From the La Spezia cruise port, the Cinque Terre are a short train ride away: Riomaggiore takes about 8 minutes and Monterosso about 25. You can also go by ferry when the sea allows. Below we explain where ships dock, which ticket to buy, the ferry times this fall and the dates when the railway closes.

Last updated: October 21, 2026. We checked the information below on the official pages of the port authority, the cruise terminal, the Cinque Terre National Park, the ferry company and Trenitalia on that date.

Where ships dock at the La Spezia cruise port

According to the port authority, cruise ships berth on the west side of the Molo Garibaldi pier, which offers 630 meters of quay. The cruise terminal is at Largo Fiorillo, and the operator is Spezia & Carrara Cruise Terminal (SCCT). The port authority describes this as the cruise berth in use while it waits for a new cruise pier at Calata Paita.

The terminal operator only mentions transport inside the port area, and neither it nor the port authority states the walking distance to La Spezia Centrale station. So ask your ship how to get from the La Spezia cruise port to the station, and allow extra time on the way back. Inside the port area, SCCT says collective or dedicated transport with ramps is available.

La Spezia cruise port to the Cinque Terre by train

Regional trains link La Spezia Centrale with the five villages. On our sample day, October 28, 2026, Riomaggiore was 6 to 8 minutes away and Monterosso 21 to 29 minutes, with trains about every 30 minutes. A single ride cost €5, as Trenitalia’s journey planner showed.

If you plan several stops, the Cinque Terre Train Card may be better value. It covers unlimited regional second-class trains between La Spezia, the Cinque Terre and Levanto for the day, plus the Sentiero Verde Azzurro trail between Monterosso, Vernazza and Corniglia and park services such as village buses and station restrooms. The Via dell’Amore path is included too, but you must book it.

Cinque Terre Train Card prices for fall 2026

The national park sets the prices by date. From November 2 to December 31, 2026, there’s one price: €17.30 for adults for one day, €11 for children aged 4 to 11 and €13.70 for people over 70. Until November 1, adult one-day prices are €22, €29.50 or €35, depending on the expected crowds that day. Children under 4 travel free with an adult who holds a card. A family card for two adults and one or more children aged 4 to 11 costs €43.70 for one day from November 2, and €56.50, €77 or €91.50 until November 1.

The card carries your name, so carry an ID. It’s valid until midnight of its last day, and you can buy it at park info points in the stations or online. It isn’t refundable, except for an orange or red weather alert, force majeure or a train strike. Note that the park hasn’t published 2027 prices yet, and online sales currently run only to December 2026.

Planned railway closures

The national park has announced that trains will not run between Corniglia and La Spezia for 48 hours on four weekends: November 14–15 and December 19–20, 2026, and January 9–10 and February 6–7, 2027. Corniglia is the third village from La Spezia. So on those days, trains from La Spezia can’t take you to any of the five villages. If your port day falls on one of these dates, check Trenitalia’s updates before you set out.

Ferries from the La Spezia waterfront

The ferry company Consorzio Marittimo Turistico Cinque Terre – Golfo dei Poeti sails from Passeggiata Morin, on the La Spezia seafront. Its Line 02 calls at Portovenere, Riomaggiore, Manarola, Vernazza and Monterosso, but not Corniglia, and runs from March 1 to December 8.

From October 19 to November 1, 2026, boats leave La Spezia at 9:15, 10:15 and 11:15 am. The useful returns leave Monterosso at 3:25 and 4:25 pm and reach La Spezia at 5:20 and 6:20 pm. The operator’s current fare sheet lists a day ticket at €42 for adults and €15 for children aged 6 to 11. It shows no year, though, so check before you buy. One-way tickets from La Spezia cost €22 to Riomaggiore or Manarola and €30 to Vernazza or Monterosso. However, a 5:20 pm arrival leaves almost no margin for a 6:00 pm all-aboard, and 6:20 pm is too late, so plan to come back by train. You can buy tickets online until the day before, or at the ticket offices in La Spezia and the villages. From November 2 to December 8, the company runs a reduced service.

Portovenere is also an easy trip: the ferry takes 45 minutes and costs €15 return. Until November 1, boats back leave Portovenere at 4:50 pm, arriving in La Spezia at 5:20 pm, and at 5:50 pm, arriving at 6:20 pm. So the later boat is no use with a 6:00 pm all-aboard. Also, weather can cancel any sailing: on October 21, 2026, the company suspended Line 02 because of sea conditions, so check its notice on the morning of your port day.

Check for strikes before your port day

As of October 21, 2026, the Ministry of Transport’s strike calendar lists national rail strikes from 9 pm on October 29 to 8:59 pm on October 30, from 9 pm on November 20 to 8 pm on November 21, and from 9 pm on December 3 to 9 pm on December 4, 2026. The October 30 action also includes a 24-hour port strike. It also lists a nationwide general strike across all sectors for the whole day of November 20. We couldn’t confirm how the October 30 port strike affects cruise calls, so ask your cruise line. If a train strike hits your day, the Train Card is refundable.

DIY or a shore excursion?

On your own, the train makes the Cinque Terre a straightforward DIY day, with the first village just minutes from La Spezia Centrale. Even so, the ship won’t wait if you’re late, and any cost of catching up with it is yours. Before you book any tour, check its terms on getting you back to the ship.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get from La Spezia cruise port to the Cinque Terre?

Take a regional train from La Spezia Centrale: Riomaggiore is about 8 minutes away and Monterosso about 25. A single ride costs €5, or you can buy a Cinque Terre Train Card for unlimited rides that day.

Is the Cinque Terre Train Card worth it for a cruise day?

Only if you ride a lot. At the €5 single fare we saw in October 2026, four rides cost €20, so the €17.30 adult card (November 2 to December 31, 2026) pays off from four rides. Until November 1, the adult card costs €22, €29.50 or €35 depending on the day, so you’d need five to seven rides.

How far is La Spezia cruise terminal from the train station?

Neither the port authority nor the terminal operator states the distance. Ask your ship how to reach La Spezia Centrale, and allow extra time on the way back.

Can I take the ferry from La Spezia to Portovenere and the Cinque Terre?

Yes, from Passeggiata Morin, when the sea allows. Portovenere takes 45 minutes and costs €15 return, and a Cinque Terre day ticket costs €42. Until November 1, the last useful boats reach La Spezia at 5:20 and 6:20 pm, which is too late for many all-aboard times, so plan to return by train.

How much is the train from La Spezia to Riomaggiore?

A single regional train ride from La Spezia Centrale to Riomaggiore cost €5 when we checked in October 2026.
