Prosecco Hills Wine Tour from Venice: By Train or by Van?

Prosecco tour from Venice compared: by train with eight tastings and a four-course lunch, or by van with six glasses.

Veneto Prosecco Hills Venice Day Trips Food & Wine Day Trips Food & Wine Small Towns

Prosecco comes from the hills between Conegliano and Valdobbiadene, about an hour north of Venice, and two small-group tours there are rated almost perfectly on Viator. They each take you to two wineries and cost within about $25 of each other. What differs is how you get there, how much you taste and how much you eat, and those differences decide which one is right for your day. Below, we compare two ways to book a Prosecco tour from Venice, side by side.

The verdict

Both are excellent, and both keep groups to eight. The train day has 579 reviews and one below four stars; the van day has 392 reviews and five below four stars. Neither is a gamble.

The train day sends you from Venezia Santa Lucia to Conegliano on a regional train, about 50 minutes, with tickets included; the local team picks you up at the station. From there it is two wineries with four tastings at each, a viewpoint over the UNESCO-listed Prosecco hills, and a four-course lunch at the family’s own osteria (a simple, traditional restaurant), where the spiedo, meat slow-cooked on a spit over an open fire, is the dish to look for.

The van day leaves from Piazzale Roma at 10:00 am in a private minivan and visits two wineries with three glasses at each, served with pairing snacks, plus a light lunch.

Our pick is the train day. For about $23 more per person you get two more tastings at each winery, a proper sit-down lunch instead of a light one, and no time in a van leaving Venice. It also has infant seats and is stroller accessible, while the van day does not take children under 14.

THE VAN DAY DOES NOT TAKE CHILDREN UNDER 14

The van day’s provider states that children under 14 years of age cannot join, and that the tour needs a minimum of two participants to run. It also states that in case of adverse weather or unforeseen closures it does not guarantee a full refund, and will examine each case. The standard 24-hour free cancellation still applies if you cancel in time.

Which one is for you?

Take the train day if

  • Lunch matters. It is a four-course meal at a family osteria, not a snack plate.
  • You want to taste more: four wines at each winery, eight in all.
  • You are traveling with young children (infant seats are available) or need a vegetarian lunch (on request at booking).
  • You like the idea of arriving by train rather than sitting in traffic out of Venice.
  • You want the tour with a near-flawless review record.

Take the van day if

  • You want a later start: 10:00 am from Piazzale Roma instead of a 9:00 am train.
  • You would rather be driven door to door from the edge of Venice.
  • A lighter lunch suits you better than a four-course one in the middle of the day.
  • You want the lower price, about $197 against about $220.
  • You are all adults and do not need the flexibility on age.

What each price covers

The train day, from about $220

Included: round-trip train tickets from Venice to Conegliano; transport between stops in a private vehicle; four wine tastings at each of two wineries; a four-course lunch at the family’s osteria; and bottled water. The day runs Valdobbiadene winery (about two hours), a viewpoint over the Prosecco hills (about an hour), lunch in Pieve di Soligo (about two hours), and a second winery near Conegliano.

Not included: gratuities and hotel pickup. You need to send the full names and one email address so the team can issue the train tickets. The train leaves Santa Lucia at about 9:00 am and the return is at about 5:00 pm. A vegetarian option is available if requested at booking.

The van day, from about $197

Included: two winery visits with three glasses at each; wine-pairing snacks during the tastings; a light lunch; a group coordinator; and a private air-conditioned minivan from Venice and back. Reviewers name the small family wineries they visited in Santo Stefano and Guia, in the Valdobbiadene area.

Not included: hotel pickup. The tour runs rain or shine, with a minimum of two participants and no children under 14. The provider asks to be told about food intolerances or allergies in advance.

Where each one starts

  • Train day: Venezia Santa Lucia station, for a train at about 9:00 am. The experience itself starts at Conegliano station, where you are met. Return train at about 5:00 pm.
  • Van day: Rio Terà Sant’Andrea 462, in the corner of Piazzale Roma, in front of the restaurant Al Vinatier. Look for a yellow sign reading “TOUR.” Departure at 10:00 am.
  • Neither tour collects you from your hotel, and neither is wheelchair accessible. The train day is stroller accessible.
  • Both offer free cancellation up to 24 hours before the start, local time.

On the train day

We went to some off the path wineries that we could not have found ourselves.

Jill_K, July 2026, via Viator

If you think you might buy a bottle or two make sure to leave room in your checked bag–shipping is expensive

Kim_B, July 2026, via Viator

On the van day

We got to visit two splendid wineries and sit and interact with the owners.

Konishjit_B, May 2026, via Viator

Because we had a group of 7 it was like a private tour

Keith_W, February 2026, via Viator

Kim_B’s note is the practical one. Neither listing mentions shipping, so if you plan to buy wine at the wineries, leave room in your checked luggage.

How either fits a Venice trip

Either tour is back in Venice in time for dinner, which makes an evening of cicchetti and wine in the bacari a natural follow-on, if you still have the appetite. For a bigger day out, the Dolomites from Venice takes a full day. For the background on the wine itself, read our guide to Italian Prosecco, and for the rest of the city, the Venice travel guide.
