Quick answer: If you are asking where was The Talented Mr Ripley filmed, the 1999 movie used locations across Italy rather than one town. The fictional Mongibello combines Ischia and Procida, while important scenes were also filmed in Naples, Rome, Anzio, Venice, Palermo and Porto Ercole.

Anthony Minghella’s film turns 1950s Italy into a seductive world of sunlit islands, jazz clubs, grand hotels and uneasy elegance. Its geography, however, is deliberately deceptive: Palermo becomes Naples, two islands merge into one fictional village and buildings frequently stand in for places hundreds of kilometres away.

This guide separates the story from the real map and explains which Talented Mr Ripley filming locations you can visit. We checked production details against the national screen-location database Italy for Movies.

Is Mongibello a real place?

No. The film created Mongibello from two islands in the Gulf of Naples. Tom arrives beneath the Aragonese Castle at Ischia Ponte, while the streets and harbor atmosphere come largely from Marina Corricella on Procida. Combining them allowed the production to create an idealised southern Italian town that does not exist on a single map.

1. Ischia: the gateway to Mongibello

Tom’s first view of Mongibello is Ischia Ponte, with the Aragonese Castle rising dramatically offshore. The crew filmed the first meeting with Dickie and Marge near Lungomare Cristoforo Colombo, while the fifteenth-century Palazzo Malcovati supplied their home and terrace.

Most exterior areas are easy to explore on foot, but Palazzo Malcovati is not a general film attraction. Respect private entrances and residents. Allow a full day for Ischia Ponte, the castle and the seafront rather than racing between camera angles.

2. Procida: Marina Corricella and the village center

Marina Corricella provides Mongibello’s colourful fishing harbor, narrow stairways and lived-in center. Via San Rocco is visible when Dickie rides his Vespa to meet Silvana. Procida is compact and particularly rewarding for travelers who want to explore on foot.

The islands deserve separate days. Ferries connect them with Naples and, seasonally, with one another, but schedules change with weather and time of year. Use our Naples destination guide to plan the mainland stage.

3. Naples—and locations pretending to be elsewhere

Naples appears through the Galleria Principe di Napoli, where Tom and Dickie collect mail, and the magnificent Teatro di San Carlo. In one of the film’s geographical tricks, the opera house represents Rome. Tom’s supposed arrival in Naples was instead filmed at Palermo’s harbor terminal.

Check performance and guided-tour schedules directly with Teatro di San Carlo. The Galleria is a public passage and works well as part of a wider walk through the historic center and museum district.

4. Rome: piazzas, palazzi and borrowed identities

Rome becomes the stage on which Tom’s identity grows more dangerous. Dickie and Tom meet Freddie at Piazza Navona beside Bernini’s Fountain of the Four Rivers. Tom later moves through the Campidoglio and Imperial Fora, while Piazza di Spagna frames encounters with Marge and Meredith.

Palazzo Costaguti in Piazza Mattei supplied Tom’s apartment, but it is a historic private building rather than an open film museum. Nearby public spaces form an excellent self-guided route. Continue planning with our Rome travel guide.

5. Anzio: the “Sanremo” jazz festival

The crew shot the jazz festival presented as Sanremo at Paradiso sul Mare, an Art Nouveau former casino on the Anzio seafront. Opening hours and interior access can change, so verify locally before traveling. Anzio is reachable by regional train from Rome.

6. Venice and the final deception

Tom reaches Venice by vaporetto and meets Peter around Piazza San Marco and St Mark’s Basilica. Santa Lucia station and the Grand Canal appear when Marge arrives. The concert rehearsal, however, took place in Palermo’s Church of Santa Maria dell’Ammiraglio, better known as La Martorana.

7. Porto Ercole and the wider Italian map

The crew also filmed scenes at Porto Ercole on Monte Argentario, in southern Tuscany, while Cinecittà Studios supplied constructed environments. The full production map therefore crosses Campania, Lazio, Tuscany, Veneto and Sicily.

How to plan a Talented Mr Ripley itinerary

A realistic trip needs at least seven days: base yourself in Naples for two nights, dedicate one day each to Procida and Ischia, then travel to Rome for two or three nights. Venice and Palermo belong in a longer itinerary or a separate journey. Trying to reproduce the film’s fictional geography in one continuous route creates unnecessary transfers.

Late spring and September offer warm island weather with fewer peak-season pressures. Ferry services are more frequent in summer, but accommodation and coastal transport are busier. Always confirm the latest ferry and venue schedules.
