A Venice in a day tour can mean two very different days. One keeps you in the historic center, with St. Mark’s Basilica, the Doge’s Palace and a gondola ride; the other adds a boat out to Murano and Burano and runs until late afternoon. We compared the strongest option of each kind on Viator. Venice In a Day St Mark’s Doges Palace Gondola Ride and City Tour is rated 4.8 across 5,017 reviews, from about $133 per person. St. Mark’s, Doge’s Palace & Gondola Ride with Murano and Burano is rated 4.6 across 1,076 reviews, from about $209 per person.
How we picked
We searched Viator for Venice in a day tours on October 1, 2026 and kept those with an English-speaking guide and reserved entry to both St. Mark’s Basilica and the Doge’s Palace. Among the tours that stay in the city center, we took the one with by far the most reviews. Among those that add Murano and Burano, we took the one with the most reviews; another full-day option listed fewer than 120. The two tours answer the real question behind a single day in Venice: do you want the islands, or more time in the center?
The verdict
For a first visit with a single day, Venice In a Day St Mark’s Doges Palace Gondola Ride and City Tour is our pick. It spends about three hours inside St. Mark’s Basilica and the Doge’s Palace, adds a gondola ride and a walk around the Rialto, and leaves you free by early afternoon. It also has nearly five times the reviews of the alternative, 88% of them five stars, and it costs less.
St. Mark’s, Doge’s Palace & Gondola Ride with Murano and Burano is the one to book if seeing the islands matters to you and you will not have another day for them. In return, you get about two hours inside the basilica and the palace instead of three, two different guides, and a nine-and-a-half-hour day.
Neither tour includes lunch, and neither is wheelchair accessible.
Adding up the itineraries on Viator, the city tour spends about 3 hours inside St. Mark’s Basilica and the Doge’s Palace. The island tour spends about 2 hours in the same two buildings and 3 hours and 30 minutes on Murano and Burano, plus the boat across the lagoon. So the real trade is one hour inside the palace and the basilica against an afternoon on the islands. If you have a second day, do the islands on their own with a Murano and Burano tour and keep the first day for the center.
Which one is for you?
Take the city tour if
- It is your first time in Venice and you want the main sights with a guide.
- The inside of St. Mark’s Basilica and the Doge’s Palace matters more to you than the islands.
- You want your afternoon free, or you are arriving by train for the day.
- Price counts: it is the cheaper of the two, even at the price for two adults.
Take the island tour if
- You want Murano and Burano and have only one day in Venice.
- You would rather sit on a boat for part of the day than walk the whole time.
- You are traveling with a stroller: this tour is listed as stroller accessible.
- A long day with a lunch break in the middle suits you.
Skip both if anyone in your group uses a wheelchair: neither tour is wheelchair accessible, and the city tour also does not accept strollers. Instead, our gondola ride comparison and the Venice private tours let you set your own pace.
Where the hours go
Times as listed in each tour’s itinerary on Viator. However, the island tour says the order can change with the start time, and the city tour’s length depends on the departure you pick.

What each price covers
The city tour
Included: a skip-the-line ticket for St. Mark’s Basilica (listed at €12), a reserved ticket for the Doge’s Palace (listed at €25), a gondola ride, a guided walk through the back streets, the Rialto Bridge and the Rialto fish market, the Bridge of Sighs and the New Prisons, and an English-speaking guide.
Not included: hotel pickup, lunch and tips. Groups are capped at 20 on the 8:30 a.m. departure and at 25 on the 8:15 a.m. one.
The island tour
Included: an English-speaking guide, timed entry and a guided tour of St. Mark’s Basilica (the ticket is listed at €12) and of the Doge’s Palace, a 30-minute shared gondola ride, a round-trip private boat to Murano and Burano, a glassblowing demonstration on Murano, a lacemaking demonstration on Burano, and free time on both islands. Groups are capped at 20.
Not included: lunch, which you buy during the free time.
Where each one starts
- City tour: outside the church of San Giacomo di Rialto, in Campo San Giacomo near the Rialto Bridge. It ends in St. Mark’s Square.
- Island tour: between the two columns of San Marco and San Teodoro, on the canal side of St. Mark’s Square. It ends where it starts.
Before you go: both tours need a photo ID to enter St. Mark’s Basilica, and the name on the booking must match it. The city tour cancels bookings without full names and does not allow name changes. In addition, shoulders and knees must be covered inside the basilica, and the island tour asks you not to bring large bags or backpacks. On the city tour, if the basilica closes for a religious service the guide explains it from outside, and there is no refund if a private event closes a site or if high water or bad weather cancels the gondola ride.
Check the option name when you book the city tour. Viator lists a shorter “Venice Express” option that leaves out the gondola. On the mid-October date we checked, both departures of the main option included the gondola, but one recent reviewer says they paid without realizing their option did not.

What travelers say
On the city tour
Did on first day and got a great overview of Venice and saw places to go back to.
Susan_M, September 2026, via Viator
This is not for sedentary people who are not used to walking for hours and climbing stairs.
Alfred_L, September 2026, via Viator
On the island tour
The over the ear devices worked well, allowing the whole group to hear the guide in some of busier areas.
Judy_E, September 2026, via Viator
The guide and the boat ride was nice and informative, but the time spent on each island could have been longer.
Viveka_J, September 2026, via Viator
Recent reviews of the city tour praise the guides and the gondola ride, and several warn about the amount of walking and the crowds around St. Mark’s. On the island tour, reviewers often name two guides, one for the morning and one for the afternoon. Still, the three-star review above is the one to read before you book: the time on each island is short.
Cheaper ways to do the same day
You can build the same day yourself with timed tickets for the basilica and the palace and a gondola on your own. However, you lose the guide and you take on the booking windows yourself. Our guides to St. Mark’s Basilica tickets, Doge’s Palace tickets and the cost of a gondola ride explain how each one works. Visiting for the day only? Then check whether the Venice access fee applies on your date.

Questions travelers ask
Which Venice in a day tour is best?
For most first-time visitors, Venice In a Day St Mark’s Doges Palace Gondola Ride and City Tour. It is rated 4.8 across 5,017 reviews, spends about three hours inside St. Mark’s Basilica and the Doge’s Palace and includes a gondola ride. If you want Murano and Burano on the same day, book St. Mark’s, Doge’s Palace & Gondola Ride with Murano and Burano instead.
Can you see Venice in one day?
You can see the main sights of the historic center in one day. On the tours compared here, about two to three hours are spent inside St. Mark’s Basilica and the Doge’s Palace; adding Murano and Burano turns it into a nine-and-a-half-hour day with less time in each place.
Is the gondola ride included?
Yes on both tours, for about 30 minutes; on the island tour the gondola is shared. On the city tour, check that your option is not “Venice Express”, which leaves it out, and note that the ride is not refunded if high water or bad weather cancels it.
Is lunch included?
No. The island tour has about an hour of free time for lunch at your own expense. On the city tour, the 8:30 a.m. departure includes a lunch break on your own, while the four-hour 8:15 a.m. departure has none.
Can I cancel?
The city tour gives a full refund up to 3 days before, the island tour up to 24 hours before, as shown on Viator on October 1, 2026. Check the terms again when you book.
Book the city tour if you want St. Mark’s, the Doge’s Palace and a gondola in one guided morning; book the island tour if Murano and Burano are worth a nine-and-a-half-hour day.
