Milan Duomo Tickets: Lift or Stairs, Which Pass, Hours and Prices (2026)
Milan Duomo tickets explained: official 2026 prices for the cathedral, the terraces by lift or stairs and the museum, plus hours, bag and dress rules and which ticket to buy.

Buying Milan Duomo tickets is simple once you know the one real choice: do you want the roof or not? The cathedral sells separate tickets for the church, the museum and the rooftop terraces. It also sells combos, so this guide sets out the official 2026 prices, the lift versus stairs question and the rules at the door.
The short answer: for most first-time visitors, the best Milan Duomo ticket is the Duomo and Terraces combo. It costs €22 with the stairs or €26 with the lift (checked September 2026). If you skip the roof, the Duomo and Museum ticket costs €10. On Wednesdays, however, the museum is closed, so only a Duomo-only ticket is sold. The complex opens daily from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., with last entry at 6 p.m.

Milan Duomo tickets at a glance
All prices below come from the official ticket office of the Duomo (checked September 2026). Each ticket gives one entry per area of the visit.
| Ticket | What it covers | Full / reduced price | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Duomo and Terraces, stairs | Cathedral, terraces on foot | €22 / €11 | Fit visitors who want the full experience |
| Duomo and Terraces, lift | Cathedral, terraces with the lift up | €26 / €13 | Most visitors, and anyone with tired legs |
| Fast-Track Pass | Priority lift to the terraces, cathedral, museum, archaeological area, crypt | €32 / €16 | Peak days and short stays |
| Duomo and Museum | Cathedral and the Duomo Museum | €10 / €5 | Art lovers who skip the roof |
| Culture Pass | Cathedral, archaeological area, museum, St. Charles crypt | €15 / €7.50 | History fans |
| Terraces only, stairs or lift | The roof, without the church | €16 or €18 / €8 or €9 | A second visit, or sunset views |
| Combo Stairs + Pinacoteca Ambrosiana | Cathedral, terraces on foot, museum, archaeological area, Pinacoteca Ambrosiana, crypt of San Sepolcro | €36 / €24 | A long art day in the center |
In short, the terraces are what most people remember. So unless you have seen them before, pick a ticket that includes the roof. For how these prices compare with other big sights, see our snapshot of museum ticket prices in Italy.
Which Milan Duomo ticket should you buy?
Choose Duomo and Terraces with the stairs if you are happy to climb. According to the official terraces page, the climb is 251 steps to a height of about 50 meters.
Choose the lift version if you travel with kids, older relatives or a tight schedule. It costs €4 more, and it saves most of the climb.
Choose the Fast-Track Pass if you visit on a weekend, a holiday or in summer. It adds priority access to the terraces lift. In addition, it bundles the museum, the archaeological area and the crypt.
Choose Duomo and Museum if heights are not for you. The museum holds original statues and stained glass from the cathedral, so it explains what you see inside.
Choose a guided tour if you want the story, not just the view. The guide handles the entry, too. Our best tours in Milan for first-timers page compares the main formats.
Lift or stairs: how the terraces really work
The lift is the most misunderstood part of Milan Duomo tickets. In fact, it does not take you all the way. According to the official terraces page (checked September 2026), the lift goes up to the first level only. After that, you reach the second level on foot, and everyone walks down by the stairs.
- Stairs ticket: you climb all 251 steps, then walk down.
- Lift ticket: you ride to the first level, then climb a short final section and walk down.
- Accessibility: the ticket office lists the terraces as a route with limited accessibility. So check the accessibility section of the official site before you book.
- Weather: the roof is open-air marble, so it gets hot in summer and slippery in rain. Also, wear shoes with grip.
Opening hours and the best time to go
According to the official Duomo and Museum ticket page (checked September 2026), the cathedral and terraces open every day from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. The last ticket is sold at 5:50 p.m., and the last entry is at 6 p.m. Meanwhile, the Duomo Museum opens from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and closes on Wednesdays.
- Arrive at 9 a.m. for the quietest terraces and the softest light on the marble.
- Avoid Wednesday if you want the museum, since it is closed that day.
- Late afternoon works for the roof, but keep the 6 p.m. last entry in mind.
- Summer weekends: in 2026, the terraces stayed open until 8 p.m. on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from June 5 to September 13.
Also, check the urgent notices on the official site before you go. Services and ceremonies can change the hours at short notice.

Dress code, bags and security checks
Every Milan Duomo ticket comes with the same house rules. The official ticket pages list them as icons, and these are the ones that trip up visitors most often (checked September 2026):
- Cover shoulders and legs inside the cathedral and museum. So pack a light scarf in summer.
- No luggage and no backpacks in the cathedral, and no luggage on the terraces. The Duomo runs a luggage storage service, listed on its ticket site.
- No food or drinks, glass or knives, and no tripods or drones.
- No high heels on the terraces route, so wear flat shoes.
Finally, expect a security check at the entrance. As a result, the line can move slowly even with a timed ticket, so arrive 15 minutes early.
Where to buy Milan Duomo tickets
The safest place to buy Milan Duomo tickets is the official ticket office website, which sells every combo above. The Duomo also publishes a list of authorized resellers on the same site. Otherwise, you can buy at the ticket office on Piazza del Duomo, but queues are common in high season.
Alternatively, a guided rooftop tour includes the entry and a guide, which suits travelers who want context. Prices and ratings for two such tours are on our Milan Duomo rooftop tour page.
Getting to the Duomo
The cathedral stands on Piazza del Duomo, right above the Duomo metro stop on lines M1 and M3. So from Milano Centrale, the yellow M3 line takes you straight there. Flying in? Then our guide from Malpensa to Milan compares the trains and fixed taxi fares into the city.
Pair the Duomo with the Last Supper
The Duomo and Leonardo’s Last Supper make a natural half day together. However, Last Supper slots sell out weeks ahead, so book that one first and fit the Duomo around it. Our guide to Last Supper tickets explains how the release dates work. Then plan the rest with our Milan itinerary and our list of things to do in Milan.

Milan Duomo tickets: frequently asked questions

The lift saves most of the 251 steps, but it only reaches the first level of the terraces. You still climb a short section and walk down by the stairs.

The cathedral and terraces open daily from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., with last entry at 6 p.m. The Duomo Museum opens from 10 a.m. and closes on Wednesdays.
Is there a dress code at the Milan Duomo?
Yes. Shoulders and legs must be covered in the cathedral and museum. Luggage and backpacks are not allowed inside.
Is the Duomo Museum open on Wednesdays?
No. The museum closes on Wednesdays, so that day the ticket office sells a Duomo-only ticket for the cathedral instead of the Duomo and Museum combo.
