The Marmore Falls (Cascata delle Marmore) near Terni are one of Umbria’s most famous sights, but they come with a catch: the water is controlled by a hydroelectric plant and flows at full strength only at set times. This guide gives you the current water release calendar, ticket prices, which entrance to choose and how to get there from Rome without a car.
The short answer: check the release calendar before you go, because in November and December 2026 the full falls run only on weekends and a few extra dates in December, from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m. plus one afternoon hour. A full ticket costs €12, or €6 on winter days without a release. Start at the upper viewpoint if you want an easy visit, or at the lower one if you want to hike up beside the falls.

Marmore Falls opening times: the water release calendar
The falls were created by the Romans, who diverted the Velino River over the cliff into the Nera. Today the flow is managed for hydroelectric power, so the park publishes a monthly calendar of releases. Outside those hours, only a thin stream runs over the rock.
| Period | Days with a release | Release times |
|---|---|---|
| November 2026 | Saturdays and Sundays only | 12:00–1:00 p.m. and 3:00–4:00 p.m. |
| December 2026 | Saturdays and Sundays, plus December 7, 8, 24, 25 and 28–31 | 12:00–1:00 p.m. and 2:00–3:00 p.m. |
The calendar comes from the official Marmore Falls website (checked November 2026). The schedule for 2027 had not been confirmed at the time of checking, so look at the official page for the month you travel. Releases can change, so check the official calendar page again on the morning of your visit.
Marmore Falls tickets
| Ticket | Price |
|---|---|
| Full (ages 10 to 69) | €12 |
| Reduced (ages five to nine, over 70) | €10 |
| Winter days without a water release | €6 |
| Children aged up to four | Free |
| Shuttle between the viewpoints (high season only) | €4 |
Prices come from the official ticket page (checked November 2026). There is also a family rate: with two parents and at least three children under 18, the children pay €6 each, and this rate is sold only at the ticket office. One ticket allows up to six entries across the park’s entrances, so you can move between the top and the bottom.
Upper or lower viewpoint: which entrance to choose

The park has two main entrances. The Belvedere Superiore, in the village of Marmore, looks down on the top of the falls and has the Specola lookout. The Belvedere Inferiore, at Collestatte Piano, looks up at the full drop from below. Trail 1 links the two, but it is the hard way: the park describes it as more than 600 uneven steps.
| Trail | What it is | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|
| Trail 1 | Links the two viewpoints, over 600 uneven steps | Fit walkers with good shoes |
| Trails 2 and 3 | Easy paths near the falls | Most visitors, but not strollers |
| Trail 4 | Panoramic route | Photographers |
| Trail 5 | Flat and accessible | Wheelchairs and strollers, with a limited view of the falls |
| Trail 6 | Outside the park | Experienced hikers only |
Trail details come from the park’s visitor information page. The shuttle between the two viewpoints runs only in high season, on the road outside the park. So in winter, pick one entrance and plan your visit around it.
The Balcone degli Innamorati
The Balcone degli Innamorati, or Lovers’ Balcony, is a viewpoint reached through a tunnel right beside the falling water. It is open only on guided visits, children under 14 must be with an adult, and it is not suitable for people with claustrophobia. You will get wet, so the park recommends a poncho, which the ticket offices sell. Check with the park whether the Balcone is open on your date before you plan around it.
Getting to the Marmore Falls
By train and bus
Take the train to Terni, then the bus. From Terni, urban line 7 or regional line E621 runs about every 30 minutes on Busitalia’s timetable, with fewer buses on Sundays and holidays, and takes about 20 minutes to the “Cascata delle Marmore” stop, and Busitalia’s Marmore Link combines train and bus in one ticket, according to Busitalia (checked November 2026). The fastest trains from Rome to Terni take under one hour (checked November 2026). For tickets and validation, see our guide to trains in Italy.
By car
With a car, you can combine the falls with Spoleto or the Valnerina. At the lower viewpoint, two private parking lots open in high season and can be booked online; near the ticket offices, parking costs €10 a day, according to the park. Before you go, read our guide to driving in Italy.
How to fit the falls into an Umbria trip
The falls take about half a day. Therefore, they pair well with a night in Spoleto, which sits on the railway nearby. For the wider plan, our Umbria itinerary includes the falls in its seven-day version, and the Umbria travel guide covers the rest of the region.
What to skip at the Marmore Falls
- Skip a winter weekday if you want the full falls. In November and December 2026 there are no weekday releases, apart from the listed December dates.
- Skip Trail 1 with small children or a stroller. Choose Trail 5 or the easy Trails 2 and 3 instead.
- Skip light shoes and cotton layers. Expect spray and slippery steps near the falls, so wear shoes with grip and a waterproof layer.
- Skip arriving at the last minute. Get in place before the release starts, since each window lasts only one hour.
