The Venice tourist tax (imposta di soggiorno) depends on where you sleep: up to €5.00 per person per night in a 5-star hotel in the historic center, less on the Lido and in Mestre, and less again in January. However, you pay it for 5 nights at most. Overnight guests, in turn, do not pay the day-tripper access fee.

Last updated: October 20, 2026. We also checked the rates on the official City of Venice sources linked below. Since rates change, we update this page whenever the city does.

How much is the Venice tourist tax per night?

Venice sets rates by zone and season, so where and when you stay both matter. The table shows the high season, which runs from February 1 to December 31; January rates are lower.

Type of lodgingPer person, per night
Hotel 5★: center / Lido and islands / mainland€5.00 / €4.50 / €3.50
Hotel 4★€4.50 / €3.60 / €3.10
Hotel 3★€3.50 / €2.80 / €2.40
Hotel 2★€2.00 / €1.60 / €1.40
Hotel 1★€1.00 / €0.80 / €0.70
B&Bs and tourist apartments, 5 to 2 lions€5.00 to €2.00 in the center
Short lets, by property category€5.00 / €4.00 / €3.00 in every zone

We took these figures from the City of Venice rate booklet, so you can check them yourself. Indeed, these rates have applied since April 1, 2025. For instance, the center zone includes the Giudecca; the Lido, Murano and Burano are in the islands zone; Mestre is on the mainland.

How much will you pay in total?

So what does the tax add to a typical stay? We calculated these examples from the official rates:

  • A couple, 3 nights in a 4-star hotel in the center: 2 people × 3 nights × €4.50 = €27.00.
  • A couple, 7 nights in a 4-star hotel in Mestre: 2 people × 5 nights × €3.10 = €31.00. That is because the city stops charging after night 5.
  • A family with two children under 10, 4 nights in a 3-star hotel in the center: only the 2 adults pay, so 2 × 4 × €3.50 = €28.00.

Who is exempt from the Venice city tax?

The City of Venice lists these exemptions in its rate booklet:

  • children under 10, and residents of Venice;
  • patients in rehabilitation, one companion for each hospitalized patient, and both parents of a sick child;
  • coach drivers and one tour leader for every 25 group members;
  • people with a visible or certified disability;
  • volunteers at public events or emergencies, and police, armed forces and firefighters on duty.

How do you pay the tourist tax in Venice?

As in other cities, you pay the tax to the hotel or host, who passes it to the city.

However, we found no official statement on Airbnb or other platforms collecting it in Venice. So expect to pay the host on arrival or at check-out.

Venice tourist tax vs the access fee

These are two different charges. First, the tourist tax is for overnight guests. By contrast, the access fee (contributo di accesso) is for day visitors over 14 who enter the old city on set days.

So if you sleep anywhere in the City of Venice, Mestre included, you pay the tourist tax and you do not pay the access fee. In 2026 they still had to register on the official cda.ve.it portal to get an exemption QR code, according to the city. The 2027 rules are not set yet.

The 2026 season ended on July 26. On October 15, 2026, the city approved the 2027 calendar: 72 days from March 26 to August 15, 2027, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., at up to €10. Meanwhile, the city will set the other rules later. See our Venice access fee guide.

Will the Venice tourist tax change in 2027?

Nothing is approved as of October 20, 2026. In September 2026, local press reported that the city was preparing new zones and higher rates, with hotel maximums of €8 to €9, from 2027. The City Council must still approve any change. So check back before you travel, because we update this page when it does.
