV doesn’t list fares on that page, and the timetable for the rest of October 2026 wasn’t published there when we checked. Capri also charges a landing fee: ferry operator Alilauro lists it at €5 from April 1 to October 31 and €2.50 from November 1 to March 31. However, parts of that page were out of date, so check it when you book.

Return boats are few in the afternoon and depend on the sea, so Capri is a risky DIY choice on a short call. For the same reason, combining Capri and Pompeii on your own isn’t realistic.

The Amalfi Coast from the cruise port

Unfortunately, we couldn’t confirm a simple public route from Naples to Positano or Amalfi and back within a port day. For the Amalfi Coast, a guided excursion is the sensible choice.

Check for strikes before your port day

As of October 21, 2026, the Ministry of Transport’s strike calendar lists national rail strikes from 9 pm on October 29 to 8:59 pm on October 30, from 9 pm on November 20 to 8 pm on November 21 and from 9 pm on December 3 to 9 pm on December 4, 2026. It also lists a nationwide general strike across all sectors on November 20. Locally, there’s a strike at EAV, which runs the Circumvesuviana, on November 21, and one at ANM, the Naples city transport company, from 11 am to 3 pm on November 16. The October 30 action also includes a 24-hour port strike, and we couldn’t confirm how it affects cruise calls, so ask your cruise line. Then check the calendar again the week before your call.

DIY or a shore excursion?

Going on your own is cheap, but the ship won’t wait if a train or ferry runs late, and any cost of catching up with it is yours. Before you book any tour, check its terms on getting you back to the ship.

Plan the rest of your trip

If you’re adding nights before or after your cruise, compare hotels in Naples on Expedia or hotels in Sorrento on Expedia, and check the Naples tourist tax. For your days in town, see our Naples itinerary, our guide to things to do in Sorrento and our Capri tours. For the cruise itself, our cruises from Italy guide covers ports and routes.

Sources and verification

On October 21, 2026, we checked EAV’s timetable, planner and ticket pages, UnicoCampania’s fare finder, the Pompeii Archaeological Park’s pages on hours, tickets and access, SNAV’s routes and timetables, Alilauro’s route page, Trenitalia’s journey planner for October 28, 2026, and the Ministry of Transport’s strike calendar. We couldn’t read the Naples port authority’s pages, so we don’t give pier names or walking times.
