The Vipiteno Christmas market (Sterzinger Weihnachtsmarkt) sets about 40 stalls in Piazza Città, right under the Zwölferturm, the medieval tower that splits the old town in two. It runs from November 27, 2026 to January 6, 2027, and it is the closest of South Tyrol’s official markets to the Austrian border: 18 minutes by train from the Brenner Pass.

This guide covers the 2026 dates, what makes the market different, how to get there by train and where to stay in Sterzing.

Opening hours

When we checked in October 2026, the Sterzing tourist board had not yet published official hours for the 2026-27 season. A regional events site lists the market as open daily from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., closing at 1 p.m. on December 24, with only some stalls open on December 25. These are not official times, so confirm them with the Sterzing tourist office (+39 0472 765 325) before you travel.

What makes the Vipiteno market different

Bells set the theme here. For example, the carillon on the Zwölferturm has 25 bells, cast by the Grassmayr foundry of Innsbruck and installed in 2020, and its two daily concerts draw a crowd to the square. In past seasons the tower also hosted a nativity museum, and a living Advent calendar opened a window every day at 5 p.m. The tourist board had not confirmed either for 2026 when we checked.

The market is a Green Event recognized by KlimaLand South Tyrol. In the 2025-26 season the Krampus and St. Nicholas parade ran on December 5 at 6 p.m., but the 2026 date was not confirmed when we checked. At the food stalls, also look for goulash soup and Strauben, a funnel cake dusted with sugar.

How to get to the Vipiteno Christmas market by train

Vipiteno/Sterzing station lies on the Brenner line, so the historic center is only about a five-minute walk away. The platforms are reached only through an underpass. There is no step-free access, so plan ahead with a stroller or a wheelchair.

  • From Bolzano: about 1 hour, with trains roughly every half hour.
  • From the Brenner Pass: about 18 minutes.
  • From Innsbruck: about 1 hour to 1 hour 20 minutes, usually with a change at the Brenner Pass.

Journey times come from rail booking sites and unofficial timetable summaries, not from Trenitalia or ÖBB. The timetable changes in mid-December, so confirm your connection on Trenitalia before you travel.

A guided Christmas markets day from Bolzano

Vipiteno is small enough to see in a couple of hours. As a result, many visitors combine it with other markets in one day.

Where to stay in Vipiteno

The old town is compact, and sleeping there lets you see the square after the day-trippers leave. One central option listed on Expedia is Hotel Restaurant Lilie, at Neustadt 49 on the main street of the old town.

Combine Vipiteno with other Christmas markets

Vipiteno sits at the northern end of the South Tyrol rail route. For example, head south to the Bressanone Christmas market and then to the Bolzano Christmas market, or continue to the Merano Christmas market. Our guide to Christmas markets in Italy lists dates for every city, and Italy in December covers weather and crowds.
