Colosseum Underground Tour 2026: Official Tickets, Guided Tours, Night Visits and Rules
How to see the Colosseum underground: the official Full Experience ticket, guided groups, licensed-guide slots, the night visit, the third level and what to wear, checked September 2026.

A colosseum underground tour takes you below the arena floor into the hypogeum. This maze of corridors once held animals, fighters and stage machinery. However, access is tightly controlled, so your ticket decides what you see and how early you must book. Below, this guide sets out the official options, the rules and when a private guide is worth it.
The short answer: the only official ticket that includes the underground is the Full Experience Underground and Arena. It costs about €24, or about €32 with the park’s own educational tour (checked September 2026). It goes on sale 30 days ahead, and slots are limited. Also, you visit the underground in a guided group, so arrive 30 minutes before your slot. If official slots are gone, a licensed guide with a reserved slot is the main alternative. Until October 22, 2026, a night visit also includes the underground.

What the hypogeum and the arena floor are
In fact, the Colosseum had two worlds. Above, spectators watched the games from tiered seating. Below, a two-level service area held cages, ramps and hoists. According to the park’s page on the underground levels (checked September 2026), it was first built in wood. Later, it was rebuilt in masonry under the emperor Domitian. In addition, the page describes 14 corridors laid out on either side of a large central passage. At the ends of the corridors sat the lifts that raised animals and scenery through trapdoors.
The arena floor is a different thing. Today, a modern platform covers part of the old arena, and you can walk on it. As a result, many tickets and tours include the arena but not the underground. Read the listing carefully, because “arena floor” and “underground” are often mentioned side by side.
How the official Colosseum underground tour works
The official route is the Full Experience Underground and Arena ticket. According to the official page, it includes the underground, the arena and the Colosseum Museum. It also covers the Roman Forum, the Palatine Hill and several smaller sites nearby. Moreover, the ticket is valid for two consecutive days, and you get one entry to the Colosseum at a booked time.
- Guided groups only. The park’s visitor regulation (October 2024, checked September 2026) allows underground access only “in guided groups of a maximum of 25 people every 15 minutes.”
- Educational tour option. The official page also sells the same ticket with an educational tour for about €32. However, it does not state the tour languages, so check them at checkout.
- Arrive early. Underground ticket holders must arrive 30 minutes before their slot. There is no tolerance for delays.
- Time limit. Full Experience tickets allow a stay of up to 90 minutes inside the monument.
- Purchase cap. One buyer can purchase at most eight underground tickets per day.
- ID check. The ticket must be shown with an identity document at the gates.
In addition, the official page listed a last access of 5:15 p.m. (checked September 2026). Hours change with the season, so confirm your slot time on the booking page.
Official ticket or a guided Colosseum underground tour?
Private and small-group tours reach the underground in a separate way. The park reserves some underground slots for licensed guides. According to the regulation for guided tours in the underground (checked September 2026), only the guide who leads the tour can book. Each guide may take up to six visitors, in one shift per day.
As a result, the market works differently. Underground tours from licensed guides are small by design, and there are only so many slots each day. Therefore, they usually cost more than the official ticket. In return, a guide often stays with you across the whole site. You also avoid the rush on release day.
How to choose
- Pick the official ticket if you can book early and want the lowest price.
- Pick a licensed guide if official slots are gone or you want a small group.
- Check any third-party listing for the word “underground” in the inclusions. If it says only “arena floor,” you will not go below.
Finally, beware of lookalike sites that use “Colosseum” in their names. Some resell the official ticket with a markup, while others sell tours that skip the underground. For a plain official ticket, the checkout should be on the park’s own ticketing site. Our guide to Colosseum tickets explained covers every standard ticket. The Italy tickets hub covers other big sights.
The third level and the Belvedere
The underground is the lowest point of the building. By contrast, the Full Experience Attic ticket takes you to the top. According to the official attic ticket page (checked September 2026), it covers the upper levels and the attic. For example, a panoramic lift reaches the third level, while the attic requires climbing steep steps. The page lists a maximum of eight people per visit and about €24 for a full ticket.
This ticket does not include the underground or the arena. So for both the depths and the views, you need two tickets.
The Colosseum underground tour at night
For a few more weeks this season, there is a second official way in. The official “Una Notte al Colosseo” page (checked September 2026) lists guided evening visits from July 7 to October 22, 2026. They run on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m., with last entry at 9:50 p.m. The page lists no visits on October 1.
- Route: a guided visit of about 60 minutes across the first level, the arena floor and the underground.
- Group size: up to 25 people per slot, with mandatory booking.
- Price: about €50 for a full ticket (checked September 2026).
- Booking: tickets go on sale seven days before each date.
After October 22, however, the night program ends for 2026. Our guide to Rome night tours compares the other evening options in the city.
What to wear, what to bring and accessibility
- Shoes: the regulation requires closed footwear suitable for rough paths. Underground floors are uneven, so skip sandals.
- Bags: hand luggage must not exceed 30 x 40 x 15 cm. Expect metal detectors. Large backpacks, trekking poles and glass bottles are not allowed.
- Children: kids under 12 must be accompanied by an adult with a valid ticket. Under-18s enter state sites free, but free tickets must still be reserved.
- Accessibility: according to the park’s accessibility page (checked September 2026), a lift links the first and second levels. A goods lift connects to the underground. Three wheelchairs are available at the first-level information point. Call the park before booking to confirm your slot can use the lift.
