Lake Garda Itinerary: 1 to 4 Days by Shore, Boats and Bases (2026)
A Lake Garda itinerary for 1, 2, 3 or 4 days, shore by shore: Sirmione, Malcesine and Monte Baldo, Salò and Limone, Riva del Garda, with boat seasons, fares and bases.

A good Lake Garda itinerary starts with one choice: which shore to sleep on. Italy’s largest lake is more than 50 kilometers long. As a result, the flat south and the alpine north feel like two trips. This plan gives 1, 2, 3 and 4-day versions, shore by shore, with boat and bus logic.
The short answer: with one day, see Sirmione, ideally not on a Monday, when the castle is closed. With two days, add Malcesine and the Monte Baldo cable car on the east shore. With three, cross to Salò, Gardone and Limone by boat. With four, finish in Riva del Garda and Torbole in the north. Base yourself in the south without a car, and check the boat season first: regular ships stop in early fall.

Only one free day? Then our page on a Lake Garda day trip to Sirmione covers the south shore with the transport handled.
Lake Garda itinerary at a glance
| Plan | Shores | Base | Book or check first |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 day | South: Sirmione, plus Desenzano or Peschiera | Verona, Milan or a southern town | Scaliger Castle is closed on Mondays |
| 2 days | South, then east: Bardolino, Lazise, Malcesine | Desenzano, Peschiera or Bardolino | Monte Baldo cable car tickets |
| 3 days | South, east, then west: Salò, Gardone, Limone | Desenzano, Sirmione or Garda | Vittoriale timed visit; boat timetable |
| 4 days | All four, ending north: Riva del Garda, Torbole | Split: two nights south, two north | Bus and boat links north |
This page is the day-by-day plan. For guided formats and boat tours, see our page on Lake Garda tours. For the region, see our Veneto travel guide.
Which shore fits your Lake Garda itinerary?
First, pick the shore that matches your trip. In fact, each one has a different landscape and a different way in.
| Shore | Main towns | Feel | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| South | Sirmione, Desenzano, Peschiera | Flat, busy, on the railway | Short stays and travelers without a car |
| East (Veneto) | Lazise, Bardolino, Garda, Malcesine | Olive groves, vineyards, Monte Baldo above | Wine, views and the cable car |
| West (Lombardy) | Salò, Gardone Riviera, Limone | Steeper, quieter, grand villas | Gardens, history and slow boat days |
| North (Trentino) | Riva del Garda, Torbole, Arco | Alpine cliffs and wind | Hiking, cycling and sailing |
- Choose the south if you arrive by train, since Desenzano and Peschiera both have stations and piers. It also suits one or two days.
- Choose the east or west if you want quieter evenings, or a wine day, since Bardolino and Valpolicella sit on the Verona side.
- Choose the north if you came for the outdoors. However, it works best with a car or with patience for longer transfers.
Getting around: boats, buses and car
On the lake, the public boats are the backbone of a car-free trip. However, they run on a seasonal calendar, so check it before you fix the days.
Boats on a Lake Garda itinerary: fares and fast services
The public service is run by Navigazione Laghi. According to the official timetable page (checked September 2026), ships run from Desenzano to Riva. There is also a car ferry between Maderno and Torri. In 2026, the summer timetable runs from May 16 to October 4. In addition, some runs are fast services that cost a supplement.
In practice, fares depend on distance. The 2026 passenger fare table (checked September 2026) lists €3.50 for Desenzano to Sirmione and €16 for Desenzano to Riva. Fast services add €2.50 to €6. Also, a one-day pass for the whole lake costs €39.50. Meanwhile, a pass for the lower or upper half costs €27.
The fall and winter rule
Above all, know when the ships stop. The 2025-2026 reduced timetable ran from October 6 to November 2, 2025, and again in March. Between November 3 and March 6, only the Torri to Maderno car ferry operated. So, for a late-fall trip, check the new timetable once it is published.
Buses and driving
Then buses fill the gaps. For example, the Garda Trentino bus page lists Arriva line LN027 from Riva via Limone and Salò to Desenzano. It also lists ATV line 484 from Riva via Malcesine to Garda. Meanwhile, a car makes the north and west easier.
1-day Lake Garda itinerary: Sirmione and the south shore
With one day, this is the whole Lake Garda itinerary. It is also day 1 of the longer plans. Sirmione sits on a narrow peninsula, so everything is walkable.
Morning: the Scaliger Castle
First, arrive early, before the tour groups. The Scaliger Castle guards the entrance to the old town. According to Musei Lombardia (checked September 2026), it opens Tuesday to Sunday, from 8:30 a.m. to 7:15 p.m., and closes on Mondays. Full entry costs €10. However, booking is optional.
Midday: the Grotte di Catullo
Next, walk to the tip of the peninsula. There, meanwhile, the Grotte di Catullo preserve a large Roman villa and a museum. The official site page lists Monday opening from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. only, and payment by card only. Also, a €20 combined ticket, valid for seven days, covers the castle, the Grotte and the Roman villa in Desenzano.
Afternoon: Desenzano or Peschiera
After that, take the boat to Desenzano, the largest town on the lake, for its harbor and Roman villa. Alternatively, head to Peschiera, a fortress town ringed by water. Both have train stations, so the day ends easily in Verona or Milan.
2-day Lake Garda itinerary: add the east shore and Monte Baldo
On day 2, the Lake Garda itinerary moves to the Veneto side. First, stop in Lazise and Bardolino, two lakefront towns among vineyards. In fact, Bardolino gives its name to a light red wine and a rosé.
Malcesine and the Monte Baldo cable car
Next, continue north to Malcesine, a castle town below Monte Baldo. According to Funivie del Baldo (checked September 2026), the 2026 season runs from April 4 to November 1. A return ticket to the top costs €30, or €28 online, and a one-way ticket costs €22. Also, departures run every 30 minutes, weather permitting.
So how does it fit the day? Go up in the morning, when queues are shorter. Then bring a warm layer, since the summit is far cooler than the shore. From October 5, however, the last ascent is at 4 p.m., so plan the cable car first in fall.
Finally, for night 2, stay in Garda or Bardolino for a quiet evening on the east shore. Alternatively, return to the south if you have a train the next day.
3-day Lake Garda itinerary: Salò, Gardone and Limone by boat
Day 3 of the Lake Garda itinerary crosses to the Lombardy side. Because this shore is steeper, the boat is the easiest way to see it.
Morning: Salò and Gardone Riviera
First, stop in Salò for its long lakefront promenade. Then continue to Gardone Riviera for the Vittoriale degli Italiani, the house and gardens of the poet Gabriele D’Annunzio. According to the Vittoriale visitor page (checked September 2026), visits to his house are guided only. They last about 35 minutes, in groups of 10, and tickets should be bought ahead.
Afternoon: Limone sul Garda
Next, take the boat north to Limone. Above all, the village is known for its limonaie, the terraced lemon houses with stone pillars once used to grow citrus. For example, the Limonaia del Castèl is a restored one. According to Visit Limone sul Garda, it opens daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. from September 28 to November 1, 2026, for €2 (checked September 2026).
By contrast, a 3-day plan can swap this day for wine. If so, see our page on a Valpolicella wine tour. Then read our guide to Valpolicella wine tasting.

