Where Hotel Guerrato is, and why the location matters
Hotel Guerrato, also known as Pensione Guerrato, stands on Calle Drio la Scimia in San Polo, right by the Rialto Market. The building dates to the 13th century and, according to guidebook research, was once an inn known as the “Inn of the Monkey.” Rooms are simply furnished with wood floors and exposed beams, and some keep traces of old frescoes.
The location means early mornings among the fish and produce stalls, and the Rialto Bridge and the Ca’ d’Oro gallery a short walk away. The nearest vaporetto (water bus) stop is Rialto Mercato. The flip side is noise: rooms facing the market can hear deliveries early in the day, and narrow calli (lanes) mean you carry your own bags from the water.
Getting there
- By vaporetto: get off at Rialto or Rialto Mercato, walk through the market area and turn into Calle Drio la Scimia.
- From Venezia Santa Lucia station or Piazzale Roma: take a vaporetto along the Grand Canal to Rialto, then walk a few minutes.
- Luggage: there are no cars in this part of Venice, so pack light.
- Venice access fee: on certain dates day visitors pay a fee to enter the city. Overnight guests are exempt but must request an exemption voucher in advance.
