Bressanone Christmas Market 2026: Dates, Hours and Light Show
Bressanone Christmas market 2026/27: official dates and hours in Piazza Duomo, the light show at the Hofburg, trains on the Brenner line and hotels.

The Bressanone Christmas market (Brixner Weihnachtsmarkt) fills Piazza Duomo, the cathedral square of the old bishops’ town, from late November 2026 to January 6, 2027. It is smaller and calmer than the market in Bolzano, 30 minutes away by train, and 2026 is its 35th season: Bressanone and Bolzano opened Italy’s first South Tyrolean markets together in 1991.
Last updated: October 20, 2026
This guide covers the 2026 dates and opening hours, what to see around the square, how to get there by train and where to stay in Brixen.
Bressanone Christmas market 2026 at a glance
- Dates: November 27, 2026 to January 6, 2027, according to the Brixen tourist board. South Tyrol’s official event calendar lists the opening evening at 5 p.m. on Thursday, November 26.
- Closed: December 25, so plan Christmas Day elsewhere.
- Where: Piazza Duomo (Domplatz), in front of the cathedral’s twin towers.
- Size: 44 wooden huts with 28 exhibitors selling regional food, crafts and decorations.
- Getting there: every train on the Brenner line stops at Bressanone, and the old town is a few minutes’ walk from the station.
- Extra: a light and music show at the Hofburg, the former bishops’ palace, from November 26, 2026 to January 9, 2027.
Opening hours of the Bressanone Christmas market
Because the craft stalls and the food stalls keep different hours, check both lines below. These are the 2026-27 times published for the market (checked October 2026):
- Craft stalls: Monday to Thursday 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Friday to Sunday and holidays 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
- Food and drink stalls: Monday to Thursday 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Friday to Sunday and holidays 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.
- December 24 and 31: craft stalls 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; food stalls close at 5:30 p.m. On New Year’s Eve the food stalls reopen from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m.
- January 1: noon to 7 p.m. (food until 9 p.m.).
- January 6, the last day: 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. On December 5, 12, 19 and 23 the food stalls also stay open until 10 p.m.
The South Tyrol tourist board notes that a few special days may change, so check the times again in late November if your visit falls on a holiday.
What to see at the market in Piazza Duomo
The huts line up in front of the baroque cathedral, so the whole market fits in one square. The 2026 edition runs under the theme “hope” and holds Green Event certification, which in South Tyrol covers local products, waste reduction and travel by public transport.
Plan to stay into the evening, because from November 26, 2026 to January 9, 2027, “Oops 2 – A Light and Music Show for UNICEF” runs at the Hofburg, with a listed time of 5:30 to 6 p.m. The show is ticketed, and 1 euro from every ticket goes to a UNICEF water program in Zambia. We could not find the 2026 ticket price or how many shows run each evening, so ask the Brixen tourist office before you go.

Regional guides list South Tyrolean classics such as goulash soup, barley soup, Tirtlan (fried filled pastries), apple fritters and mulled wine. We have not found an official list of 2026 dishes or a confirmed mug deposit, so we do not quote one.
How to get to the Bressanone Christmas market by train
Bressanone (Brixen) sits on the Brenner railway between Verona, Bolzano and Innsbruck, and the tourist board confirms that all trains on the line stop here. From the station you reach the old town on foot in a few minutes.
- From Bolzano: about 30 minutes, with trains roughly every half hour.
- From Verona: about 2 hours to 2 hours 15 minutes.
- From Innsbruck: about 1 hour 25 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes.
These journey times come from rail booking sites and unofficial timetable summaries, not from Trenitalia. The timetable changes in mid-December, so confirm your train on Trenitalia before you travel. For the bigger picture, see our guide to trains in Italy.

Where to stay in Bressanone
Staying in town also lets you see the market after dark without watching the train clock. Here are two central options listed on Expedia:
- Hotel Elephant, Via Rio Bianco 4, a historic hotel in the old town.
- GrünerBaum Hotels, Via Stufles 11, in the Stufles quarter across the Isarco river.

Combine Bressanone with other Christmas markets
Bressanone works well as part of a short rail trip along the Brenner line. It pairs easily with the Bolzano Christmas market, 30 minutes south, or with the Vipiteno Christmas market under the Zwölferturm, farther north. The Merano Christmas market is also an easy add-on from Bolzano. For the full list with dates by city, read our guide to Christmas markets in Italy, and see Italy in December for weather and crowds.