4-day Lake Garda itinerary: Riva del Garda and Torbole
With a fourth day, the Lake Garda itinerary ends in the north, in Trentino. Here, however, the lake narrows between cliffs, and the mood turns alpine.
Riva del Garda
First, walk the lakefront and the old town of Riva, the main town at the northern tip. Then use it as a base for trails and bike paths into the mountains.
Torbole and Arco
Meanwhile, Torbole is a center for windsurfing and sailing, and nearby Arco draws climbers. So this day suits active travelers more than sightseers.
Note that Riva has no train station. However, the Garda Trentino bus page lists line B332 to Rovereto station and line B205 to Trento. Similarly, the boat to Desenzano links the north with the railway in summer.
Alternatively, spend day 4 in Verona instead. Then our page on a Verona walking tour covers the old town. Also, our Verona itinerary gives the full plan.
Where to base yourself by traveler type
| Traveler | Base | Why |
|---|---|---|
| No car, short stay | Desenzano or Peschiera | Train station and boat pier in one town |
| Couples | Sirmione, Garda or Malcesine | Old towns that quiet down in the evening |
| Wine lovers | Bardolino or Lazise | Bardolino vineyards, close to Valpolicella |
| Families | Peschiera or Lazise | Flat lakefronts, near the theme parks |
| Hikers and cyclists | Riva del Garda or Torbole | Trails, bike paths and wind sports |
Traveling with children? Then our guide to theme parks in Italy covers Gardaland on the southeast shore. Also, most lake towns charge a nightly tourist tax at check-in. See our Italy tourist tax guide.
Getting to Lake Garda from Verona, Milan and Venice
First, the south shore sits on the Milan to Venice railway. As a result, most trips start at Desenzano or Peschiera.
| From | How (checked September 2026) | Arrive at |
|---|---|---|
| Milan Centrale | Italo: about 50 minutes to Desenzano, 56 minutes to Peschiera; regional trains too | South shore |
| Venice Santa Lucia | Italo: about 1 hour 22 minutes to Desenzano | South shore |
| Verona | Regional trains to Peschiera and Desenzano; Arriva bus LN026 to Sirmione; ATV buses | South and east shores |
From Milan
According to Italo, its trains take about 50 minutes from Milan to Desenzano, with four a day. Similarly, the Peschiera route takes about 56 minutes. For the days before, see our Milan itinerary and our page on a Milan Duomo rooftop tour.
From Venice
From Venice, Italo lists about 1 hour and 22 minutes to Desenzano. Going on to Venice afterward? Then read our plan for 3 days in Venice and see our page on a hidden Venice tour.
From Verona
Finally, Verona is the closest city. For instance, according to Arriva, line LN026 runs from Verona via Peschiera to Sirmione and Desenzano. In addition, the ATV area page lists lines 163 and 164 to the lake, with line 185 in summer only.
A Lake Garda itinerary in fall
Fall is a calm time for a Lake Garda itinerary, with warm days in September and fewer crowds. However, services shrink fast. For example, the summer boat timetable ends on October 4. Then the cable car shortens its hours from October 5 and closes after November 1. Therefore, plan the east and north shores early in the trip, and keep the south, with its trains, for last. For the whole season, see Italy in fall.
