Things to Do in Tropea: Sanctuary, Beaches and Trains (2026)
Things to do in Tropea, Calabria: 2026 hours for Santa Maria dell'Isola, the old town and cathedral, beaches, boat trips, red onions and the train from Lamezia Terme.

Tropea is a small town in Calabria, at the toe of Italy’s boot, built on a cliff that the town describes as about 60 meters high, dropping straight into a clear sea. Below it sit the beaches, and on a rock of its own stands the Sanctuary of Santa Maria dell’Isola, the view on every postcard. The main things to do in Tropea fit into two or three slow days: the sanctuary, the old town, the beach, a boat along the coast and a lot of red onions. This guide covers the 2026 opening hours, the train from Lamezia Terme and what changes when the season ends in fall.
The short answer: start with the Sanctuary of Santa Maria dell’Isola, open in October from 9:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., then only in the morning from November 1 to 15, and closed from December to March (checked September 2026). Walk the old town and its 12th-century cathedral, go down to the beach, and book a boat to Capo Vaticano or the Aeolian Islands while the season lasts. From Lamezia Terme, direct regional trains reach Tropea in about 50 minutes for €4.70.

Opening hours for the sanctuary come from its official site; the facts on the cathedral and the town come from the municipality of Tropea. Both were read in September 2026.
Visit Santa Maria dell’Isola
The sanctuary is the first of the things to do in Tropea. The town says it is believed to have been built in the 6th century by monks from the East, later passed to the Benedictines, and was damaged by the 1905 earthquake. The sanctuary’s own site says it has been run by the Abbey of Montecassino since the 11th century. Inside is an image of the Madonna of the Assumption; outside, a panoramic garden looks back at the town.
Getting up there: you reach it by a staircase cut into the rock, from Via Lungomare. The town notes there is no ramp, so it is not accessible for wheelchair users.
Opening hours in 2026, as published by the sanctuary:
- April, May and October: 9:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.
- June to September: 9:30 a.m. to 8 p.m.
- November 1 to 15: 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
- December to March: closed
If you travel in late fall, this is the detail that matters: after mid-November you will only see the sanctuary from the outside, from the belvederes of the old town or from the beach.
Walk the old town and see the cathedral
The old town sits on top of the cliff, a tangle of narrow streets opening onto balconies over the sea. Its main church is the Cathedral of Maria Santissima di Romania, which the municipality dates to the 12th century, under the Normans. The town lists it with free access and a ramp for wheelchair users. In 2021, Tropea won the TV contest Il Borgo dei Borghi, the title of Italy’s favorite village, as the Italian Ministry of Tourism reported.

Things to do in Tropea by the sea
The beaches
The beaches run right below the cliff and around the sanctuary rock. Some stretches are free, others are run by beach clubs that rent umbrellas and loungers. The water usually stays warm enough for swimming well into October, which makes early fall a good time to come: fewer people, same sea.
Boat trips along the Coast of the Gods
The coast around Tropea and Capo Vaticano, nicknamed the Costa degli Dei or Coast of the Gods, is best seen from a boat, with coves you cannot reach on foot. Longer trips cross to the Aeolian Islands: one local operator, Tripodi Navigazione, lists its 2026 Aeolian tours from April 10 to October 31, leaving from the port of Tropea. What to eat in Tropea
Two ingredients define the table here, and both are on the list of things to do in Tropea for anyone who likes food.
- The red onion of Tropea: sweet enough to eat raw, and protected in the EU as Cipolla Rossa di Tropea Calabria IGP since 2008 (Regulation (EC) No 284/2008). The protected area runs along the coast through the provinces of Cosenza, Catanzaro and Vibo Valentia. Look for it in salads, jams and even gelato.
- ‘Nduja: a soft, spicy spreadable pork salami, listed by the region of Calabria among its traditional food products (ARSAC). Spread it on bread or stir it into pasta.

How to get to Tropea
The nearest airport is Lamezia Terme, and Tropea has its own railway station.
| From | How | Time | Fare (checked Sept 2026) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lamezia Terme Centrale | Regional train, direct | 48–55 min | €4.70 |
| Lamezia Terme Centrale | Regional trains with one change | About 1 h 45 min | €8.50 |
Times and fares were read on Trenitalia for a Wednesday in mid-October 2026; direct trains are not hourly, so check the timetable before you book a flight. For how tickets and regional trains work, see our guide to trains in Italy.
When to visit Tropea
July and August bring the crowds and the highest prices. September and October are the sweet spot: the sea is still warm, boat trips are still running and the sanctuary keeps long hours until October 31. From November, the town slows down, the Aeolian boat season is over (one operator lists October 31 as its last day) and the sanctuary closes after November 15. In short, the best things to do in Tropea depend on the calendar more than in most Italian towns. For the rest of Italy in the same months, see Italy in October.
