Plan Abruzzo, Italy’s wild side
National parks, stone villages and an Adriatic coast, within easy driving distance of Rome and still off most itineraries.
The short answer: Abruzzo has three national parks: the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park, the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park, and the Majella National Park, plus the Sirente-Velino Regional Park. Three to four days lets you see one mountain area and a few villages. With a week you can add the Trabocchi Coast and a second national park.

Why choose Abruzzo?
Abruzzo lies east of Rome, between the highest peaks of the Apennines and the Adriatic Sea. Large parts of the region are protected in national and regional parks, and many of its hill villages have kept their medieval shape.
Best for: hiking, nature, small villages, food and repeat visitors to Italy. Ideal stay: 3–4 days for one area, a week for mountains and coast.
Where to go in Abruzzo
Gran Sasso and Campo Imperatore
The highest part of the Apennines, with a high plateau, hiking trails and ski slopes in winter.
Santo Stefano di Sessanio and Rocca Calascio
A stone village and a ruined castle on a ridge, two of the best-known sights in the region.
Sulmona and Scanno
Sulmona, known for its sugared almonds, and Scanno, a mountain village above its lake.
The national parks
The Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park, the Majella and the Gran Sasso: forests, wildlife and trails.
The Trabocchi Coast
South of Pescara, a coastline of wooden fishing platforms on stilts, beaches and a cycle path.
L’Aquila
The regional capital, a good base for the Gran Sasso and the villages around it.
